Just won an auction I bid on while drunk, for an old IBM HS20 blade.
I thought I could fuck around with it but it seems like you need a blade... holder (?) to provide power, etc.
Luckily it won't cost me much more than a few beers, but I'd still like to put it to use if I can. Are there any other solutions that buying a rack to seat it in?
pic related. fucking proprietary connectors, reeee

The thing you plug blades into is usually called a chassis. That's the main point of blades, they offload some shared infrastructure like power into the chassis so it doesn't have to be in the servers, and you can get higher density that way. Blade servers are for people with big server needs who have more money than rack space.
You may be able to find a cheap old blade chassis from whatever kind of outfit sold you a cheap old blade server. Hopefully it's nearby, since those things take up like 8U of rack space and are as heavy as that sounds. Also they're loud, even by rack server standards. And the whole thing is pretty silly even by hobby-project standards unless you're planning to get more blades to stuff into the thing. That's the whole point of it.
If I were you I'd take the CPUs, RAM, and any drives out of it and buy some cheap superannuated ATX mobo to put them in.

Thanks for the insight, I've asked the seller if they have a chassie for it, as they have 10 other blades of the same spec so it seems likely they would. Maybe an orange pi would make a better media server...
For the record each blade is 4x 1GB RAM, 2x 3.2GB Xenon and at least 2x 74GB HDD.

>doesn't know what a blade server is
>complains about buying a single blade without a chassis
>not realising that they sound like a fucking jet engine
Should I replace LVS cable or the screen ? help me out
you broke your screen and you want to replace a cable?
>Mac
You're fuck.
this qualifies as a stupid question
a thread died for this
If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming
GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM
General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

thanks for the help /g/, build is done, now waiting for the case to arrive.
New to all this. Is there a /g/ approved decent pc build for gaming for around £600-700? Wanna play ffxii decently. In UK

Isn't 85° a bit too high? I would go safe and set it at 75° imho.
Intel is finished and bankrupt. How do we disrupt these vile antisemitic business practices?

I personally see LG as the patrician choice due to actually putting out consistently good products and not jacking up the price to give a false sense of quality

least resource intensive video player for debian?
think anyone can achieve WSL without w10 or vm, like with w8.1 or w7? i need linux system but it's too much to do vm, especially i need it for dev task but i need my computer for gaming too. w10 is too inconsistent and buggy af.
>>61433607
Which resources? Seems like something that uses the hardware decoder intensively would be a good thing, no? What's your target hw?

Hello /g/
I've been running a 3570k and a 7970 for the last half-decade, and I feel it's time for an upgrade. This combo of mine still runs most, if not all games at or above 144Hz, but it's starting to really chugg slowly sometimes.
Got any recommendations on CPU/GPU combos? Money it's *really* an issue, but I'd like to stay under $700.
>>61433493
>This combo of mine still runs most, if not all games at or above 144Hz
No it doesn't.
>>61433506
I meant to say on low settings, whoops.
>>61433493
For most games, you probably do not need a new CPU. Get a GTX 1080, or wait for Vega's at the end of this month.
