Loads rated for Springfield trapdoors have a little oomph to the recoil. Loads rated for what the Marlin can handle will borderline dislocate your shoulder. I can shoot trapdoor loads through my 1895 all day, 4-5 of my "bear loads" and I'm done.

A 405gr lead cast over 40gr over IMR will get it moving about 1200-1300fps out of the 1895's 18in barrel. Nice and gentle, but be aware that is 2gr of IMR3031 over max suggested for the Springfield Trapdoor rifle. My "bear load" is a 405gr hardcast /w gas check over 48gr of IMR 3031, gets me about 1700fps. That is 3gr shy of max for the 1895. If you can't tell I get the best velocity vs powder charge with IMR 3031. For example 48gr if IMR with a 405gr bullet gets me 1700fps, whereas 48gr of IMR4895 (my other go to powder) gets me 1550fps.

Thanks, I think I'll try that load out.

Before you start loading, make sure you differentiate load data sets. There are sets of load data for 1873 Springfield Trapdoor, Marlin 1895, and the Ruger #1.

I load that same loading as your bear load in my "heavy hitters".

You ain't lying that stuff is not much fun to shoot after a full tube (over 3000 foot pounds of energy) it groups really well in my 1895 though it leads a good bit but that's because I don't use a gas check.

Shot a 220 pound hog with that load a couple years ago, it made a clean pass through both shoulders and it was like someone had walked up and kicked that pig over, very effective. Pic related is my 1895gs, with a custom big loop and xs sights.

For anything smokeless powder that Ikknow of yes. For black powder about all Iknow is 70 grains so wwould definitely look that up first.

While freedom group may initially screw it up I hope they put out something otherwise fudds have a captive market and will hoard and overchargefor that rifle worse than 22. That said while I am more for open or skinner sights your setup has the makings of a great coyote gun

It was a joke because phones auto rotate. It's a Winchester 94, 30-30. Made in 1927. Smooth action, fun to shoot. I shot it one handed terminator style once, that was an experience.

I was interested in the cowboy version. I picked this pair up because I'll more than likely use it innawoods. The reduced length would make it a half decent hiking/backpacking gun, instead of unbearable.
>>
>>34301925
I would go with a buttstock cuff over a sling holder. There're a number of custom leatherwork companies that make good products. Galco makes nice stuff for cheap.
>>
>>34303546
I was just memeing for the most part, I figure that is why most guys go with the guide gun length. Mine is going to be a range toy for the most part (I don't hunt big game) and a 9 shot Cowboy plinker sounds like a blast. Nice wheel gun. Is that a .44 or a .357?
>>
>>34303846
Ah, gotcha. It was hard to pass up the full length one. Maybe someday I'll get one.
The revolver is a Ruger security six in .357.

My LGS gets some awesome used shit. I found my stupidly uncommon hard-chromed Hi Power there, too. I just happen to be there right place/right time. 500. I couldn't have done it on purpose. And since I was already buying the Marlin, I had to walk out with both.

My dude, we have very similar tastes, you just get the opportunity to buy them!
Whereabouts (generally), if you don't mind my asking?

The shop is in Jamison, PA. Real friendly people, and very good prices. They have a Facebook page where they post their deals, and are often willing to ship.

I might stop in the next time I'm headed back home to Dixie since it ain't far off 95. Thanks anon, have fun with your shiny new guns!

My buddy at work is selling a Marlin 1894 in .41 magnum for $400 burgerbucks.. I have not seen the gun yet so I do not know what condition it is in. I will find out tomorrow.

I have always wanted a lever action. What is /k/'s opinion on a levergat in that caliber?
>>
>>34305431
it's fine, obv. somewhere in between 44 mag and 357. The cost of ammo is just kind of expensive so reload.
>>
>>34300802
That's tiny minority in straight circles, how fucking tiny do you think it is among fags, a minority group?

>>34301925
Maybe just to have spare ammo in that case, because reloading from a sling is actually unbelievably fucking awkward and I would never do it on foot or standing up.

They are not at all as great as they sound on paper and I seriously suggest you get a proper sling and a proper bandolier, separate.

>>34303596
Oh yeah, thanks for bringing that up, a cartridge saddle on the stock is a MUCH better way to keep spare ammo attached to your gun.

You could easily fit like 8rds of .45-70 on the opposite side of your stock, some rigs can even include a cheek riser, which can be appealing for some optic setups.

I've got a lot of rounds through my grandfather's 444 Marlin. I think the 444 is a good balance for a high caliber levergun. I'm really interested to reload for it. The 45-70's benefit is that it's able to shoot the heavier bullets that the 444 cannot but deer and elk don't need a 550 grain slug to go down. You get the heavy bullets at the expense of velocity, range, and trajectory. The 444 can throw 300g hardcast lead bullets at 2000-2100, thats plenty of power and flat enough to shoot 250 yds without having a rainbow trajectory.
>>
>>34305276
This is the only actual chew I can find around where I live, it's this or dip. And I don't even chew often, it's good enough.

Enjoy your overpriced ammunition that has slightly more power than a 30-06 while costing nearly twice as much.

http://www.hornady.com/store/45-70-government-325-gr-ftx-leverevolution/
>$43.44 for 20
>4110.84 joules at muzzle
>624.84 m/s (slow ass rainbow trajectory)

http://www.hornady.com/store/30-06-SPRG-180-gr-InterLock-American-Whitetail/
>$29.40 for 20
>3949.498 joules at muzzle
>822.96 m/s (fast straight trajectory)

>inb4 muh bear gun
>inb4 muh heavy round bullets muh stopping power

Heavy bullets don't necessarily equal significant kinetic energy gain. A common 308 or 30-06 will work just as well as 45-70 while having superior range and accuracy. Literally the only reason to get a 45-70 lever rifle is the coolness factor of shooting an open sight lever gun.
>>
>>34290562
have you ever shot one of those things? it's not a pleasant experience
>>
>>34310067
>implying OP is a manlet and cannot handle it
>implying it's really that harsh of recoil
>>
>>34310047
>paying more than a buck a round for absolutely anything when a cheap lee press will reload rounds that fire as well as any factory load
why?
>>
>>34310080
Most shooters aren't going to invest time and money into reloading. It's not as easy as you imply not to mention a lot of people just don't have the space to set up a safe reloading station. Improperly handling smokeless powder can spell BOOM.

Factory 45-70 ammunition is just really expensive.

I'd like to get into reloading, and 45-70 is probably one of the rounds I'd start with in BP, just because I want to feed my Trapdoor it's original loading and not mess with anything else since I'd only shoot it for fun.

Would a Trapdoor count for BP season? Or does it have to be a muzzle loader? Cause if not I'd totally hunt with it too
>>
What I want more than anything is a rifle that looks like the original Henry rifle (the most aesthetic rifle) that has a loading gate and is 44mag.

I'd pay a lot for that
>>
>>34310137
No idea. I live in BC Canada and our provincial hunting regulations are simply split into bow only and not bow only. There are certain regions (usually within city limits) where only shotgun hunting is allowed. Technically, bow hunting would be okay in shotgun areas too. There are minimum caliber rules to follow as well. For example, it is illegal to hunt deer using rimfire. A compound bow can be used for all game. Municipal bylaws (No Firearm Discharge and Noise Bylaw) must be followed on top of the provincial hunting regulations.

Muzzle loaders are both considered firearms and not firearms in Canada.
http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/powder-poudre-eng.htm
So like some muzzle loaders are exempt from the Firearms Act meaning that a PAL license isn't required to buy and keep a muzzle loader. However, there are no special black powder or muzzle loader seasons in BC meaning you're basically just handicapping yourself if you choose to use a muzzle loader over a breech loading smokeless powder long gun for hunting.

Make sure your trapdoor can handle smokeless loads. Shit has high pressure.
>>
>>34310047
some legit autism here
>>
>>34310181
Ah well one of these days I'll look into it here for actual hunting.
I don't intend to load smokeless. Figure I'll just run loads it was originally designed for. Obviously factory modern is a no go. Buffalo Arms has legit BP loads I've fired in it, and have another box of rounds. Shit is fuckin expensive though lol
>>
>>34310047
You are aware that energy alone is not the only determining factor of terminal performance right?
>>
>>34310047
Projectile weight is absolutely a factor you fucking nerdlinger.
