Who wins?
>>
US Marine. I imagine the typical Roman soldier to be a malnourished manlet.
>>
so the legionary still has his armor and gladius? uhhhhh....
>>
Marine. He'd just call an airstrike on him
>>
>>34290088
The Roman army was well fed and a professional fighting force.
>>
>>34290082
If they were physically equal and unarmed. The Roman would likely have the advantage because all of his training and experience was geared towards melee combat.

He would also probably be much tougher because of living in a much harsher time and putting up with the brutality of Roman leadership
>>
>>34290082
The real question is how long before they start fucking each other in the ass
>>
>>34290096
and marine still has plate carrier and Ka-Bar
>>
>>34290132
something tells me that the legionary with a longer weapon and armor and all the knowledge of sword combat would fair better than the marine with a knife and the bare minimum of close quarter combat
>>
>>34290082
Well the roman since he still has a sword and my money is the roman would do better with it then the marine with his knife. If its no weapons my money would be on the marine he probbaly is better in hand to hand I would assume. Still who knows these people live two thousand years apart. Maybe they just bond over killing brown people in the desert I dunno.
>>
>>34290082
Roman legionary because he would still have his sword and have more melee experience.

Legionary, you mong. Not fucking Auxiliaries.
>>34290082
>>34290132
>>34290096
Well, I'd think the Legionary would probably have some advantage. I'm not saying it would end with no casualties on the Roman side but US Marines certainly don't train to fight in groups. There's almost nothing in modern doctrine that would help the Marines if both groups had to fight as a whole all at once. I can only imagine that there are some tricks to it when you can fight as a bloc.

And so, are we looking for a 'victory' or a hard win (one side all dead)? This is one of the things I'd like to imagine I'd pull off if I had a time machine. Go back in time and do some anachronistic shit just to see what would happen. I'd certainly visit some composers with a sample of modern music of all kinds. Forget Hitler, I want to know what Chopin would think about Eletronika.

The arena isn't specified. Let's just assume the Roman Legionaries don't go full By Zeus!-crazy at the sight of these strange future-dwelling thunder-throwers and know at least superficially what the Marines got.

OP said nothing about missiles on the Legionaries side. He crossed the pilum in the image but said 'no spear' on the side. It's really a javelin, if we want to go into details. There are also war-darts (plumbata) that can be lobbed.
>>

If you were talking pure hand to hand combat I think it'd be the Marine, they do more unarmed combat training than you'd expect.
Plus even if it was only a few centuries ago human beings have come a long way in stature and muscularity so the Marine would definitely have superior strength
>>
>>34290361
Whoever said that?
Man is born with a weapon; The Sundering Fist!

Also, not a word said about the gladius, the combat knife, the grenades, the war-darts or the pugio.
>>
>>34290378
OP crossed out the Marine's sidearm and wrote 'gun', I'm pretty sure he's so dumb/liberal that he thinks Marines go into battle with 1911s held at the ready.

But whatever, a slapfight between two average members (read: retards) of the two most overrated meme combatant groups in history would at least be entertaining, I suppose.

You fucking dumbass. The height of the Roman Empire wasn't like the medieval times where everyone is a spooky skellington in armor. The Roman army was well fed, they were healthy, and they were well trained and very organized. The Romans were extremely advanced. Quit thinking medieval times.
>>34290082
Anyways that's a tough one, I would say a Roman soldier. Mainly because morals were not a thing back then and they were used to hand to hand combat a lot more than marines are. Nowadays fights usually take places 300 meters out or so. A roman soldier saw the whites of every enemies eyes, dat nigga be crazy.
>>

>Calling Romans overrated

Now marines, they're overrated.
>>
>Two reasonably fit men
>One armed with a sword that he trained with for years
>One armed with a knife that he uses mostly to open MREs
Gee, I wonder who'd win.
Bonus points for having a plate carrier and helmet though. Almost as well armored as the roman.
>>
>>34292573
You fucking dumbass. it's been proven that humans have gotten taller and stronger over the centuries, and though the legionaires may have been "well fed" thats compared to peasants who lived off of bread. we have hundreds of years of science and experience behind us.
>>
Frag out!!!!
>>
>>34290082
The Legionary has better armor for being hit in the head or anywhere for a full out brawl. Additionally the Legionary is going to be better suited for hand to hand combat, something a Marine has far less training in.

And as a total last ditch, the Legionary could rip off a section of his armor or use his helmet as a weapon to better effect than the Marine could swing his PASGT.

Modern armies, for good reason, do not train hand to hand combat. Any hand to hand combat you may have received was an excuse to get you all outside whilst someone searched your stuff for drugs and contraband.

The Roman Legionnaire has basically spent his entire life working incredibly hard and practicing close combat.
>>
>>34294312
Marine Infantry require you to be a green belt in MCMAP, unless you have some shitty ass unit. For pogs it's harder because they have dayjobs and need to do it on their own time. In the Infantry they will fit MCMAP into the training schedule.

Roman Legionairy, of course.

Modern Marines are women, POC and betafags. They couldn't do shit to a REAL MAN!
>>
>>34290082
Legionaire, if marginally. Both have nearly equivalent discipline and conditioning but the Roman's training was focused on close combat while the Marine's was focused on small unit tactics and ranged combat. Give them both slingshots and you'd see the reverse but as it stands the Roman Legionaire has a slight edge.

>>34290130
Not that long, but the Legionaire would need to initiated.

>stronger

literally the exact opposite has been proven
>>
>>34296995
Still lurking. I don't dispute this. All they did was hand to hand combat.

I was simply making anon aware modern military does indeed do some training on hand to hand combat.

As for OPs question, you really can't stereotype everyone like that. I was a lanky ass guy when I was in the Marines. I'd probably kick a lot of legionaries ass. But then some Chad Thundercock legionnaire could probably decimate me.
>>
>>34296999
Well...technically modern nutrition has provided better heath, strength, and height but it's so marginal compared to the well rounded Roman diet that it's not that much of an advantage.

It's like comparing two heavyweight boxers but one is constipated at the moment. It's just not that big of an issue.
>>
>>34293529
Marines getting fed burgers since childhood better than Romas eating lean deer?
>>
>>34297127
Actually, legionaires ate mostly grains with some meat and cheese on the side. A pound of beef per day was standard.

Not a bad diet but could use more fruits and veggies. A lack of a reliable source of carotin would hinder roman eyesight but not by all that much.
>>
>>34297086

anatomical studies of the long bones of roman farmers and soldiers indicated they are significantly stronger than average modern humans. the typical roman who did hard labor all day every day was about as strong as today's top strength athletes.
>>
>>34297069
Modern military hand to hand combat training is very practical with no frills take downs and strikes. However, there's a bias towards taking down an opponent quickly since it's assumed you want to get back to shooting as fast as possible. If you're first move doesn't work you don't have 4 or 5 layers of counter moves to call on. Normally you don't need to but this is a special case.

Then again, typical boot camp is something like 6-9 months depending on service (9 for marines, right?) so there's probably more to learn if anybody goes in for more training.
>>
>>34297069
>some jerkoff who trained once a month in combatives can take down a roman who is stronger than him and trains all day doing this

the roman guy will break your neck in about 2 seconds
>>
>>34297341

Nigger are you on a crack pipe? Army does 10 weeks, Marines 13. Training in your unit before deployment is usually 10 months.

not relevant at all. the romans definitely did not steal everything. specifically, roman military operations in almost all aspects was original, especially after the marian reforms.

then again one cannot expect a marine to be educated in anything.
>>
>>34297270
Source? Not disputing i wanna see this though
>>
>>34290129
What the fuck?

The Marine has muscle mass due to modern nutrition and PT regimen. Not to mention better hand-to-hand doctrine evolved over hundreds of years of refining.
