How do I even begin learning when the sticky is so overwhelming with information

pick up pencil start drawing

Despite what everyone says, the first thing you need to learn is to learn to love drawing.
Once you get comfortable with the idea and finding inspiration, then you can learn
>>
>>2811173
I already love drawing, I spend hours every day doodling my autistic paracosm. I hate seeing how shitty my art is in comparison to what it could be, but when I'm drawing to learn I'm not drawing what I love. I'm looking through drawing on the right side of your brain and the whole book looks like a nightmare to me
>>
>>2811169
>keys to drawing by dodson
>copying what is there and tool use
>perspective
>shapes in perspective
>value

While you're doing this, read whatever interests you and fuck around with different things for fun. Look at a lot of art and see how it applies what you're learning. Copy it and try to apply it differently. After you get tired of ostensibly aimless fucking around that has greatly increased your knowledge, you can dive into specifics and drain a book you recognize as good for what it has to offer. Any specific book says more about the person recommending it than what it has to offer. I like videos for various reasons.

Draw rocks and trees. They're full of ideas.

Keys to Drawing is better.

Try drawabox for a more "specific" approach

how to draw as a second book, kek.
>>
>>2811183
is this actually a good route for learning

>Draw rocks and trees. They're full of ideas.
this. holy fuck.

Flowers are another good one if you want to ever get into painting.
>>

Couldn't agree more, op.

Cancelled my schoolism membership, sold my tablet, and threw away all of my sketchbooks.

Such a waste of time. And for what? It's completely unnecessary and serves no purpose.
Art is not needed, especially in today's society where the intellect, personality, and face reigns supreme.

To be honest, the "artistic lifestyle" seems almost like a childish endeavour at this point, and I don't mean any disrespect, but it seems like the most serious artists (asides from guys who are legit conceptartists/illustrators/porn artists but they represent a very low % of dedicated lifters) are also the people with nothing else going on in their lives.
I know this was true with me, I was biggest and most serious about drawing when I was still in uni, working only 15 hours a week, and pretty much just plucking around all the time, going out, with no real life.
To all you kids out there who are getting sucked into the comerical art , try to stop yourself.
So long as you have and maintain decent facial aesthetics, you'll be fine.
Art just not worth it.

Cheetos.

>but they represent a very low % of dedicated lifters
what did he mean by this?
>>
>>2811237
Fuck no, How to Draw is way too advanced and perspective made easy is useless before you know the basics of observation drawing.

If you start with Keys to Drawing and Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, and then work your way through these books the maybe it'll be a good route.
>>
>>2811183
So what are the two perspective each missing, since you can't just do one of them?
>>
>>2811169
>read the sticky
>make a list of the things it asks you to do
>do the things
It's not hard.

Not being autistic helps

>Couldn't agree more, op.

God, that fuckin' first line always cracks me up.
>>
Depends. If you are an autist 'I've never touched a pencil in my whole life' then Right Side is where you start because it's geared twords complete utter beginners.

If you've been drawing for a while and always wanted to do real life but can't copy then do Keys.

Right Side in my eyes works better for complete beginners Because it builds confidence in a complete beginner. So do that first. They both cover the same shit.

After that do Loomis 'fun with a pencil', then 'perspective made easy'. Then after that go wherever the sticky tells you to go.

GOGOGO OP.
>>
>>2811362
The first one takes it easy and shows you how to align figures to the ground plane and repeat shapes into perspective. The second one goes full autismo and shows you how to be a human CAD program with xray vision.
>>
>>2811183
Is this to mislead newfags and reduce competition?
In that case, this is the best way to learn drawing. I learned like this and became a professional concept artist in 1 year.
If you follow this advice you will definitely make it.
>>
First of all love drawing and develop your passion for it. Second, learn basic forms and drill them constantly. Not going to lie, OP, if you can draw a box, sphere and cylinder well while thinking in 3D, you can learn to draw anything. You can't learn form without perspective though so here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQOFp1X7VDI

If you need to get comfy with your tools, look up Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching. Train to draw so much that making strokes is second nature.

Once you advance, Steve Huston is great to learn from, also Proko.

Good luck, OP, if you really love art, you'll do it no matter what. Don't get discouraged, we all start at zero. There is no talent, only hard work and the best are the best because they are obsessed and they don't quit. Don't ever stop talking with other artists, your true friends are those that share the same aspirations as you. And draw a lot. Most of all, draw a lot... With goals... Never stop having goals. Goals are actually the most important thing so you have direction.

These are the things that helped me the most, art is such a worthy pursuit, OP, hnnnnnggggg

Tl;dr: have goals and practice a lot, start with basic forms

scrub detected
The only thing you need is Riven Phoenix's instruction videos.
I got a permanent position at Blizzard's Mexico division 8 and a half months after starting.
>>
>>2811237

God no! Especially not at that pace where fuck all will be retained.

How to Draw isn't a beginners book unless you have a hard on for a more technical approach.

Do Keys and Betty's book- do both- then let interest guide where you go next.
>>
>>2811183
What happened to just start with loomis?
>>
you don't need any books to get good at drawing. don't listen to these fools op.
>>
>>2811241
Stop forcing memes you faggot
>>
>>2811169
learn to draw 3d forms on a 2d plane
>>
Don't read the sticky at all. It's a wild goose chase.

99.9% of the people here are bad at drawing. The resources in the sticky were essentially a ton of beginner artists searching far and wide for a million books on improving at art with conflicting opinions and slamming them all together in one list. Considering how most people on /ic/ can't draw very well or struggle with all their might to make an inch of progress that should be a red flag that the sticky isn't good.

You would be wise to leave this community and find a much more supportive art community. The negativity on /ic/ is very detrimental to improvement. Let's say you're confident you can learn something about art in 2 weeks. And after 1 week you're halfway there. Then an anon posts and says "This takes months to learn for an average person"

You hear comments like that all the time and it will take months for you to learn how to do it too. That's how dangerous the negative hopeless comments here are.

If you're serious about getting better then reach out to extremely good artists on social media and get help from them. Join more positive art communities than /ic/
>>
>>2812165
I love /ic/ with all of my heart. But this is kinda true.

Use this place to get your fundamentals. Then move on to ConceptArt. They will tell you why you're arts shit but do it in a far more civilized way.

Is drawing from your shoulder a meme /ic/?

If not, how should I be doing it?
>>
>>2811169
It depends, I recommend you start with perspective drawing. Learning the basics of 1, 2 and 3 point perspective will allow you to go into construction drawing.

You ever seen those detailed drawings environments, vehicles, and animals? that's all based on perspective drawing kicked up to 11.

Move on to learning the basics of lighting. You will need to build each subsequent skill off the previous one.

Before you even THINK of learning, say, anatomy, you have to understand perspective and form. This is just a start.
>>
Go to actual art sites for advice and only come here for keks.
>>
>>2812477
Drawing from the shoulder is definitely not a meme. It just takes time to get used to.

Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk
Then do the exercises until you're not absolutely terrible at them anymore. After that, simply keep using your shoulder for drawing.
