Yeah which kinda one of the reasons for his fall, granted I have no idea where his CO was because he should of started to pass things up to chain of command. His job as an Lt is to serve as the stepping stone between his platoon and command. Once Elias and Barnes obviously started taking over command with little to no success he should of stepped in to regain control of his platoon or started relaying to command that two sergeants within his platoon are getting a little jumpy.

I was in the Army with two different NCOs who reminded a lot of Barnes and Elias. We all wished Barnes like NCO would be hit by a mortar so we could go on without the absolute toxic leadership that was ruining our platoon and we wished the Elias like NCO became our platoon sergeant. I don't think any of the people who say Barnes was the better NCO have actually been overseas, it's most likely edgy kids who think killing civilians is the way to win a war against guerillas when that just makes more civilians into guerillas. Elias was the NCO to win the war and bring more of his troops home, Barnes was the NCO to needlessly kill the most.

This is the French version of this. Though less fratricidal and psychic.
The soldier holding the other one was basically born to kill. He fought on the Eastern Front since he is Alsatian, and the Germans saw them as Germans, so they conscripted them.
He lived through at least the battles of Kharkov and Cherkassy, and now he's fighting in Indochina. The soldier he's holding, and also the one slinging his M1 Carbine, is a rookie lieutenant, sent to command a platoon in a remote outpost. The lieutenant is more naive, and tries to keep his men (Vietnamese colonial troops) alive no matter what happens. The veteran is more pragmatic and realistic. One example in the film is an argument about leaving the wounded behind.
However, they both come to respect each other in the end.

At the end of the film, the lieutenant is fatally wounded, and the veteran manages to escape the entire platoon's annihilation, along with a couple of Viets. It is then stated that he was killed in action in Algeria, several years later.
