is it wrong to focus all on seriously getting better at art? I want to draw silly or childish things like sonic or Scott pilgrim but I'm supposed to improve my drawing skill through efficient practice. I keep.puttimg off my practice because I am more worried about my imperfect end result compared to Pros, and as a result worry more than enjoy myself.
should I just draw what's on my mind once in a while? my little brother doesn't even practice much but he has fun and still gets decent art for a 14 year old done. I have so much kiddy stuff on my mind I wanna draw but I'm so afraid of what people will think if a 19 year old drawing this. Should I run wild and have fun?

Draw whatever you want and once you're done with a piece, figure out what looks off about it and keep it in mind for when you practice

Rinse and repeat and you'll be able to have fun and improve at the same time
>>
>>3101905
If you want to have fun, draw crazy shit for fun, but if you want to get better, grind them fundies. Simple, mate.

How do bad artists get so many followers and likes on Instagram? I'm a bad artist with only 60 followers and my most liked drawing only got 45 likes. I see other bad artists with loads more. How do they do it?

You're probably a different kind of bad. There's technically bad art with appeal and then there's technically bad art with nothing else.

better than nothing fampai. work with it til it tones itself down. always be aware of what composition your internalized perspective comes to suggest and ask yourself if its what you need right now. and then correct accordingly.

ever rifle needs to miss the first couple shots to be zeroed on the target.

How can you internalize perspective without knowing how to not make it exaggerated?

I think OP means he can finally turn an object from being flat to looking three-dimensional, but in the process, he sucks at checking his proportions so it's better in a way but at the same time it's got another issue to it.

second, i think you are insisting on too much of his torso being exposed. you could hide a lot of it behind the knee that comes forward

How do you get over perfectionism and fear of failure when it comes to art? It's seriously impeded me these last few years and I can't stand it. I can't get over it ethier.

My art is still mediocre and I want to change but I can't.

What I do, if you play multiplayer games, claim to everyone no matter what that you will win. Yes you'll get comments that you're being toxic or w/e but it dispels failure in my mind. Even if I lose I get a good laugh out of it.

And it translates to drawing similar for me but because drawing is a long haul it's harder to think in that way. So I substitute it by talking shit to anons here that I don't like that one day I'll be better than everyone. It works. I might have a child mentality though.
>>
>>3107710
That's using /ic/ as a scapegoat to funnel your negative emotions into though. It's not really addressing the problem.

I don't have the luxury of such time.
>>
>>3107712

It's just another tool. You can do that like half the people do on here subconsciously anyway or you can watch a cheesy youtube video about "make many drawings and one day you'll be a star :-)" for the 10th time. Your pick.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

I've seen countless artists who are good(for example drawing anime girls) but they do it again and again and again and after a while it becomes repetitive and boring. Personally, Ill take the skill set of someone who is good at many things like varying faces, backgrounds, animals, different body types over someone who's a one trick pony. In fact, I'd argue that variety is just as important as fundamentals, thoughts?

While your outlook is in the right place, there are just those that stick with the same shit over not wanting to step outside the comfort zone or haven't put much practice into other areas, yet they can excel in the spesific they do.
Not every ones process is the same either, nor desire.

If you're asking that variation is as important as fundamentals, isn't fundamentals in itself variation?

hey i really like to paint outdoors, but I'm too nervous to carry around an easel. I feel like I'll be calling attention to myself. trouble is, if I have no easel then I have trouble finding anywhere I can chill and paint.

are any of you plein air painters, and do you ever have to deal with people walking up to you?

Just go out and do it. The first few times will be awkward and you will hate any time people talk to you, but you will get used to it and any future conversations will be okay. You can also put on headphones which is kind of a universal "do not bother me" sign.
>>
>>3103703
>are any of you plein air painters, and do you ever have to deal with people walking up to you?
yes and no. the idea that you have to be outside to finish the painting is mostly myth, and the practice should've died with the impressionists.

The best thing to do if you want to work plein air is to do drawings, as detailed and with as many notes on color as you want, and finish the painting in a studio or wherever you paint indoors.

Everything you can learn from plein air paintings you can learn from painting indoor with still lifes. Then take that knowledge and apply it to drawings you've done outdoors. Light is light.

I see all these "plein air artists" who literally go outside for an hour, block in a landscape on a tiny canvas on their little portable easel, and instagram their way to victory. That is NOT good practice. You will learn more by drawing than painting anyways, and painting outdoors is so distracting and difficult that honestly it's not worth it.

You only have to be outside painting and have your easel blow over, or your painting smack into the dirt, or it to start raining, to realize that your romantic idea of "being in nature" isn't actually suited to making good paintings.

>Bierstadt executed this painting in his studio, three years after going there

Yeah I get people who walk up to me whether I'm drawing or painting outdoors. Mostly older couples, some teenage girls, Asians, weird Australian aboriginals that chat my head off, and rich grande dames who want to make their connoisseurship known, but thankfully children tend to leave me alone. You shouldn't be so antisocial... just carry a taser in your pocket!

Get some canvas clips and a portfolio bag. I use 18x24" canvases. A foldable easel can go over top of it. Keep paint tubes in a backpack.

How many of you have actually read all of Loomis' books? Have you completed at least one of them?

personally I finished all of "fun with a pencil", was sort of a waste of time because I was already familiar with the construction part it teaches, and the rest was just copying his cartoony style that I wasn't interested in. didn't learn much.

i also finished about half of "figure drawing for all it's worth". amazing book, taught me a good portion of what I know about the figure and anatomy. Looking forward to at some point finishing it. the rest of the books I have barely touched.
