Appropriate, seeing how they were first published in the Heavy Metal magazine. The artist is Jean Claude Gal. He's very underrated, there is not even an wikipedia page in English about him, only in French.

I wish I had this kind of patience, holy shit

Which raises the question: did these artists composite one large picture out of many smaller ones that they had previously worked out in isolation?
Some of the other ones I can understand but the cathedral one has so much detail, and so many light shapes intersecting and cutting through shadow shapes, that I doubt it was done on the fly.
What's the process here?

Assuming these are all from large scale, published comics they have dedicated teams of people, so I'm sure all the detail in the cathedral was a conglomerate effort with a handful of people over a few days time.
Or one absolutely insane guy who loves architecture and while this looks like madness to us it's probably just a bit of a challenge to him.
I don't know how the top tier comic book artists do it.
They're crazy good at perspective, they've good an extremely good grasp of the figure, know how to draw a vast array of things, know how to draw these things from any angle and make it all relate to each other with proper perspective and on top of that mostly work from imagination. Shit's crazy.

imo the impressive part is how much work they get done in a short amount of time. And the dedication of doing what basically amounts to drawing the same damn thing in the exact same style over and over for years on end. I'd go mad from the monotony of it all.
Having all that knowledge is not that exceptional if you're an artist who has worked for any significant amount of time. But damn is it hard work to make comics, you just don't have an appreciation for the work involved if you've never tried it yourself.
