TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

This ones a 15min napkin drawing with a ballpoint pen. (It was actually computer paper not napkin) I'm trying to get in the habit of making things right in the first try to speed up work flow. You are. Don't try gestures before you can at least approximately feel the general proportions. Right now try copying what you see as precisely as you can, outlines are okay.

Ask yourself first what you want to create and then build your studies around it. What exactly are you inspired from? What does your short and long term goals look like?

Often responses here aren't very helpful. Don't count on them. You better develop your critical eye and improve yourself first.

I will try and help you, since many here aren't really pointing you in the same direction.
Take this as you want.
Drawing in its most basic way is literally sculpting in 2d Space.
Think about it,
What are you trying to do when drawing something, you are trying to make something feel real on a 2d surface.
Same as sculpting in real life, just that when you add Clay its going to automatically add Form. In Drawing this is harder since it doesnt do it for you, you have to do it for yourself. Your biggest problem in your drawing isnt the Anatomy, or the damn way the elbow tucks in ( not that those wouldnt be) but they wont improve if you just try and fix them.
its the fact that your Construction is utter shit.
You see all those circles, boxes you made?
They all dont have Form, and Form IS and I repeat IS the most ESSENTIAL part in drawing.
You know Vilppu?, the thing he says all the time about feeling the Form? Thats not a meme, its actually really important you to know
He isnt spouting bullshit, he's spouting actuall real important knowledge.
1.Gesture ( Defines they way the basic forms connect with eachother and what way they go, Up, Down, etc..)
2. Basic Circular Forms , Circles Zylinder, just trying to make the forms connect.
3. Add more complext Forms like Boxes etc.
4. refine, add etc..
5. shading over the already established Form.

Now what you will do.
Go to CgPeers and torrent FigureDrawing 1 by Vilppu,do all the courses and do exactly what hes going to tell you. If you dont have the account right now watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kiKq62b9Fw&t=3610s
After that youre going to torrent all Dynamic Sketching Videos and Book.
After you have practices Form a shit tone, doing it step by step as Vilppu is telling you it.
You will be able to go and study from Hampton and Bridgeman,
Not copying the drawing, but as hes going to tell you to copy them as before said with the same order.
Do this and you will already be better than 95% of /ic/

Here's your (you). Fuck off.
>>
Hey /beg/, which do you prefer when doing repetition

A timer by doing as much as you can within the limit? Or a set parts practice for the day, say 15 X/day? For me I feel like if I don't do enough of X for the day I am not satisfied regardless of time.
>>
>>3107985

A little mix of both, I usually do 1/2 to 1 hour of warmup doodling of the last thing I learned, then I have 3-4 hours of learning. If in those 3-4 hours I feel I didn't achieve what I wanted, I feel like shit.
>>
>>3107985
If I'm learning something I'll do it for as long as it takes me to do a page full, if I want to be faster I time myself.
>>
do you guys keep your drawing studies for figure and gesture drawing. like do you bother keeping the psd files or computer paper or whatever? it seems so tedious keeping track of all of it but at the same time i feel i should be keeping it because i can
>>
>>3107994

I like keeping a few to see the improvement from it later on, but anything I'd be proud of while practicing I know I'll do better in the future, so there's no point to saving it. I have stacks of practice printer paper with anatomy studies that I need to recycle.

Oh, hey. My drawing is in the OP, I don't know how to feel about it.

Anyways, 4th day of eyes, moving onto the nose later today.

Drawing random eyes in different poses from imagination, no values, trying to really nail the construction.

Any critique helps, please tell me what I'm doing wrong and what I could do to improve them. My goal is to be able to construct the eyes at any angle from imagination.
>>
>>3107805
the upper arm is a visible cylinder so that is an improvement.
take for instance the fingers. they do not describe a form and neither are they described by a form. they are outlines and make up shapes. When i teach people how to draw i make them draw actual cylinders in perspective and forget about fingers all together.
>>3107726
just draw a straight line down the center of the body and you will see that the lower body is off center and skewed. the limbs are second when trying to establish perspective so try to get down the large masses. as for practice, I would continue drawing human bodies in perspective for practicing complex forms in perspective, but do not forget to brush up on basics and check simple things like alignment.
>>3107797
now i know why the other anon said this was bait. we are in a beginner thread, and assuming you are beginning in art, there is no reason why you should stray from fundamentals to reach something "higher". unless you hold no value in how others perceive your art (which isnt true since you are posting it online for advice or exposure), keep doing what youre doing.
>>3107831
keep drawing and practice forms. i realize the paper may be smaller than it appears, but you are drawing a bunch of lines that have no structure. draw the beams as cylinders and the planes of surfaces like the bench as prisms.
>>3108009
flow and gesture shouldnt be as big as a focus as those arms and legs. CYLINDERS. keep going but dont worry about doing more faster. worry about doing all of them correctly whether it takes you a week a picture.
>>3108098
draw forms not lines. there should be ledges and forms that peak off of the face. dont be afraid to draw over things or overlap. break free from your symbol drawing you can do it
>>
>>3108103

Eye guy here. I lightly erase the forms I used for construction after I draw over them, so I guess it looks like I skipped that step. In any case, do you think it still looks like symbol drawing? Dang, I'll try to work on them more before moving on, then.
>>
>>3108108
Now do it without erasing so we see how you do your construction
>>
>>3108009
First of all, you're not drawing gestures. Secondly, study perspective. Then, if you're doing what you're doing, at least copy correctly. But this anon is right >>3108015, either actually study anatomy, or do gestures.
>>
>>3108108
yes. I have drawn those same eyes many many times and i know just from memory that the curves of the eyeball and brow are much different. the brow is a good place to try to understand your error because they should be very pronounced and angled away from the rest of the face. the replacement of the silhouette which should describe the forms with a line that shows direction is an oversimplification. you can erase your forms, but their presence, and location in space should all easily be visible through other elements of the drawing such as overlapping and size difference. so try to draw from more extreme angles too.
i remember when i was starting to draw i would have angles where half of the eye would not be visible but i would still try to fit it in. now i cut the fucker off without hesitation and i think you need to really look at the model/picture and draw exactly what is there. good luck
>>
Are there any resources on how to construct eyes well? I have so much trouble with them.

Here's how I go about them, using the Proko method from his videos. First I draw the brow line and the eye socket changing the planes depending on the face tilt. Then I wrap eyelids around the shape,

>>3108130

I see. I'm trying to draw them from imagination without a reference, but I guess I'm not there yet so I should use references for now? If it's not much of a bother, could you do a quick redline of my mistakes to see if I understand what you meant correctly? If not, it's ok too. I'll keep practicing

Welcome to hell, you're amongst friends here.

sorry but i draw almost all-exclusively in traditional and dont have access to a tablet right now, but yes you should always try to use a reference until you have a very good understanding of creating space and abiding by its rules and perspective.
these examples are much better with thickness, but look at this example of an eye that i got just from searching up proko. it is in a very similar pose to your drawing in the upper right but has obvious improvements in its confidence and depth as a result of the thickness of the forms that make it easily readable, constistancy in perspective which does the same, better line quality which describes the surface of the forms, and value. the value you dont have to worry about until you are comfortable (and i wouldnt worry about it until you are very very very comfortable) but hopefully you can see where you can improve. lastly, try to draw each eye about the size of your palm. I draw torsos on paper larger than the span of my hand and many people draw way too small. it will help you with understanding ledges especially.
>>
>>3108176

Hey, I appreciate it. I'll stick to references and construction and less on trying to making it look pretty without knowing how to draw pretty just yet. Thanks, bruv.

It's been a week roughly since I started drawing, been reading the keys to drawing and drawing my left hand in various positions and focusing on that rather than the paper itself. It's been tough changing how I've always drawn, but I do feel like it's making a difference. Am I at a point where I should start drawing more from life? I think my lines still lack confidence, so I need to practice that more, or is that less important at this stage?
>>

Your lines indeed need confidence. Do lesson 1 of Drawabox or Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching. Whichever you prefer but Drawabox is more beginner friendly.

Alright, tried with reference and tried to shade it too.

Happier with the results than the other I did (it's the OP image) but there's still measuring mistakes. The eyes are more open than they should be, and she's looking the other way. Left iris is bigger. Eyes are too far apart.

Anything I myself have missed? I'm always more concerned about the problems I fail to notice about my own work.

Has anyone watched Hampton's second video?
After doing a week of gesture drawing, I just finished watching the second video and it was kinda overwhelming with all the skeletal terminology and whatnot.
What would be the best way to practice what he taught in that lesson?

take more time with your drawing, measure, erase, draw again, measure, erase..

I feel entire bodies might be a bit too complicated for your skill level.. I mean, you are gonna improve your observation skills anyway, if you really wanna keep drawing bodies, but learn basic proportions and were things generally are.. learn basic 3D shapes.. draw simpler things but try to make those simple things look good and detailed.. draw body parts one by one (just an arm, just an eye, etc) and the body construction do it separately, with mannequins or w/e

I feel kinda directionless / intimidated when it comes to drawing. I feel like I have nearly no patience once it comes to drawing. On the other hand, I'm able to do 3d zbrush studies and spend a lot of time on one thing no problem (although still kind of rushed), but when it comes to paper I can't spend more than 20 minutes on fucking anything. Pic related is the last thing i was able to do patiently, already a year ago or so. I just feel like an idiot when I draw sometimes, like I'm too uptight or something? How do I remedy this?

Ignore her regardless, lmao. The average FZD student (one of the best and most hardcore concept design schools in the world) is aged 25 when they join.
What you need to do, is dive balls deep into Perspective (Do Vandruff Art of Science and Scott Robertson how to draw book, in that order).

You're probably doodling around think moving your arm alone will get you good, and that's not true. You need to understand how real life optics work to some extend, kid.
If you post some work, I'll be able to better judge.

Dude, nobody cares what you post as long as you don't spam the thread, if you've only got a piece of trash to show off then post it, worst case you'll get someone telling you to fuck off. Whether it's worth it or not depends entirely on the people reading the thread that day, sometimes you get good advice on a literal turd, other times you don't get any input no matter what you post

It's mainly because I realize I've fucked up and realize what I did wrong. But it makes me wonder if going through to completion will make you learn more.
>>
>>3108842
Not really, the point of critique is so people can help you know what's wrong with it so you can fix it.

The obvious course of action would be to fix what you think it's wrong, if it still looks bad after that then go ahead and ask. Don't be like retards that post all-bad drawings and ask for redlines.
>>

Yeah, I guess I'm just getting frustrated as we all do when you can't get something right.

I never knew how difficult painting faces is. Environments just seems so much easier at times.

Honestly I'm still failing and having a hell of a time.

I think it's because all this time I've been dodging learning. Even though I'm mediocre at landscapes my composition and perspective have always been weak.

Now I'm doing portraits I'm forced to learn from square one. It's a blast.

Requesting a good complementary resource to Loomis' head construction. Mainly the nose, it's giving me a lot of trouble placing the nose in different angles.

I know I'll get someone telling me to just draw a lot of noses but if I'm doing the baseline wrong, then I'm not really going to achieve anything by doing it wrong multiple times. Proko is usually really good but his face construction videos are so sped up and his "you should be able to do this already" approach bums me out.
>>
Ok you fags keep telling me to read Loomis so what order should I be reading his boos? Is FWAP entry level? I think I saw someone say figure drawing goes first but it references FWAP so what the fuck. Halp.

1. stop seeing the features as features
2. increase brush size and lay it down
3. decrease brush size as you go into specifics

the good news: i think your values are accurate. you are just not using digital in the most efficient way
>>

>>
>>3109112
Nope, that's fine. I don't paint people very often and despite doing some head studies and drawings I tend to have difficultes with the eyes. I'm probably still seeing them as symbols instead of eyes with overlapping eyelids.

I really should do some eye studies. Thanks for the advice anon.
>>
>>3109112
Actually I also get what you mean. Since I didn't layer the paint down I got caught up in replicating it as a symbol without learning anything.

Guys I have a question, more so related to content rather than technique... tho i appreciate input about the drawing too.

Is it ok to use photos of your friends as your model for nudes, even tho the photos your friend sent are not nude??

bit more context:
I have a friend and she's super cute. She sends me selfies sometimes of her outfits, like, wearing the t-shit of her favorite band, jeans, and cool accessories. I can't help but notice the shape of her body and she's totally a cutie... so I'm using one of the selfies as reference to draw her naked. i was mostly interested in practicing the belly part. but i feel really weird about making a nude drawing of her without her permission. but i love her body and it seemed perfect. i gave it an anime-ish face but the hair style style resembles her... i can't show the whole drawing, but here's the most important part i think.

//even tho i'm using a photo i'm still struggling with drawing the hands. will work on that later.

Then you're ethier lying or using a crappy brush with pen pressure enabled.
>>
>>3109201
You can only go up from there. It's your eye getting better at picking up detail and imperfections.

>>3109203
Previously I did only traditional drawing so I just picked some random brush and started drawing.
I didn't know you should disable the pressure.
>>
>>3109211
Yeah, pen pressure means you change the opacity based on the pressure you put down. Better off removing it an manually changing it for a clean image.

The overall form was good so just redo it with a solid brush to get the values down.

i do not own my own tablet, friend. so i cannot redline, but i can try to describe what i see.
i just dont see any form or flow... the bottom of the bag being loose makes sense if you are imitating skin, but there is really no form showing through anywhere. even loose items have ledges, peaks, and more minor forms within them on top of being recognizable forms themselves. did you even try to draw prisms that show the bag's direction in perspective? it is not visible.
the idea is enough for a giggle though

No.

I tried to disregard and blur the line between square and something like a bean bag.

Since I wanted to give the cense of flesh and that. Most of those bags are actually from references so is not like there is no perspective I didn't apply.

But as long as someone can read it well and gets the punchline/boner across then I'm fine with it.
