So how exactly am I supposed to get bigger? This industry is based on pure luck it seems
>>

put a picasso quote, i get like 5 times the views by mentioning picasso, don't know why

You are not trying to get into the industry by posting work on deviantart, that's ridiculous.
>>
>>3103248
Obviously but if no one sees my work, then it doesn't matter what I do
>>
>>3103251
Ever heard of marketing?
>>
>>3103240
add your art to as many groups as possible.

it works for me.
>>
The key to DA are social interaction. Especially groups are helpful, but also participating in events and contests can generate you new viewers. You will probably not gain a lot of viewers, even with a Daily Deviation. The key is to built up a fanbase and expand it by giving them what they want.
Popular topics will also give you more views than original content. That said, DA is pretty dead and not the right platform for becoming a public figure/ internet famous.
>>
>>3103256
>>3103240
Yeah go make a twitter + tumblr + instagram. Spread yourself out.

is there any truth to the 'DA can sell your artwork on without your knowledge or consent' rumours?

Reminder that twitter, tumblr and instagram aren't places filled with artists like DeviantArt, so you may drag in non-artists who don't know how to support you.
>>
>>3103240

post work you fucking faggot; you don't get to decide what's good and what isn't.

"no".
>>

You're not gonna make it if your only audience is other artists.

how do you gain an audience on twitter if you aren't already popular? I understand tumblr and instagram, but I don't think hashtags are as effective on twitter.

If da is dead whats the next art site?
>>
>>3103263
Cross-over fan art is such shit, I'd instantly despise anyone wearing that in public
>>
>>3104347
the idea of X-site or X-community pretty much died when you introduced social media to the world

picture this

Art Community for people who are interested in art and artists who want to share their work and get exposure.
sounds decent right?

vs

Internet platform where all the normies go to make comment-sized blogposts who can follow their favorite artists
and their friends who may or may not be that into art get to see cool shit and maybe follow.

guess which one brings in the dough.
>>
>>3104365
Neither because dough doesn't work like that. Social media is a tool just like anything else.
>>
>>3103315
Kind of like tumblr I'd guess

do art trades, follow ppl who follow you back, do provocative shit that might make a splash in the pond
>>
>>3104368
if you have reach and a desirable product you will be able to build a brand and that brand will rake in dough

>Social media is a tool just like anything else.
Correct, Social Media is a tool to extend your reach

You need to put yourself out there by making things that have mass appeal.

When I was 12, I made very shitty sonic fanart and got decent views. Maybe try drawing a few fanart things, then branch out to better things once you get a following.
>>
>>3104365
Not true. Sites like Artstation and Deviantart are still very valuable to get a loyal fanbase that is actually willing to commission you or support you on Patreon etc. Social media has a better reach, but the followers you get there are much harder to monetize.

I know it's not rigged, I am saying OP is being stupid for thinking it's just luck. Maybe he gets no views because he sucks. How should we know he didn't post work.

Also it's just stupid how he posts something and after a few hours he gets discouraged and posts on 4chan.

I don't know why you're even defending OP, unless you're OP, in which I don't care what you say because your thread sucks.

Stupid thread just post your art maybe it's just shit and that's why you don't get views.Just posting your art isn't everything be more active, use multible sites like deviantart, twitter, tumblr, make new friends with other artists...
>>
I can't post my art because I don't want any attention to my person from shitters of 4chan. I've been drawing for years and I know what is considered good and what is not, make of it what you want, I don't care.

The only issue here is that I made a decent portrait of someone and it has literally less than 10 views for quite some time. So my point is: generally stuff stops getting views very quickly and you can't do anything about it. I won't market myself because I am a hobbyist and I don't have a thing unique to me, I am just a decent artist.

As I see it now, I have to do fanarts of game of reddit or other shit so I can get fans, but this is just cheap and I don't want to do that shit. I thought being an artist is more than this.
>>
>>3103240
Use as many tags as possible.
>>
>>3105398
Post some sketches then
>>
>>3105398
Nobody gives a fuck about a random portrait unless it has some innate quality that's interesting to people. What's surprising about this?

Make it interesting to people either by getting better or drawing already interesting things (for example, characters from a popular franchise)
>>
>>3105404
I just don't understand why it stops getting views so quickly. I would understand your point if I had more views and still no likes but I literally get no views. ArtStation is the same thing.
>>
A lot of success is based on luck; being in the right moment at the right time with the right skills.
>>
Do fanart of games/cartoons/anime/etc. that females like. Be detailed with the tags. Join groups.
>>
>>3103240
>make a (pretty good) post on 4chan
>literally no (You)s at all
So how exactly am I supposed to get validation? This site is based on pure luck it seems...for real tho. I never get any replies, it feels like I'm just talking to myself on here.

Jokes aside tho, try posting to other places. For example, some people will put their work on tumblr or deviantart but then they'll share that link around on other sites. Like I dig hunterxhunter and Berserk so I'll occasionally go on the subreddit and there's always fanart on there with a decent amount of upboats. That's a fairly easy way to get people to look at your stuff.
>>
>>3105406
It stops getting views fast because it eventually gets lost in the mounds of other new uploads. If you want your art to be in view for a longer period, you're gonna have to get more activity in your art and get featured in other areas, like "What's hot" or "Undiscovered". Appeal is what's important to get your art popular. You can get appeal by doing fan art, having a unique but not retarded art style, etc.
>>
>>3105406
>I just don't understand why it stops getting views so quickly
as the other guy said, there are hundreds if not thousands of uploads an hour on DA, and most of it is objectively trash. How long do you spend browsing new deviations ? I'm guessing, not much, well it's the same for everyone else. People just look at what's hot / undiscovered or, more specifically, most popular. Sometimes they search specific art and that's where the subject (fanart, furries, fetishes) can help you. The other way of doing it is to socialize so that people can get you the small boost in views you need to appear in the categories I mentioned above.
>>
>>3105701
Keep going babe
>>
>>3106491
How do you get into "undiscovered"?
>>
Unironically, but even if OP art is good, no one will notice him on deviantart. Deviantart is cirlejerk hole with same "top" artists on main page for years. The only way to be noticed on deviant is spreading your shit through thousand groups like a some 14 years attention whore. Twitter is hardmode too. Thousand Japanese/Chinese/Western artists who draw very good get little retweets/likes even for fanart. You will become popular in twitter only if other popular artist retweet you. I experienced this myself. Snowball effect is so ridiculous. Your shittiest drawing can give 1000+ retweets and 500 followers in one day
>>
>>3106491
What's hot is the dumbest fucking category on DA. I really don't understand why they keep giving the biggest attention to sometimes year old work. Like right now, there's a photo from 2014, one from 2016, an illustration from 2011 and some character designs from 2015 on what's hot.

I know it's my fault for posting on deviantart, but man, I'm just a /beg/ who wants to show people everyone can make it ;_;
>>
>>3106616
maybe you should trying aiming for a small group of people DA is quite large. that way you raise your chances of at least being seen. Also if you don't like the social groups on DA that wont help you much either.
>>
>>3103267
Instagram works quite fine for me. If you post and follow the right hashtags you can be followed mostly by artists. It's a popular place to spread your art in a more casual way.
>>
>>3106627
The fact that you have to use browser addons or work-arounds to post on instagram always makes me feel like I shouldn't be posting there at all. I can see it being a nice way for traditional artists to share drawings with their phone, but if your work is mostly digital, it's kinda weird.
>>
>>3106637
Eh I don't know what you're talking about. I draw mostly digital, make a crop, put it on my phone and post it. There are some hack browser addons for massive likes distribution, but you really don't need any of that shit.

One simple cool aspect of it is that since you're cropping stuff to fit in a square, you usually focus on the most interesting part of your drawings. Sometimes it ends up looking better than the whole piece, it's kinda funny actually.
>>
>>3103240
literary talk to people. be nice to everyone. leave a link in your posts. that's networking 101.

I'm not that familiar with how groups work, how do you do this? From what I've seen, most groups don't allow submissions from non-members. So is the answer to join tons of groups just to submit your art? Isn't that really obnoxious? Or are you suggesting I suggest my art as favorites, in the hopes that the group owner will admit it to the main gallery instead? Somehow it feels wrong to feign interest in a group if I just want my work in it.

>>3103261
Twitter is kind of horrible for gaining attention. Maybe if you really put a lot of effort into seeking out and interacting with others who may be interested in your work. But its format is strongly biased toward people who already have a following, it isn't good for discovering new content.
>>
>>3103267

even non-artists may happen to know an artist, and if not, they may happen to know somebody who needs an artist with you style

if you're consistently in front of as many eyes as possible, you never know what may fall down the grapevine

>Make original content on DA.

I think the artist behind that pic sold their rights to CN and CN sold the rights to Hot Topic, but dA cannot sell your artwork without your knowledge or consent.
>>

>the "industry" is getting popular on social media
>"getting bigger" is based off pure luck
Pretty sure half of the people in the credits of an animated show don't even use social media at all. The industry is about being good and capable at art. No studio will give a shit if you have 30,000 followers on Twitter or some shit. They care about the art.
Popularity with art isn't based off pure luck. It's based off doing fanart and lewd pieces so teenagers can look at your almost-porn and love it.
>>
>>3109110
Before killing my social media accounts I used to follow a bunch of artists I liked and I was surprised at how many of them had only a few thousand followers, sometimes even less than 1k. Same with a bunch of people I followed on Tumblr who'd only get a dozen notes on their posts, or whose blog got one post a year. If you distance yourself from social media a little bit and you look at it with a critical eye you really get to see it's not necessarily a mirror of your skill, for the most part it's just an exercise done to keep in touch with an audience and build up a little bit of ego - that's necessary too.

That said I have NO idea how to gauge my possibilities in the real world because all you ever get to see is social media. The only meter you have of what's appealing is social media... I don't want to think about it because I might start deluding myself all over again by telling myself that having zero social media following doesn't matter.
>>
Make tutorials on youtube and shill your art at the same time. Make lewd shit fot perverts and shill your other art at the same time. Literally PM people with your art and ask their opinions, start by giving your opinion on their shitty art etc. Wish you luck
>>
>>3109153
The biggest thing I was told by somebody already in the industry
>Skill with art > Popularity
Having the focus on being better at art has a larger effect on your skill than trying to impress/keep up with an audience.
>>
>>3109196
I understand but sometimes there's no other meter... I've been trying to ask pro artists about my art and apart from it feeling cunty on my part because I'm asking favors to strangers, I mostly got replies like "your art is good, you're in a good spot, just keep going!" which seems to me like the standard polite reply to this kind of contact. Maybe I'm completely paranoid but I feel like my art is garbage and yet I could never get any specific kind of advice.
