My gun slide doesn't always go all the way forward when I rack it and sometimes I have to push it back forward. Will this resolve itself after break in? I haven't shot it yet, it only happens when it's chambering a round not when empty

I'm moving out of a college dorm pretty soon. I'm 20, and not old enough for conceal carry in my state (hint: "stand your ground"), but as I understand it I can still own a firearm for self defense. I have experience with firearms from growing up, and am fairly comfortable with them.
The apartment I am moving into isn't in a terrible area, but the security seems a little lax. Since I'm going to be on my own, I'm just looking for some peace of mind.
Should I invest in a handgun or shotgun? Or would I be better off just getting a baseball bat or something?

Seriously, though. The Lebanese army is somewhat unique in terms of its geopolitical position as well as its relationship with Hezbollah. Anyone have much info on how effective they are as a fighting force? They've probably been getting some essential experience due to the Syrian War spillover.

From my recent trip there, it seems there's a big recruitment drive, and indeed a lot of people are joining the army. Hopefully that's accompanied by an increase in training and an improvement of equipment. I don't know how much they can do that if the politicians there keep lining their pockets as they usually do.
