Weapons training and maintenance is a must. Before they can even shoot, have them be familiar with their rifle.

Perfect weapons don't exist, it's always comprises. Would this be a good fun to have hiking/innawoods? Sure, but if you see some fowl or some other game bird good luck hitting it, or leaving enough left to eat if you do hit it. IMO best innawoods gun is a 22mag/12ga combo gun. Even that has a lot of limitations compared to a bolt action rifle. It's all about balancing what you, yourself, need.

it's got particularly good accuracy when you're jumping around, also you'll run faster with it. Just don't forget to carry your knife as backup.

He thinks it's a combat rifle, and you won't see much combat. The scout rifle concept is designed to be an all purpose fighting rifle, in which sounds dumb because it's more of a SPR to tag along with a sidearm or PDW when supposedly it is the "only gun you need".

Loads rated for Springfield trapdoors have a little oomph to the recoil. Loads rated for what the Marlin can handle will borderline dislocate your shoulder. I can shoot trapdoor loads through my 1895 all day, 4-5 of my "bear loads" and I'm done.

A 405gr lead cast over 40gr over IMR will get it moving about 1200-1300fps out of the 1895's 18in barrel. Nice and gentle, but be aware that is 2gr of IMR3031 over max suggested for the Springfield Trapdoor rifle. My "bear load" is a 405gr hardcast /w gas check over 48gr of IMR 3031, gets me about 1700fps. That is 3gr shy of max for the 1895. If you can't tell I get the best velocity vs powder charge with IMR 3031. For example 48gr if IMR with a 405gr bullet gets me 1700fps, whereas 48gr of IMR4895 (my other go to powder) gets me 1550fps.

Any APC or IFV really. Russian armored vehicles are notorious deathtraps, whereas the worst of the American armored fleet are just overpriced and not by default sufficiently armored for a COIN role.
