Computer displays had been using various reduced-saturation gamuts as a defacto standard since color displays first became common, and a sort of median of the practicing art was declared the standard to try to unify things a bit. Otherwise you had the bad old days where Mac moniotrs didn't work right on PCs and so on, due to differing gammas etc.
