If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

Is it worth the extra $30 to get a modular gold power supply?
>>
>>61422893
Depends on how heavily you use your computer (& at what load)
If you use it a real lot and do gaming stuff (so uses a lot of both CPU and GPU) so 2 - 3 hours a day at least then yeah definitely, very worth in the long run
Otherwise not so much, but getting a good/better PSU never really hurt anyone

not really. its not something that actually effects the computer's performance. If I recall, the CXM 450 is on a good 'sale' rn if you want a cheap good quality semi-modular.

No, it's not wide enough to get anywhere close to it
The NH-D15 however is close enough to get very close to it (and is the only one along the D14 to do that), but it has an S version making the heatsink start higher and the fans can be put higher too so it's all good
>>
>>61423068

1600X is not worth, just buy the 1600. Also the extra case fans aren't really needed. You should put that money into bigger storage, 250gb isn't gonna last long.
>>
>>61423058
No it's not a troll, a Dell prebuilt is probably a garbage PC and since he said "somewhat ok" i'm assuming his iGPU died or something like that so he doesn't need something that can actively game well

I'd get an air cooler instead of that because it'll perform better at the same price, or similarly at a cheaper one
I'd also get a 1600 instead and overclock it to 3.8 - 3.9
Also jesus christ is that 1080ti expensive

The case already has two fan included though i have no idea of their size
>>
>>61423485
Yea I'll switch them out for whatever fan is on special when I go there. The phantek fans seem to be quite well spoken of at $13/fan (on sale)
>>
So I have an R5 1600 with 2933MHz sticks in dual channel, and am wondering about side-effects of running them at that speed compared to 2133MHz for a long duration. Especially if I don't particularly need the performance boost and wouldn't mind restarting to enable it.

Using the Wraith Spire, and enabling 2933MHz reconfigures the fan curve by default to run at double the idle RPM (900 -> 1800).
>>
>>61423902
RAM should have no impact on your fan curve, just change it to normal. Now if it is somehow increasing your CPU temps by a significant amount then something else is happening. Maybe the motherboard is shoving too much voltage into the CPU or SOC which can happen if they're set to "Auto" on some boards.

Can't you manually set a fan curve? It's obviously a problem with the BIOS if increasing RAM frequency is somehow causing your fan curve to change.

My own 3570K at 4.3Ghz will not play 4K60 videos on YouTube, regardless of hardware acceleration configuration (with a Radeon 7850/R7 265).

With that in mind, I'm building a desktop for my parents. Does anyone know the cheapest new CPU that will exceed this aforementioned benchmark?
>>
>>61424922
Right, then l guess it's no bad. You could sell that 6600k and complete to buy a non-k 6700 which will perform way better and last longer, assuming you can find decent deals. Then do the same with the gpu next year when all cryptominers are genocided.
>>
>>61425003
Radeon 7850/265 do not have hardware accelerated VP9 decoding and neither does your CPU. That's why it's slow.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VP9#Hardware_implementations
>>
>>61425003
G4560 should work with the iGPU. Ryzen 3 with a 1030 GT or something similar would also work.
>>

Maybe check kaby lake bechmarks first, for 4k 60 fps
>>
>>61425439
4k30 should work, 4k60 AFAIK is experimental and isn't hardware supported widely yet. So you'll just need a beefy CPU for it right now generally. Maybe some of the new GPUs actually support 4k60 for VP9, not sure on that.
>>
I'm building this and live in Norway.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HgMJ9W
Most of the parts are from my old build and I'll only be buying
-CPU
-Motherboard
-RAM
-AM4 CPU fan mounting kit
I also have two questions.

The RAM product number is CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 and when checking against the mobo QVL CMK16GX4M2B3200C16W and CMK16GX4M2B3200C16R show up. Am I right to assume that these are just different color versions?

Can I use the thermal paste I used ~3 years ago? It's the nt-h1.

Feedback is appreciated and thanks in advance!
>>
>>61425689
Yes they are just color variations as far as I can tell. And yes you can use the same paste as long as it is still in good condition and not dried out. If you kept it sealed in the tube it should be fine.

Cryptocurrency is a volatile market. Bitcoin went from $1400 to $300 to over $2300.

Right now people are selling because Bitcoin is changing their protocol and they're in a panic. So many people selling at once drops the price. The price of the cryptoking dropping so fast scares people about the idea of cryptocurrency so some people are trying to sell all sorts of cryptocurrency at once, which again means a price drop. Once August 1st passes and everyone sees that it's actually fine, cryptocurrency will start to behave like normal.

Months? Many OEMs are having trouble getting GPU cores from Nvidia, and there's a rumor that Nvidia themselves are having trouble getting them from the semiconductor manufacturer since they typically have months of orders to go through at any given time. This probably extends to AMD as well.

Some OEMs are even planning on making GPUs dedicated to mining, so worst case is we have to wait until those are on the market before the current GPUs return to their original retail price.

As to upgrades. the Ryzen series and the AM4 platform are brand new. AM4 will last until 2020 at least, and should you want to upgrade, there's a good solid upgrade path in the future without changing the motherboard. B350 and X370 boards support overclocking with SLI being X370 only.

depends on the workload. When I was doing x264 with my CPU then it would benefit bigly by having HT turned on. This may benefit more recent games as well.
Older games, though, benefit with HT turned off, because you get higher single core performance. It scales weirdly with HT for some reason.

I think I'm just gonna bite the bullet and buy either a 1080 or a 1080ti. They're both $70 over their MSRP.

Now I just have to decide which flavor I want; the one that's cheaper, or the one that will last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years longer for $200 more.

1060/580 is an extremely marginal upgrade over a 970, unless you really, really need the extra vram.

DAILY REMINDER:

ETH mining isn't going away, even if prices crash. MOST miners will continue even if they lose money on every hash for a potential gain in future spikes. They do not care about current pricing and you will not see some mythical cheap GPU flood.

The doing selloffs will just RMA them under an extended warranty they bought, and then flip the new/refreshed card on ebay for way above MSRP, or sell the several they have as a lot to other miners. Most of these cards will be completely fucked and still above MSRP.

We are all fucked and all you can do is wait and hope that Vega/Volta is shit for mining, that 1080s come down in price, or try to get a 1050ti for cheap, or hope for a mass restock on 1060 3GB's

Even if you do happen to get a stock notification on a 570/580, the cheapest price I have seen in the last 2 months on a 570 was still 280$ for a 4GB unit, and those sold out within 10 mins.

depends. If you change it for a different motherboard, Windows 10 may throw a fit and unactivate itself... or it may not. Seems to be really inconsistent with that
The motherboard is what EVERYTHING connects to. Hence motherboard. Replacing it can be time intensive because you have to unhook everything from it. It's a pita on some pre-built desktops since soem of them use BGA laptop CPUS which aren't user serviceable, so they can't be removed.

likely nothing. The operating system is on the SSD or HDD, not the motherboard. The motherboard is just what everything connects to. If using a Windows version before 10, it won't care what motherboard you have

Nice. Is there any fuckery with drivers?

Did you just recently start to like AMD?
>>

Nah. I am just surprised that we are 2 weeks out from launch and AMD has literally done nothing to drive up hype or excitement for an architecture they have been hyping since 2016.

in general, no. drivers are generally for the operating system, but it won't hurt to grab drivers from the motherboard's website

Really happy with how this build turned out. Still not sure if the Asus mobo was worth it over the Asrock or Gigabyte models. About to move my build into a Define Mini C from a Node 804 if only because i'm board with the 804

what is the thing with freesync/gsync, why would I want it?
would it make the experience of using a high refresh rate screen better, even more if I couldn't maintain 144fps+ all the time?
>>
>>61430611
It hides frame drops really well.
Like going from 144 fps to 100 fps is extremely noticeable on a normal monitor but Freesync/gsync hides the drop really well.
>>
>>61430634
that's nice to know, just one more question now, are there any (or will be on a near future) 27'' 1440p 144Hz IPS screens with freesync?
>>
>>61430666
Any high monitor that doesn't have Gsync will have Freesync. But Freesync itself is needs an update soon and you might want to hold off till Freesync 2 if the reason you are buying a monitor is for Freesync.

Hey /pcbg/,
today I need your help for once, I just put a build together for my cousin and I did run into some little bumps I would like to clarify.
Parts for reference:
R5 1600 non X
MSI PC Mate (mobo)
G.Skill Trident 16GB 3000MHz CL15-16-16-35
I don’t have experience with MSI UEFI or Ryzen CPUs so here’s some stuff I want to clarify.
First after installing Winshit and updating the UEFI botnet I could only choose from two XMP profiles the fastest one gave me 2933MHz and a stepping I can’ remember but not 15-16-16-35, can I just manually put in the values and the clock I want it to run or no chance it will run at 3000MHz?
Second the R5 1600 is only running @3,4GHz all core instead of 3,6GHz it should be running on. I didn’t look into CPU options on the BIOS because I wanted to read up info on OC because so far only OCed INTEL CPUs.
I did Prime95 it to test if the RAM is stable in 2933MHz and what the temps are with the cooler I did choose with it (51°C at 100% load on all cores) and the CPU only did 3,4GHz all core.
The Mobo has a AutoOC function which puts the Ryzen R5 on 3,7GHz @1,4V which is a little to high for my comfort so I put it off for now and will later manualy look how high I can get it stable with are more comfy Voltage.

So any Idea why it does only 3,4GHz instead of 3,6GHz on stock? Is the 3,6GHz single core boost?
Also I already put the power plan on high performance so can rule that out.

English is not my native language so feel free to call me retarded
>>

Is the RAM on the QVL?

Adding an ssd later and a GTX 1070 or Rx 580 once they're available

>>61430896
Ryzen 1600 has a base clock of 3.2ghz and a turbo of 3.6ghz.

>>
>>61430905
Thanks a lot Anon. You helped me a lot and taught me some stuff. Going to reinstall windows 10 tomorrow.
>>
would turning down all game settings that are not resolution/resolution scale allow for minimum of > 60 fps on a gtx 1080 on 1440p?

let's say on battlefield 1 for example
>>
>>61430924
question is why doesn't it boost/turbo to 3,6GHz under full load
>>
>>61430993
those turbos are single core turbo only, and IF you have enough cooling, you also get that extra 750MHz of turbo too
>>
>>61430993
>>61430993
Did you turn on turbo in the bios?
>>
>>61430959
The 1600x doesn't come with a stock cooler and I'm using the X370 because it's better for overclocking and has 3 PCIe.
Is there anything wrong?
>>
>>61431034
ah i'm fucking retarded, if its not automatic on then no i didn't holy shit i am fucking dumb.
thanks anon you helped today

Ryzen also has some kind of "cool and quiet" option that you can turn off so it boosts more readily

Posted my own thread and I guess that was a mistake so here I am.

So what exactly would be the best case for this kind of build?

I've been thinking of getting a mid tower (the Fractal Design S to be exact since it's cheap) but thinking about it, I don't know if my water cooler will fit and if there is enough airflow for my gpu and water cooler to cool down sufficiently.

Any advice?

I need help, what is the cheapest gaming PC you guys can build?
I lost my PC in an accident and won't be able to get all the investment back for a while.
Ignore high graphics or things like those, the only requirement is it can run games without it having too low of a frame rate.
>>
>>61432227
budget?
G4560+1050ti is a good cheap build. Or maybe wait for ryzen 3.
>>
>>61432262
Right now I can probably afford $400, I have a monitor, mouse and all the other stuff covered, and I have a case.
I probably should just save up and be patient but I'm tired of phone posting and having nothing to do.
>>
Troubleshooting my friends PC. His 7700 (non-k) has temperature spiking all over the place. Could it be a thermal paste application problem or is it intel being shit? Should I help him remove his heatsink and check? That would involve me getting alcohol to remove it and new paste to replace it with and I really don't want to do it unless I have to.
>>
>>61432330
Buy a ryzen 3 and upgrade later to a higher end ryzen 5 or 7 cpu and better graphics card like GTX 1070
