Sup /out/.

>Be me
>Crush invites me to go backpacking for 2 weeks through Alberta's national parks. Everything planned. Just need the ticket and pay for half the travel expenses.
>Freaking stoked. Never been outside of my home country before
>Purchased my ticket, get my passport and doing cardio for an hour everyday to build up stamina for 3 weeks now.
>Crush starts getting weird
>Starts getting really weird. Says that she's worried we'll be spending to much time with each other. So much so that we might hate each other. Assure her that's stupid and this is gonna be amazing. She sees it my way and goes back to being normal
>I'm not a clingy person who needs constant attention or affection. She knows this so I'm confused on where she's getting this idea.
>She starts freaking again out of no where now saying that, we might not be friends after this and we should get different cars and go to different places to sleep(B&B's and shit). That way we're not with each other for 24/7
>Get dumbfounded by this whole thing. The more I think about it, the more disgusted and pissed off by it. So much so that I'm about to tell her its off and go fuck myself
>That would about cost another additional $700, (estimating and not including gas and food.)

>Asked close friends and family. 50% of them say, fuck her, cut the loses and continue with life. The other 50% say, fuck her, just go your own path (Not traveling with her at all). Find yourself and all that shit.

So my question for you /out/ is, anyone have any recommendations for stuff to do in Alberta Canada? I'm landing in Calgary if that helps.

Thanks in advance /out/

huskies are a great choice for anywhere that isnt desert. they will walk/run tirelessly and require very little maintenance. the drawback is that most of them MUST be on a leash/lunge line when camping or they will run off never to be seen again.

the best way to avoid that issue is to start them on offleash training as young as possible, but even still i'd keep him/her on a 30ft lead when you set up camp for the night

In Maine's North Woods, forests and rivers that used to feed paper mills will now be permanently protected as a national monument — thanks to a donation by the co-founder of Burt's Bees.

President Obama announced the creation of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument on Wednesday, just one day before the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

Can we talk waterproof shells?

My 3 year old marmot precip needs replacing, and I need a new shell. I'm happy to spend more money this time for something that is
>waterproof
>breathable
>durable
>packable

Will be used for rain and snow including climbing/snowmobiling/motorcycling over the top of necessary layers/protection etc.

What's good these days?
Goretex, event, polartec neoshell (pic related but $$$) or something else?

>>
I worked outdoors for 10 years. Employer supplied all "breathable waterproof" gear. Let me tell you, from all that experiance I will never wear it again. It doesn't work the way it should. You get the worst of both worlds. Soaked from rain/snow, and wet from sweat. So I just go for gear that does the ONE thing I ask of it 100%. Do I want to be dry? I use a fully waterproof layer.
>>
>>844192
Wise words. I also have experiences that suggest breathable and waterproof dont exist together. OP should get good waterproof shell with optionally good ventilation zips or something.

I might have a good job opportunity in Chicago, but one of the things making me hesitate is idk if Chicago is good for outdoors, especially camping/backpacking. Looking on a map there aren't any National Forests or Parks anywhere near there, which is usually where I go to get /out/. Also would it be cold and snowy a lot?

Wisconsin is pretty dope, but not much terrain. Illinois outside of Chicago is all soybeans and corn unless you go all the way south or the northwest side of the state. Lake Michigan is basically an ocean so pretty nice in the summer. A handful of forest preserves if you want to take a jog or ride your bicycle and some of them have mediocre fishing spots.

Deep dish pizza sucks. If it's not thin crust, it has to be pan pizza. Deep dish is for tourists.
>>
>>843918
And the cold and snowy part depends where you are coming from and where exactly you are living. There are a couple weeks every winter of real cold (like <20F) and normally only a handful of real snow storms but anything <12" and they can keep up with it.

The wind on those cold days will suck if you are in the loop or somewhere right on the lake with tall buildings. It funnels the wind between the buildings and is awful. But besides that it isn't excessively windy.

Just get a bicycle and hang out on the lakefront bike path for the few months out of the year that you want to go outside. It's a great city but I hate cold weather so I'm in Florida now. I will probably go back in a few years when my house here is underwater and winters in Chicago are in the 60s.

I might tell you stuff you allready know but here goes.
Think in layers as you build up your outdoor wardrobe,so you can add/romove peices of clothing to adjust for the climate you're going to be in.

*next to skin / base-layer: synthetic or wool.
This thin layer transports moisture away from your skin and often stays on you for the whole duration of your trip - at least in temperate or cold climates/seasons. Of course it also adds warmth. Synthetic is the cheapest, lightest, the fastest drying and the best at tranporting moisture away. Wool on the other hand makes for a more comfortable climate and does not get smelly and sticky like synthetics will. Merino wool does not itch but can be quite expensive. In general I would recommend synthetics for short or high-intensity use and wool for longer trips or stuff like cold winter when you rarely take your clothes off.

*mid-layer: synthetics or wool. Optional down or fiber for when not active.
These are just the "warm clothes" that you pack depending on the temperature. I would recommend fleece since its somewhat cheap, dires fast and is quite light. Wool is a bit heavier compared to the insulation you get, dries slower, but as mentioned gives nice climate. This is however not as important in your mid-layer, as it is not in contact with your skin anyways.
You will often find that you need to pack an extra piece of warm clothing for the cold evenings and mornings. Since this will stay packed in your backpack most of the time it is a good idea to use something like down or synthetic fiber jacket for this because they are very packable compared to the insulation you will get. Down must not get wet!
>>

*outer-layer: depends
The job of your outer-layer is to withstand wind, rain and be durable enough for what you are doing. There are several ways to aproach this:
1: packing (light) rain-clothes that you only wear in rain. The rest of the time you wear a comfortable wind restistant jacket as outer-layer (or just no jacket if the weather is mild, or if your mid-layer is wind-resistant)
2: Wearing water-proof, breathable shell-layer like gore-tex. These membrane-clothes are 99 % waterproof (don't believe their lies!) and allows for moisture-transport, so that you can keep them on without drowning in your own sweat. They will, however, never be as breathable as an outer-layer, that is not water-proof.

Your M65 jacket would fall into the category of softshell - a windproof and strong outer-layer. Wearing it would not make sence for pure hiking, because it is too heavy to be worth it in that situation. However it can be a great outdoor jacket for general use. Combine it with a simple and packable solution for rainy weather and you have a fine setup.

But before you buy that jacket take a look at the materials. A military issue jacket will most likely be made of 50/50 polyester & cotton (polycotton) which is ok - but aviod anything with more cotton than 50 %!
Also avoid thick jackets with many layers - it is better to layer with other clothes so you can udjust.
>>
>>842899
mine is 99%waterproof,(it's a clothed plastic bag)
super comfy though

Let's talk about bags, quilts, blankets etc.

What do you use? What do you want to use?

>>
I've been thinking about copping a S2S ember quilt or an EE one.

Depending on which temp range I go for either would be the most cost-effective.
>>
I use a closed cell foam pad and a mummy bag. I wouldn't be opposed to using a quilt for summer, but I don't have a need to invest as I have an ancient synthetic bag that still works well enough.

Cold weather bag is a Sierra Designs Zissou from before they switched to the worse fill.

Shitty coleman ""0 Degrees"" sleeping bag I've had for 20 years, and an old U-haul blanket to lay on top of. Keeps me warm in all but the coldest sub-zero nights.
If it's going to be above freezing, just an old GI wool blanket is all I need.

I like to be outside and want to do it more than I currently do.

today I was going to try to stay the night in a forest park just outside my city. I brought a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, some food and a pot to cook it in. I knew that this place had a shelter (pic is it) so I didn't bother with a tent.

So I start the fire, start cooking, eat my food and then just sit there and stare at the fire for three or so hours. It started getting dark at around 21:00 and I started to get scared. Looking into the fire destroyed my night vision so I couldnt see shit into the woods when I heard a weird sound or something.

So I figure that I might as well try to fall asleep, but I just couldnt relax at all. First, I wasn't even tired and three hours later when Im posting this Im not tired. Secondly, the thought of not having a door to close freaked me the fuck out. Literally anybody could just walk up to me when Im asleep. Third, I read way too much creepypasta to be alone with my imagination in the dark like that.

So I said fuck it and packed my shit, put out the fire and started making my way back through the pitch black woods. I regret this because that shit was ten times scarier. Saw eyes in the forest, some weird-ass cloudy white shape that seemed to be following me and some hood rats vandalizing a school once I got back to town.

So, my question is: how does someone quit being such a little pussy in the outdoors?

Anyone else here as much of a pussy as I am? Or anyone have been but gotten over it?

A lot of people I work with have these types of lights, if you're talking about the smaller one that looks like a pen

Really useful for inspecting welds in tight spaces
>>
>>840169
I think it's a little thicker than a pen, but I guess it's in the same ballpark. Seems great for what it is, a part of me wishes I bought the TK75 with an extender now that I looked it up. Seems ideal for outdoors use, the PD35 is probably the more sensible general purpose light though.

>>
>>838978
>where
Australia, the Northern Territory - Arnhemland, and Western Australia (the Kimberly region). Basically all over 'top end' Australia.
> Pay
Pretty bad to start with, basically took home 12K my first year, worked pretty damn hard too. Finished off (in bush flying) earning roughly 65-70K per year flying larger piston twins (Basically all 400 series Cessna's, Barons, Chieftains etc.)
> Did you like it?
I did, I was pretty young and I got to see and do some pretty cool shit. It was the Wild West out there some days. Basically I started off flying blackfellas to remote camps, delivering supplies, fishing charters to remote spots, all that kind of thing. I wanted to get into the airlines (good pay, job security etc) so I always saw a light at the end of the tunnel when I was having shit days.
>Future in bush flying?
It's hard to say. Most guys do the bush flying thing to build hours for the airlines, but most airlines now offer cadetships (direct entry, they train you and to some extent pay for your training) so it's dying off a little in that respect. The pay for bush flying in general is pretty ordinary, so young guys aren't really prepared to dump a shit tonne of money on flight training only to make meagre earnings in bush flying. There are some niche jobs like fire bombing which pay okay I hear.
The other problem I see is the age and condition of bush aircraft getting around. Most are beat to shit and ending the end of their frame life, and not many manufactures seem to be continuing and replacing models that are truly suited for bush bashing.

i live in an area that has no mountin' lions except every couple years one will be spotted in the suburbs prowling about, and it's pretty scary. if you have kids you can't fuck around with that.
