Is it time to pull the trigger?
I have a 3750K and 16GB ram... it feels like it would be a nice boost in performance if I upgrade... but I mean, it's not like I absolutely need an upgrade.
Quite frankly, the last time that I ugpraded I didnt really need it either. Back then it was from a Q6600 to a 3750K.
It feels more like any software that is slow is slow because it's written badly... not because my hardware is bad.
>everything JUST WERKS
>you literally never have to use command line, though you can
>DEs are nicely preconfigured and ready to work
>everything is nicely preconfigured and ready to werk
>likely to update automagically
>most popular distro, so any problem is easily fixed by googling
>to install vlc you just type "apt -y install vlc" or use your mouse to install it from software center
>to install vlc you fucking create a config file where you put USE flags for all desired codecs, otherwise VLC will be installed without them, you may also need to recompile half of your system
>absolutely retarded and relatively small community
>more likely to break on update
>WILL break if you don't update every month
>they didn't update a vulnerable version of firefox for a couple of weeks once, due to fucking bureaucracy
>nothing is preconfigured
>you also need to compile every program on your own computer for no real reason
>you are likely to need to recompile some already installed programs when you install a new one, because thay had some features disabled by default for no obvious reason
>if you, say, want to install the whole xfce environment, you install all the programs one by one, because there is no package like "xfce4-goodies".
>it is FUCKING VULNERABLE TO MITM IN 2017 (https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=597804 notice how it's importance is rated as "normal")
>though being vulnerable to MITM it has a "hardened" version which shows us how retarded the community is
>does not release a livedvd on regular basis
>at least until recently, its minimal install CD didn't even support efi
>portage is the most complicated GNU/linux package manager to ever exist
>portage is broken beyond repair
>again, you configure a lot of things manually, though more is done automatically than on Gentoo
>community is retarded, though not as much as that of Gentoo
>software is too fresh
>more likely to break on update than Gentoo
>claims itself to be KISS but uses systemd
can we discuss how underappreciated edge is?
>compatible with ublock origin
>uses very little resources while being very fast
>amazing tab management that's much better than firefox or chrome
the only cons are that it only supports vp9 and there's no copy url option when you right click and image.
other than that it's probably the best browser for windows 10.
>it lectures me about white privilege during install
Who in their right mind would become a game programmer or a game developer in general?
>no guarantee of success
>wasting skills in an industry where you can be making a lot more for easier work
Only madmen do that occupation
If you want help:
>Assemble parts list
>State the budget for your build (and country if not USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - [email protected]~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - [email protected] maxed, [email protected] at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - [email protected] /[email protected] at high
>GTX 1080 - [email protected] / [email protected] maxed, [email protected] in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - [email protected] and [email protected] maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor
>just checked cpu
That's too high right? I just shut the Shit down.
Why the fuck does this connector still exist in 2017?
ITT: Good Inkjet Printers for domestic/home use.
Bump, i never see g talk about printers much. Lesse what bullshit these autists spout
>never see g talk about printers
This. I'm just curious as to why there are never printer threads on /g/. It is a technology that I'm fairly sure nearly everyone on the board uses.
Some idiot made this. Can you fix it?
Best Buy employee here that got forced into the Apple Master position, ask me anything.
Forced into it? Don't they lend you a free iPhone 7 and Apple watch? Sounds cool to me. I work PCs as well, but it's easy to make rev and engage customers when they see that you're an apple master.
It's easier to sell ,sure. I hate that I'm the only one at work that has an Apple watch though. Even though we have 2 apple watch demos, I get all the calls about it because nobody wants to just learn. Everyone pawns off their customers to me.
>nu/g/: censorship is okay as long as it's against people I dislike
I want off this ride right fucking now.
An undocumented Windows update was pushed by Microsoft last night.
After updating, Windows gave no information about what the update does.
Clicking on the More info link in Windows leads to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4033637
A concerned user asked in the windows community help forum what it does.
The Microsoft representative responded
>May we know why you're asking for this specific update?
This is very suspicious.
Talk me out of it /g/. The only thing I care about is a big screen and aesthetics.
Was anybody else sad about vista's death?
It was arguably Microsoft's best looking operating system.
It got some shit at launch, but even after\before so, what went wrong?
And why cant you use it in 2017?
