Is it ok to feel good about sketches, traces, and unfinished pieces of art that look good somewhat? I'm trapped on this, please help.
Whenever I get a good feeling about a piece, I stop working on it. Do you guys have the same problem, and how do you deal with it?.
>tl;dr, how to finish pieces no matter what.
>traces
no

>good feeling about op piece.
Figuratively not gonna make it.
Ever.

what if I only trace the construction forms? such as circles, boxes, etc. Then proceed to copy the rest of the features on a different space? Is this a good training?

You should treat every sketch like bargue drawing, very precise. Then you will learn

>symbol drawing as fuck
>>2812150
you deal with it by experimenting to learn new things because you're using and have room for error

Look at it and think "what makes this good?" or "what do I like about this?" and then work on another piece.
>feeling good
Just STOP IMMEDIATELY when it looks good. If you do any more you'll ruin it. It's one of the hardest things about drawing and painting.

Heard the exact opposite from one of my art profs.
"Work until you think it's finished. Then work on it for another 15 minutes. Ruined it? Good, work on it for longer."

I mean there is really no point in polishing a turd, at that point your just going to frustrate yourself

I like to think every fuck up I make on a piece teaches me something. I also deal with an immense phobia of ruining my better sketches and have an entire file of them that I've scanned into my computer and use with my tracing board, pic related.
Also a fantastic tool to use in dealing with this exact issue

Well yeah, forsure it helps when you can realize your mistakes and understand what went wrong and how to make it right. The worst thing you can do is mindlessly continue on a piece with no understanding of what your fuckin up
>>2812459
Agreed. Just need to understand why you fucked up
>>2812150
Finish it. It's gonna be the shittiest thing in the world until you make a better one. Keep finishing, trying new methods/mediums. Surely you can never fail if you don't finish a piece; you will find however, you will never succeed, either.

he's memeing you. the old masters traced their studies.

It's ok anon, if you're happy, that will keep you motivated. But it's not okay to just stop there.
I recommend finding a source of motivation for your finished work like an artist you admire. try to reach their level. Don't think about the work, just focus on the final result

this

Finally a good answer, this is OP and I thank you a lot. I think I'm lacking motivation, that must be it.

Perhaps once in a blue moon, don't crutch on it. Tracing should not be standard procedure for anything.
