The problem with hobbies is you trade off short term joy for long term gains. It's like a drug, and there are all kinds of behavioral things which release dopamine in you brain which is addictive and you build up a tolerance to. So start slow and keep your expectations low at the beginning or else you'll get discouraged and give up.

Notice what ideas pop up in your head that tell you to give up and refute them. A lot of times we say things to ourself we wouldn't dream of saying to anyone else, and a lot of times there are a few automatic thoughts that keep popping up over and over again. The same applies to depression.

When you become depressed you tend to stop what you're doing and just think about how bad everything is. But because depression fucks with your brain you think things are way worse than they really are. It's temporary, and if you think back to what ideas you thought about when you were depressed after it passed you may be surprised to realize how ludicrous the ideas were.

When you're in a Cognitive-Behavioral downward spiral, interrupt the process and distract or cheer yourself up
