FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?
>The original developer of the site has taken a leave for quite a while, originally due to medical reasons. Progress on the site is almost non-existant at this point. You can try contacting him at @LavaFlake or emailing him at [email protected].
What do we draw?
>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.
What's a low effort warning?
>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.
>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.
What happens if I'm eliminated?
>Your streak will go back to 0 and you will have to start again. No other penalties.
How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?
>There is no week system anymore, instead new users are given "streaks" based on the number of consecutive days you can submit without getting eliminated. (token losses do not reset your streak)
Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?
>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

im an art critic now
so if i can have stuff to review that would be tight
I want to use Photoshop(c6) to draw since thats what all the cool artists do but my lines are laggy. Is this something that usually happens on psc6 and how do I fix it????
You need a good CPU to be honest
I have the same problem with Clip Studio Paint now that I've downloaded a couple brushes. I use Sai to sketch and then I save it into a PSD file after I save it on Sai. Then I open it in Clip Studio for rendering because Clip Studio can open Photoshop files. You could do the same except with Photoshop
>>2816366
Try increasing the spacing of your brushes, sometimes a few % can make a huge difference.
Also, if I recall correctly, you can improve brush lag if you go into preferences > performance and either uncheck the "use graphics processor" option or go into "advanced" right underneath it ans switch drawing mode to basic.
>be 22

>do I just use my mouse a poorly paint something?
do I buy a drawing tablet and hope for the best? I'd rather do it myself so everything has a personal vibe to it
sorry for the shit thread
Just pay somebody dude, you're not going to be happy with anything you make for years and if you are happy with it you're probably going to be a dunning-kruger laughingstock
>>2815602
or you can set the dpi on your mouse really low and draw like that.
>>2815602
This is only somewhat related in an aesthetic psychology kind of way, but it's probably best to take >>2815613's advice here. If this is the first album you're making, people will be judging you as a complete package. It's best to look clean and approachable when nobody knows anything about you.
Like, imagine if the first Beatles album had the White Album cover. If it had succeeded it would've done so on quirk factor alone, and even that's unlikely. You need time to get an audience before you're able to just throw out bullshit without turning people off.
Also having another person collaborate with you makes you look less like a dA autist and lends legitimacy within itself.
I've seen the Erik Olson course mentioned numerous times as a foolproof way to increase perspective skills for newbies. Has anyone done this whole course?
I think it's a series of 16 total courses from New Master's Academy but they're on cgpeers(last I checked) and they cover tons of perspective exercises. I remember one anon in a recent thread was grinding through and only a few months into the process but said he saw major improvements.
bamp
I got to end of chapter 3 and saw no need to continue because
1. I'm only interested in character/character design
2. I know I'll never use 80% of what's he lectures
3. I can just use sketchup...in fact as I was going through his course I attempted each lecture in sketchup and finished faster by throwing a draw filter after
4. I take a college class on it instead it'll be more practical application
but the first 3 sections were eye opening and he is the best at explaining the concepts I just am not going to exhaust my autism on it
>>2815202
I have, it's worth doing most of it. It's boring as hell but if you want to learn perspective it's the best thing I've found out there.
How big is your canvas when you start drawing and when you finish you work?
Do you work with a large canvas for sketching and/or rendering like e.g. 7000 x 7000 pixels wide and reduce to roughly 3000 x 3000 when finished?
I did look up thebold and new /ic/ stickies, old conceptart.org questions and Youtube videos regarding the topic are were not specific on workable resolutions as some of this information is outdated as nobody works with less than 3000 x 3000 pixel canvas anymore.
Bump, this is important
>>2811869
Around 7500x5000 at 150dpi
If you're going to print, you should use higher dpi (300 and above) and not measure the resolution in pixels, but in inches/centimeters.
Between 2500-6000px depending on the type of work and reduce to around 1500-2500px
It's better to start small for sketching and possibly upscale if you're going to render for a long time
I love drawings I love art but I'm terrible at drawing and I want to do some type of art but how do you make a living doing art??

>>2816066
look at the sticky ya dingdong
Let's have a thread to discuss how important is to use reference.
I have the guess is extremelly vital and that is even more important than your skills.
All the old masters seemed to use heavily reference in their paintings, even loomis seems to imply it.
Even for animation most good artists use two or three diferent references, they even use a 3D reference besides a video reference or mocap data.
I think it has to do with the fact my brain is a monkey one, and my brain is too retarded to think of all those little details reference can give you.
>>2815998
During the making of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves:
>To ensure the animation was as realistic as possible, Disney sent his animators on courses at the Chouinard Art Institute; he brought animals into the studio and hired actors so that the animators could study realistic movement.
"I definitely feel that we cannot do the fantastic things, based on the real, unless we first know the real. This point should be brought out very clearly to all new men, and even the older men."
- Walt Disney
>>2816033
Disney did the same when producing bambi. He brought a deer and animators were studying its movement and anatomy. In both cases, this isn't an example of using references, but rather doing studies.
>>2816038
It's the same thing. Using reference doesn't mean setting up the exact image you want to draw and copying it one for one, unless you're doing a still life, which IS a study. Referencing means both studying and understanding the subject you're about to draw and then having material on hand to help add detail or double check anatomy or other aspects of the subject.
I used to be so dead set against reference and it's probably the stupidest thing I ever had in my head. Lately I've been using reference more and more and my drawings have been much more solid as a result. Reference always helps, always.
Can you see the 3d-ish shape i'm trying to >imply?
How do I do that but less shitty?
Can you recognize what it is?
looks like anal beads. poorly drawn anal beads
>>2815332
Corkscrews, but they aren't very representative, it took some thinking. Making silhouette art is fine, but if you're going to do this style where you purposefully leave out details you really have to nail what you do include as accurately as possible to make it all fit together and be recognizable.

It's true op. Remember
"Talent is a perused interest...."-Bob Ross.
I have an Art project on my mind and i want to theme it around "Out of Place". I want to make 3 pages about the project. 1 on The art genre and 2 on artists, can you help me with ideas about the first page. (pic not related)
Everything you see in galleries tries so hard to be "out of place"
making things unordinary is everywhere
It would be truly unordinary to make something ordinary
Just went to an art museum. I actually had a really good time. But..... How is this art? I could do this
This too
>>2813884
art has long since ceased to be a measure of technical skill
an idealist believes that modern art is anything that effectively communicates emotion or meaning
a nihilist sees that modern art mostly revolves around who you know, and what image you have
some people on this board have fantastic technical skills, but what does that matter if you're just a neckbeard who draws detailed profiles of warhammer 40k characters
>>2813884
but you didn't do it.

How do I get these halftone settings on clipstudio?
I know all of fakku's artists use basically the same setting
>darken a spot on a white area so you can put in a highlight
lol retard japs
>>2813163
Darkening an area around the wanted highlight instead of just picking out the highlight is one of the best ways to indicate a highlight. I'm not defending this particular use of it, but don't pass off viable methods via your complex.
>>2813303
not the guy, but then her face should have that darkened tone as well
How do I get good at values ?
You don't.
>>2812262
You can't, people are born into that skill.
It's a Gosh given talent. You either have it or you don't.
