Bump, i never see g talk about printers much. Lesse what bullshit these autists spout
>>

>never see g talk about printers

This. I'm just curious as to why there are never printer threads on /g/. It is a technology that I'm fairly sure nearly everyone on the board uses.

this is best printer imo in terms of practicality.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LJEFAOM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

my main points for searching for a printer was
>all in one
>able to scan/photocopy legal size
>no fax
>refillable ink at costco

its really good so far
>>
>>62159946
>BONUS POINTS FOR FREE AS IN FREEDOM PRINTERS
I don't think there is a single one on the market

which is kinda weird, since the 3D printing industry has many FOSS friendly options
>>
You'd be better off spending a little bit more for a laserjet printer.
>>
The reason you never see an all-in-one inkjet printer thread on /g/ is because they ALL suck.

The entire industry sells their printers at cost or below cost and intentionally design them to print very inefficiently so that they can make their profit selling you refill cartridges. There isn't really any desirable difference between them because quality control is poor in every single company that makes them and whether or not you get a good printer is nothing more than a roll of the dice every time.

What else is there to discuss?
Just get a $100 Monochrome Laser Printer and be done with it.

I've made a couple printer threads and they dropped off page 10 without a single post
>>
Cheap printers use overpriced cartridges and are designed to drink them like a vampire. Expensive printers use cheaper cartridges and are much more ink efficient.

Budget printers are not cheap.

This.
Also the answer to these threads is always to get a cheap laserjet secondhand, preferably a brother and use cheap toner.

If you need colour, go to a specialised shop.
Don't fall for the printing Jew.

Yeah, but I need color and I can't afford a color laserjet. The replacement cartridges for laserjets are extremely expensive.
>>
Brother DCP-J140w, i've shilled it here before, very happy with it. The cartridges have no chips, you just need to buy a set of refillable ones for 10$ and after that you just fill em up when they get empty. The printer also remembers to do a printhead cleaning every week so you don't have to. Don't think they make this model anymore, but DCP-J132w should be the newer model. Look for the "w" models as they have wifi.
>>
Those Canon Pixmas are nice, I have one. And hoe much fucking printing of your waifus are you idiots doing to be worried about changing the cartridges all the time?

Buy 3rd party toners.
>>

This.

Reasonable support on Linux too. Duplexing, ADF all work.
>>

All I got from that ad was:

>Take pictures with Canon DSLR.
>Can't share them.
>>
>>62162185

No problem. Worth noting is that i haven't tried the newer models so they may have started adding chips to their cartridges... I can at least say that anything using LC985 and LC980 cartridges is confirmed not to have ink chips.
>>
>>62162142
>no chips
Good luck finding one of those for sale.
>>
Funny, i was just looking for a printer and found this thread.

Anything decent for a ~$50 bucks budget? i found a deskjet 4675 for $65 bucks, which has a free drone included (no idea how's a drone related to a printer, but still) and seems pretty cool, but i read it uses a lot of ink and HP cartridges aren't particularly cheap.
I also found a Samsung M2020 for $45 bucks, it's a laser printer, it's cheap and apparently toners are cheap as well (About 20 bucks, but they last about 2000 pages), however unlike the previous one it just prints in black and its extremely limited when it comes to connectivity (USB... and thats all, no WiFi, not even ethernet)
>>
Which is the best brand?

not recommended unless you print photos, or if you need something lightweight to carry with your laptop.

go laser, and go big if you can
- higher resolution and details
- faster print times
- less maintenance problem. much less jamming problems
- no ink drying out (toner's a powder)
- toner *seems* expensive, but one cartridge will last you YEARS. inkjet you'll be buying those $65 5ml cartridges every 3 months. inkjet is more expensive by weight than gold!
- only downside is weight, size, and electricity

inkjet printers are cheap on purpose to entice you to buy ink. they practically give them away (I remember when they used to sell 25 or 30 dollar inkjet printers; those had the smallest ink cartridges you'll ever see).

Inkjet printers literally almost caused a divorce in my house. Yes my marriage sucks but Epson put it over the edge. Fuck you epson with your bullshit cartridges and the printers saying they're not genuine when they're in fact the official non counterfeit epson branded carts. Fuck you never again.

I ended up spending $400 ($200 after rebate) on a Canon Pixma Pro-100. This beast has never had a single issue and the photo quality is as good as it gets. The only problem, you cannot print under Linux. The cups package even has a note that they cannot figure this printer out. Small price to pay for peace in my house.
>>
>>62162566
>The only problem, you cannot print under Linux. The cups package even has a note that they cannot figure this printer out.
Why the fuck do printers still need special drivers? This kinda crap should be standardized by now.
>>
>>62162555
checked.

This is old news. Refillable cartridges have exploded over the past 8 months and the generic ink that you can buy for inkjets is super cheap now.

Funny considering Epson is one of the least shitty printer brands, at least compared to HP and Canon
They were also the first ones to sell printer with OOTB rechargeable cartridges
Not a shill btw, they all fucking suck, but if i had to choose the one that sucks the most HP would be, by far, my choice.
>>
>>62162591
Do you still need drivers if it's a network printer? or its just impossible to print under loonix on some printers?
>>

I've seen this guy before. The printers he usually talks about cost between $400 to $800 dollars.

And yes, I'm talking about inkjets.
>>
>>62162050
That's why toner only needs to be changed on the order of once every 1000 pages vs ink which is 1 every 100 pages.

HP F300 3-in-1, extremely cheap,
Easy maintenance, and third-party cartridges are cheap.
And you can even fill the cartridges yourself.

HP 4675 uses the 652 cartridges which are easily re-filleble, but require a little bit of cleaning.

>>62162251

>>
>>62162723
>Do you want color?
It would be a huge plus, i wouldn't be printing on color like 95% of the time, but still.
Anyways, if giving up color means i'd save hundreds on cartridges, then im ok with it.

>HP 4675 uses the 652 cartridges which are easily re-filleble
According to their web they use 664 cartridges, which, according to some places i'v read, they have a 2ml capacity... which is fucking bullshit and last about 100 pages.
I don't mind refilling if it's each 1000 or 700 pages or so, but not 100.
Any recommendation for my budget? i could go a little higher if it's worth it.
>>
>>62162791
Sorry it was different printer.
Yes, 664 cartridges doesn't hold much because there's little piece of plastic that separate the chamber making it houses less ink.
You ca buy 664XL cartridges and re-fill it yourself

How many papers do you want to print in one month?
>>
>>62162876
Could, but that's $35 more i could just spend on a better printer with higher capacity cartridges, so i don't really see the point.
Don't take me wrong, i'm not a cheap bastard, just a poor mf, on a lot of debt and on college.

>Does the WiFi mean the printer runs a dedicated print server? How well does this works with GNU/Linux

Yes, you specify the SSID and password on the printer's LCD menu to connect it to the router. After that you need to download an .sh script from Brother's website to install and configure it on your linux machine. The script just downloads and installs a few .debs and prompts you for things like IP etc.

Network scanning works too, but it seems like there's not enough bandwidth to scan at 1200DPI over wifi, so i just scan at 600-ish.
