The left side at least looks interesting, 2016 is about as generic '10s cartoon as you can get
>>2768574
would you rather be shit or generic?

>The left side at least looks interesting
It's not interesting at all! It's just fucking disgusting
I've got a goal for 2017, and I'll be posting daily. My pictures will be easily identifiable by the "20:00" scribbled on them...
I haven't drawn anything in years... I was never a spectacular artist (as in I never drew fucking anything worth taking a second look at), but I've decided to get off of my lazy ass and accomplish a goal.
Criticism and critique is welcome.
Here's my endgame for 2017: I want to be able to sit down in any place with any tools and draw something from memory/imagination alone in 20 minutes or less. I'm talking about line art with a touch of shading, with the proportion and perspective I was aiming for. I'm not after perfect photorealism... 85% of the way will suffice.
My objective in the 20-minute limit is to be able to lay out the bulk of the drawing (the 85% rule again) I'm not including complete shading in the time limit. If I want to take a 20minute sketch and spend a few hours shading it in, then whatever, that's my prerogative.
My biggest problem has always been long, confident lines. I default to that god-fucking-awful chicken scratch.
I'm not looking to cross the uncanny valley with faces. A touch beyond cartoon/anime faces, with sufficient detail to convey emotion will do.
So, here's my plan. 1 hour per day, 3 x 20-minute sessions. Same reference for all 3 drawings.
1st drawing: Trace details, continue drawing until time limit reached. Plain boring practice building muscle memory. No thinking, just doing.
2nd drawing: Draw the picture freehand from the same reference. See if I can copy what I see without losing perspective, losing scaling and proportion, and without straying into symbol drawing.
3rd drawing: Clear the desk and do it from memory. True test of progress. Can I hold an image in my mind and translate it onto a two-dimensional surface? ...
It's basic learning: Rote, Application, Understanding. 1, 2, 3.
I'm going to do it daily.
As I improve, I'm going to start to drop steps 1 and 2.
>>2812714
>trace
It belongs in the trash
I'd like to drop Step 1 by July, and drop step 2 by December.
I intentionally chose a dark, low-resolution image for the first attempt because it would be very difficult to trace beyond very basic outlines.

Don't forget construction
Do you HAVE to draw nudity, or study nude models to learn anatomy better?
What do you think anatomy is?
>>2811808
yes, a lot as well. If normies knew how much it took artists would be shunned
>>2811810
Can't I just draw models in swimsuits or something like that?
Is it ok to feel good about sketches, traces, and unfinished pieces of art that look good somewhat? I'm trapped on this, please help.
Whenever I get a good feeling about a piece, I stop working on it. Do you guys have the same problem, and how do you deal with it?.
>tl;dr, how to finish pieces no matter what.
>traces
no
>>2812150
>good feeling about op piece.
Figuratively not gonna make it.
Ever.
>>2812151
what if I only trace the construction forms? such as circles, boxes, etc. Then proceed to copy the rest of the features on a different space? Is this a good training?
How do we fix it, /ic/?
>>2812588
git gud.
what's wrong with it
you don't
Guys, what do I need to paint something like this? I know I have to practice every day, but where do I begin?
I feel like my paintings are way distant from these ones.
I choose this illustration because I think League of Legends splash arts are my goal.
Not because of the game, but these arts are the kind of drawings who pleases me the most and basically is the style I want my future illustrations to be.
>>2812351
Start small, and build up.
For instance, try studying the mouth. Learn how to paint something as small as the mouth in that style until you're bored of it, and want to paint more than the mouth. The rest comes naturally. And if you're really intimidated by that much, just work on painting eyes in that style for now.
As for finding the tutorial or how to paint splash art, i can't help, but google would
Having goals is great, but it will take you many years until you reach that level. For now, don't worry about the subject. Read the sticky, start practicing, form a habit of everyday practice and if you have any questions go to beginner thread.
>>2812356
Thanks, I'll try.
>>2812361
Hmm, you're right. It's just... when I see some artists progression over the time, it excites me.
Some can became really good illustrators within just one year.
I know I shouldn't expect to sharp my skills like that, as everyone has its own time for learning things, but sometimes I don't remember this, and expect to learn as fast as them.
Any good books out there thats a collection of well detailed sketches of anything but humans? Sort of like a perspective book, but one geared toward post-loomis difficulty and focuses on construction? I own over 10 figure drawing books, and it feels like im reading the same thing over and over again.
No fucking animals though
Scott Robertson "How to Draw"
The book is about nothing but construction drawing for environments, vehicles, machinery, you name it.
>>2812565
thanks. But I sort of already read it years ago to learn perspective, maybe i could re-read again so i can appreciate it more.
>>2812342
>Sort of like a perspective book, but one geared toward post-loomis difficulty and focuses on construction?
google or look at Kim Jung Gi's sketchbooks
>But I sort of already read it years ago to learn perspective
art mastery isn't some elysium where you can read a book, absorb it all, and never need to open it again.
instead of looking for new books to collect, go back to what you have and try to apply the knowledge to a personal project
>company is hosting internship contest for concept artists
>only applies to university graduates and students
>t.high school graduate
>ask about it anyway
>"lul just post your art through our job interview page :^) or send it directly to me"
Should I ask about them for a list of portfolios they accepted to see where I stand?
>>2812121
nigger just ask
>>2812121
show them your pissed pants
>>2812123
>"sorry desu senpai that will give an unfair advantage"
o-okay
How do I even begin learning when the sticky is so overwhelming with information
>>2811169
pick up pencil start drawing
Despite what everyone says, the first thing you need to learn is to learn to love drawing.
Once you get comfortable with the idea and finding inspiration, then you can learn
>>2811173
I already love drawing, I spend hours every day doodling my autistic paracosm. I hate seeing how shitty my art is in comparison to what it could be, but when I'm drawing to learn I'm not drawing what I love. I'm looking through drawing on the right side of your brain and the whole book looks like a nightmare to me

>keys to drawing by dodson
>copying what is there and tool use
>perspective
>shapes in perspective

While you're doing this, read whatever interests you and fuck around with different things for fun. Look at a lot of art and see how it applies what you're learning. Copy it and try to apply it differently. After you get tired of ostensibly aimless fucking around that has greatly increased your knowledge, you can dive into specifics and drain a book you recognize as good for what it has to offer. Any specific book says more about the person recommending it than what it has to offer. I like videos for various reasons.
Draw rocks and trees. They're full of ideas.

Keys to Drawing is better.
first time here from /fa/, can anyone tell me who does these/similar
>>2810648
>>2810649
No one like kikkujo
What's the fastest way of gittind gud while also developing a style? I've been studying for a little over a year now, and all I can draw are grotesque, semi-realistic humanoids when all I wanted to draw were cute anime girls. You guys told me that I needed to learn anatomy first, and I did, but I still can't draw anime.
So what's the best approach? studying anime anatomy exclusively? pic related; Harada never studied anatomy.
>>2807706
>You guys told me that I needed to learn anatomy first, and I did
No, you didn't if you can't put two and two together and experiment to to find the solution to the moe problem.
>>2807716
this. OP i believe you smarter than a total fucking retard.
>>2807706
>fastest
ngmi
Loomis construction method is really unreliable, like going by thirds it doesn't even make sense, pic rel. I don't know, so far I cant learn to draw heads because this shit is not even correct.
>>2801793
Hey OP, it's almost as if people look different. What a epiphany!
Those proportions are a CANON. An ideal.
*attractive* faces tend to go in that direction. Ugly fuckers tend to be more assymetrical and have weird proportions - which is exactly what makes them ugly in the first place.
So keep that in mind - proportional rules are chiefly used to draw ATTRACTIVE people.
>>2801793
>being this dumb
>to make good art you have to be smart
sorry fammalino, you're not gonna make it.
>>2801800
but that is a generic skull. It's ideal.
Sorry for the shit tier quality of the pictures but this is some of the stuff I drew. I need ideas for a art competition, it has to be 100% original and I don't have any inspiration, I want it to be some darker/ creepy ink work. Thanks for the feedback
>>2812222
Use charcoal
needs more loomis
>>2812224
I agree with this guy. Charcoal will give your images better contrast, as well as make them slightly creepier. Charcoal does come in pencil form as well, so you can still have fine lines.
be as brutal as you can

fuck you!
Is there a photoshop filter or something similar that allows me to draw something and then have it pixelated in a consistent manner?
I'm a programmer trying to make some quick and easy 8-bit art for my games. Thanks for any replies!
>>2811999
Waist of trips, go find the pixel thread and learn how to do that.
>>2811999
No, that would require advanced A.I. You as a programmer should know that of all people.
You can however downsample art by resizing and converting it to indexed color and specify the amount of color swatches in photoshop. Pixel placement won't be tight, but it can give a okay ish result if the source material is clean.
>>2812003
Here OP I whipped up an example for you.
