Post of the week
hey /out/, i've been a lurker for a while but i managed to score a job opportunity.
to keep it vague enough to remain anon, i would be driving a bigass Sprinter van around on time-sensitive items, mostly auto parts or fabricated steel shit. from one state to another. my radius is a small, clustered group of about 10 states all within about a 12hr drive from the middle.
this operates somewhat like an uber, meaning i can work as much or as little as i want, if i wanted to spend the time i'd have the potential to reach ~$60k a year.
this means if i bring a part and drop it off in some backwoods place with lots of camping and hiking, i can easily be like 'yo, i'm out of service for a bit' and just go camp out wherever is close. or wait on dispatch for another shipment.
question is... what would you bring with you in a 6-day BoB? obviously i won't be camping every night, and i'll have immediate access to food and water. i mean, camping 1-3 nights in a random week period, at my convenience.
what would your bag include, assuming you're near metropolitan areas and can stock up on food and equipment the next or day after? i'll have my tent/bed roll/bag/backpack.
>hey /out/, i've been a lurker for a while
Not long enough if you don't know basic car camping gear

Hoy shit that picture is dumb as shit.
That house will get flooded in no time.
>>846916
No it won't. That's a painting. The water doesn't even flow.
I don't know if /out/ plays many games or not, but those of you who have.. what did you think of Firewatch?
Those of you who haven't (also to those of you that did as well) do you think firewatching is an interesting job, obviously not a career as it's a seasonal job. I've taken an interest in it and I want to give it a shot, for some "soul searching" kind of experience.
What do you think?
>>846666
Mother of checked
Also yea I play/ed Fallout New Vegas, LiS, and any number of walking simulators (dear Esther etc.) For some reason LiS actually felt the most /out/ist to me.
What would /out/ buy with a $100 amazon gift card?
Snow shovel and probe
700 condoms
A ham radio and an antenna for it

Looks like we're getting spared a hurricane this weekend so more fishing time! I really want to get out one day when the pressure is dropping super low from a storm and see what the bites are like. Could be fun, right?

Talk about fishin
>>846483
Depends. If they're in a feeding frenzy I use spoolteks, storms, bucktail jigs or any soft plastic. They seem to love the color white for some reason. When they're a bit more reserved I'll use a live croaker or pilchard.
You don't even have to go to the pier if you hate the crowd. Snook are cruising the shores all over florida right now. Just wade in the shore, bring your bass gear and start casting at dusk. Sometimes they even bite at odd hours in the night.
>>846490
forgot to mention, they like the color white during the day. Use something dark at dusk.
>>846491
I have some big Gambler shads that are dark black with some sparkles. Those would probably be good once it starts getting dark.
Maybe I will try and hit some bass a little later this afternoon and stop by the shore when it gets dark. Still not sure. Sucks it's still so warm during the day, I hate waiting around all day Saturday just waiting for the sun to go down a bit.
>write out drunkenly at like 2 in the morning to people if they want to go on a spontaneous weekend hike
>get two cute twins to join me
This is going to be a good weekend.
Do you ever just say "Fuck it", grab your BoB and go innawoods in the span of a couple of hours?
>>846372
Regularly. Also when I sperg and don't want to talk to people.
>>846372
>get two cute twins to join me
Who else misread that as: "get two cute twinks to join me" ?
I have to stop reading /r9k/
Answering your question OP, yes.
That's why I have a backpack with the basics on my car at all times.
But normally I don't do overnighters when it's a spur of the moment thing.
>>846372
>get two cute twins to join me
I'm guessing you're referring to mirror twins and they're named left and right.
So I have this mini lure I bought years ago from ebay. It's maybe between 3.5-5cm long. At the time I only ordered one, which I now regret, because they are no longer to be found on ebay and having used it the other day it turns out it's a trout magnet, I was getting more hits than on a mepps.
Does anyone know where I could still find more? I seem to remember it was posted from china so I assume there must be some other site that sells them.
Also lure general.
>>846170
I like that color scheme.
I don't know if you will find that exact lure, but it reminds me of some of the Bass Pro XPS baits or a Berkley line like the Frenzy lures.
I'm in the same situation with the 3 little guys in the middle of pic related. Bought them like 15yrs ago and have no idea who made them but they are incredible for panfish and I'm afraid to lose them.
>>846173
I came across something alot like those whilst searching for my lure. They don't seem to be branded, and it's from the UK ebay so shipping might be an issue for you

I searched for 'mini plug lure' and it turned up a few others that were also similar if that's any help to you.
I realised I should have called this thread Alluring Lures.
>>846178
Damn, those are one of the few that only have one hook. Something about the shape and lip of those lures just makes them have the greatest action.
I wanted to say for the lure in the OP, maybe try searching for that color scheme because it is rare. Something like "Chartruese-Orange Shad" or "Yellow-Orange Shad" followed by "Shallow Diving Crank" or whatever it is.
Berkley actually had a Frenzy lipless rattler that had a similar color. The one at like 2 o'clock in pic. I miss those Frenzy lures, they were a bit different than most stuff you see and a lot of them work really well.
Strange weather today. The devil is beating his wife.
>>846121
> The devil is beating his wife.
What part of the world coined this phrase, and why? I've never heard the term spoken, only read it in a book. In Kansas we just say "look it's raining while the sun is shining."
>>846140
I've never heard either of those saying in my entire life. We just say "it's raining"
>>846121
Meanwhile I'm just stuck here in South Florida with our predictably unpredictable weather.
>out fishin at lake
>starts raining
>hide out in car for 10min
>sunny again
>an hour later, heavy thunderstorm rolling through
>drive to new lake 2mi away
>sunny and dry
So I'm looking for a new military-style backback ranging between 60-90 litres.

Hikers in Virginia,
Should I be worried about venomous snakes? I'll be in the Charlotteville area. I'm going there for a couple days to visit a friend and I plan on climbing a mountain for a day. My hiking experiences are mostly NH and MA. Any other pointers? Or recommended day hikes.
>>845737
If you avoid playing next to water you should be fine. Water moccasins are the most problematic venomous snake in the area.
>>845739
Thanks for the tip. Are any of the snakes venomous enough that they will kill us if bitten? I'm also reading that I should wear pants and boots, how important is this as I have low cut hiking shoes. I'm struggling to find the info I need.
>>845737
>>845754
Native Virginian here. >>845739 is either not from Virginia and/or clearly has no clue about our venomous species. Cottonmouths exist in Virginia, but you're highly unlikely to encounter them in Charlottesville. Cottonmouths tend to be found in the eastern part of the state. There are northern water snakes up there which are commonly mistaken, but the triangle shaped head and "cat eyes" are the indicators for all of our venomous snakes.
The two species you need to be aware up there of are Copperheads and Timber Rattlers.
Copperheads are very docile and you're more likely to walk right past them and never notice. Rattlesnakes are similar, but they will let you know if they feel threatened. I've run past rattlers that were sunning themselves on a wide part of trail and they paid me no mind. Timber rattlers grow up to 6' can be anywhere from lime green to a forest green, but they always fade to black or nearly black at the tail- very easy to identify with the triangle shaped head and rattles. Copperheads are typically short and fat. A 3' copperhead can easily be two inches thick. They have a diamond pattern of alternating shades of brown and are all but invisible on dead leaves. A bite from an adult copperhead is not likely to kill you, but it will hurt - a lot. Baby copperheads on the other hand have no control over their venom and their bite is far more dangerous and can be deadly. Babies are identified by the triangle head, same pattern as the adult and a neon green/yellow tail. They use the tail to lure prey and the lack of venom control is to guarantee a kill with one strike (survival method).
The best thing to wear with shorts is a pair of gaiters, but it's not necessary. I've hiked about a hundred miles in crocs. Best thing to do if you encounter a venomous (or any) snake on the trail is to warn members of your group and leave it alone.
What is /out/ opinion of the ocean? Do you enjoy being on the beach, swimming in open water, or boating X miles off shore?
I for one am absolutely terrified of the ocean and all that it contains. While I won't cower in fear at the thought of it or turn down a trip to the beach, I respect the ocean and its creatures as much as I fear them, and just cannot willingly put myself into the water beyond waist deep, or get on a boat bound for deeper water. I have no problems in rivers or lakes, but the ocean is just . . . I don't know man.
>give me the address to the ocean, I'm 'bout to write it a letter
>you may be the ocean, but I'm hotter and wetter
may or may not have been to the atlantic, it would have been many years ago
>>845632
The beach is pretty shite because of how many people are usually crowding it, though beaches where it's colder are much more enjoyable because there's a lot fewer people, though the swimming ain't great. Private beaches are good too, but that kind of stuff is too rich for my blood.
Going /out/ on the sea is really fun though, I went a long time ago with a friend of my fathers, an old scientist who swore like a sailor, we visited tiny little "deserted islands" that were kind of just sandbanks with tangles of sea adapted trees growing on them. Fishing was fun, even though we never managed to catch anything. And the sky at night is beautiful because on the sea you can really get away from the terrible light pollution that goes on in the mainland.
I really ought to learn to sail myself and go out there again, but I'm too poorfag to afford a boat meant to be taken too far out to sea.
I love the beach but mostly just for the rocks. Rocks in the ocean are also interesting.
I am an amateur Australian hiker and was thinking about going to Yosemite for a few weeks. What are some things I need to consider? Weather, season, gear, dangerous animals etc?
>>845541
are you looking into day hiking, or rock climbing?
>may-june are best for waterfalls
>sep-oct are best for sunny but not too hot
>late june-end of august are too hot and crowded
>dec-feb are snowy, skiing and snowboarding at badger pass is fun.
>glacier point road and tioga road are shut down to the higher elevations from nov-may
>gear depends on what you're interested in doing
>bears are not dangerous as long as you don't try to feed them
>if you want to stay in the valley expect to have to book at least 2-3 months in advance for slower seasons, 4-6 months in advance for busy season, or take your chances getting in line at camp 4 at 4 in the morning

My straps are a little heavier then I'd like, but they'll work for this trip.
FYI, entrance to all national parks will be free today through monday, the 28th, in celebration of the anniversary.
Of course, that might mean there will be plenty of people there.
>>845353
I'll take "Worst days to go to a national Park" for 400, Alex! Thanks!
Delete this racist culturally appropriated arrowhead right now you bigot
I thought it was free to go to national parks year round
Hey /out/
I have a trail that stretches 400 km in my province and it goes through fields, forests, roads and some minor urban areas. I'm not going to walk all of it because my city is basically so the route that makes sense starts on my front porch and ends in a town an hours drive away from which I can catch the train back. The path I've plotted is 230 km.
A few questions:
- How much distance do you usually cover in a day? I understand it depends on terrain and how much you carry, but even though there are parts with roots and rocks, the trail is very flat. I'll carry water, food for a few days and a cheap (heavy) tent.
- Are freeze-dried trail meals worth it? Weigh much less but they're expensive and also require more water. What are some decent alternatives that are easy on the back as well as the bank account?
- I have an ethanol burner with all it's accessories. It's quite light but the fuel weighs a bit and all in all it's bulky as fuck. Should I bring it? Starting a fire is prohibited outside of fireplaces, of which there are quite a few along the way.
- What are some other smart things to bring along for longer trips that usually is not needed for day trips?
Pic is the burner and vessels
What's the name of the trail?
