Would an E5-2670 with a GTX1070 make for a good gaming PC build? Or should I just go for one of them i-series processors like all the cool kids?

I've had a similar build with a 2670 and a r9 fury. It worked well but I then switched to a 3930k since a lot of games that I played (Gmod, dark souls and others) didn't like the slow single threaded performance of it. Maybe shoot for a 3930k or 4930k. The 2670 probably would be fine if you can't go for anything else

The "distribution/package" method of distributing software is stupid and relies on the goodwill and/or motivation for maintainers to finally update shit. I bet there's a lot of corruption involved and only packages that pay bribes get updated faster. There are lots of requests for new packages for Debian that have been closed with a "I'm not interested in it" comment from a single developer.

Also, the libraries shit. It supposedly is good because all applications can share the same libraries and save disk space, but if a certain application requires a certain old version of the library or the x86 version of it, you are fucked in the anus.

Windows, on the other hand, just works. If you want to install some software, you just download it and install it, and it's granted to work.

Third party repos remedy this problem.

If you need specific libraries that are outdated, the developer can just package the libraries with the program and make the program load only those libraries, Steam on Linux does this (Although it falls back to system libraries if the "local" ones are missing).

I decided to ask /g/ since there's people here who know alot of alternatives to software like this. I was wondering if anyone could suggest an alternative to microsoft word but that has a good and possibly similar UI to it.

This dumb laptop only gave me a trial and word has always been the easiest thing to use since it's staple. I tried Libre office but I don't like it's interface and how it makes all of my previously word files all clustered. Is there a better alternative?

>>
>>55764576
Not really.
>>
LibreOffice is the best alternative. The fact that your word files are messed up is the fault of Microsoft, for using a proprietary format and intentionally breaking compatibility with other office suites.
>>
>>55764587
Darn

>>55764594
Fair enough then, thought it was the other way round. I'll just make libre my default and get used to it then.

Russian pleb here, gonna buy the OnePlus 3.
Seems like there's only china model available here and no EU ones, and the difference is that EU version supports LTE band 20 and the china one doesn't.
I think network providers cover most of the bands anyway and I would get slower connection at worst case scenario, but still much faster than 3G. So is this a big deal or not?

Not useful at all in my experience, I ended up giving mine to my mother, heart rate monitor not accurate, steps not accurate and already recorded on phone, don't really need notifications on my wrist, battery life pretty poor.

I wrote a python script that sets up the cloud, generates a lot of files etc.
I would like to automatically clean everything up, basically reverse the process in case of any error along the way.
How would I do that?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Provide more details as to what you actually want to do e.g. What is the cloud? What files are generated? Where is this script to be ran? When? Why?
>>
Are we supposed to guess what you did and tell you what to delete? Just undo what you did. Delete the files you created.

Just how safe is it to use this operating system when doing questionable things on the internet? Microsoft always promises to not collect identifiable information, but the arrest of Mr. Subway himself makes me doubt that.

Windows 7 until it's unworkable, Linux after.

Already partially using linux on peripheral devices.

You should upgrade your media center, a new generation i3 with integrated graphics would be much more power efficient and would actually be faster for media center reasons, the iGPU on the new gen intel CPUs has hardware decoding for HEVC and VP9 so 1080p and 4k video decoding is nice and smooth. Your HD 4850 would struggle with anything 4k.

I plan on setting up my own media center when Kabylake comes out.
>>
>>55764313
When zen and vega come out the pc on the left is going to become the media center

Why doesn't Android give you the option to group notifications by app like both iOS and Windows Phone do? I'm an Android user and it bugs me that Android doesn't do this but instead mix up notifications from different apps; it feels very disorganized in comparison.

>>
>>55764119
it's sad that they removed that option in ios10.
>>
>>55764480
iOS 10 still does it. You can still clearly see the notifications grouped by app.
>>
It will in Android N....and it will take years to have a high userbase.

android sucks

Are they worth it if your livelyhood depends on media creation?

Not worth spending more than $100 on one.

Depends how often you suffer from power outages/brownouts/dips.

They happen so rarely here that I don't feel its worth it.
If your work flow cannot be interrupted then by all means get one, otherwise its just money wasted.
>>
If it's for media creation then probably. A 1500VA unit will provide power for a high end computer pulling 200-300w for ~20 minutes. Higher power draw will reduce this to 5-10 minute run time.

It's not worth a multithousand dollar unit unless you are running a server that NEEDS 24/7 uptime.
>>
>>55764113
I think they're less important than good, clean storage system such as a SAN or ZFS/BTRFS NAS if your budget is tight. I also think that's less important than the tools you use for your media creation. They're definitely an important part of your system though.
