Is it possible to cut the 5V/GND lines from an USB 2/3 connection and use only the data lines when the usb devices are actively powered?

Reason is that I want to avoid that some cheap active usb hub accidentally feeds power back into my PC.

this.

also, my pringles can is empty. help?
>>
Just remove the 5v line. You need to the ground to be common so that the usb devices can communicate. http://www.instructables.com/id/Adding-an-external-power-supply-to-a-cheap-USB-hub/
>>
>>1134022
depends.
some devices monitor 5v line to detect plug/unplug before enabling the usb peripheral/interface.
you might not even need the 0v. in theory at all but in practice if neither is reference isolated.

I'm trying to figure out how I would sew on layers on a toy, like this Pabu.

I've drafted a pattern for the head of my toy, but I don't know how or when I'd add these layers. The design is too intricate to incorporate into the main pattern for the head, so I'll have to sew it on top. (The little spikey markings of the eyebrows.)

I was thinking I could applique the dark markings onto a white panel, then applique that completed group onto the flattened head pieces (with left, gusset, right sewn together) before I join it all into a ball.

Any ideas?

These guys look like they were done with the same technique, but I don't know how you'd do it.

I'd guess it would be handstitched onto the face after stuffing perhaps? But I can't see any visible stitching.
>>
>>1133990
There's visible stitching in this image, but it doesn't look like the white is part of the overall face pattern...?
>>
There was some people here a while back ago that where making stuffed animals by machine and some by hand sewing.. Idk if they are even around anymore its been some time... Did you try asking a board on reddit dedicated to this shit?

Hi /diy/

I'm still setting up my controllers for my automated farming project.

Right now I'm configuring a web control panel hosted on a rPi zero webserver (using esp8266 for wifi). I'm having trouble deciding how I should connect to this rPi control server from a computer or mobile device.

I don't wish to use bluetooth because it's not as available on desktops, wifi keeps the options open.

I don't know if I should host a wifi network on the the raspberry pi with a redirect to the control panel for all http connections.

Or if I should have the raspberry pi connect to wifi. This presents a problem because the network would have to be preconfigured. Although these days someone could easily host a wifi hotspot network on their phone that its set to auto connect to.

I'm kinda favoring hosting a network on the pi with a network configuration section in the control panel for it to connect to a local router.

What would you guys say is a convenient way to get a headless IoT project online for configuration by a user?

I would simply add a dns entry in my router. DHCP reservation too probably because its just easier than trying to keep track of what flavour of the week setting static ip in Linux is now. Fucking systemd you don't need a hundred layers of network managers
>>
>>1133589

Just do dual wifi. Cheap wifi modules are like $1.50 free shipping.

The parts of horticulture you can automate can be done with timers. The parts you can't involve manual inspection.

What are you trying to automate, exactly? BC if you're not in there every few days you'll miss one of the thousand things that can go wrong but isn't big deal if you catch it early.

Hey guys. Found this old microwave transformer.

I see the bottom is the low side as the conductor is larger and there are fewer windings. Is this where I input myou 120v single phase power?

What leads would I come off to produce an arc between for etching wood as per the hobby.

Thanks for all your help.

I've already spliced and made the 120V connection. Was I supposed to use the ground on the 120v power in anywhere? I don't see any connection points.

>>
I tried and am having no luck. I was under the impression that the high side of the transformer is a single wire in a coil. If I touched them together after injecting power on the low side aren't the supposed to arc?
>>
>>1133504
Primary Coil: the one with the thicker wire, which has fewer wraps, that you connect to your 120VAC power mains

Secondary Coil: the one with the thinner wire, which has more wraps, produces the kilovolts and death and arcing

Sometimes there is a 3rd coil which only has a few turns of wire. Don't use that one. It can be removed.

The frame needs to be grounded.

Is that your MOT in the image? That looks like the top is the secondary coil and the bottom is the primary coil. The 2 white wires on the bottom should be the 120VAC connection.

The top coil looks like it has 3 wires, including the one coming off that top tab. The short white wire with the blur tab should be the secondary coil wire, you can see the other end of it attached to the frame right behind it in that image. Those other two thick wires should be the 3rd coil. Ignore those, just safely secure them so they don't touch anything.

The arc will travel between the frame and that short white wire on the top.

Remember, keep one hand behind your back at all times.

My fridge seems to be having trouble keeping the fridge and freezer compartments cool enough. I have tried turning the settings to colder but the temp has not changed much if at all.

How fucked am I.

That will be $300 for an inspection maam, after that we will be able to tell you what needs to be fixed and how much that will cost.
>>
>>1133374
Check the coils in the back and clean the crud off them if needed. Check the freezer compartment. Is it iced up? Defrost it. That is basically all you can do. If your compressor is failing or you have a coolant leak it will be cheaper to get another fridge than to repair your existing one. See if your locality has some kind of refrigerator exchange program. If your fridge is old enough they might give you a more efficient model for free. Don't mention that it is broken.
>>
>>1133381
I keep the coils clean and the freezer frost free. The only exchange I am aware of is a $25 rebate. The fridge is the same model as the OP (Westinghouse RJ522), pretty old one but nice size and worked well until now.

Could something in the freezer department be obstructing airflow?

1st time poster here. I work at a pizza shop and they told me to fix this broken drawer slider. They have tried gluing it and duct taping it but it always breaks. Whta would be the best way to go about doing a permanent or semipermanent fix? L-brackets or something?

except by the time you clean it all up and shit you would be better throwing it in the trash and getting a new one, it's only a bent bit of metal.
>>
>>1130017
is that plastic? replace it
L brackets if you're not going to replace it
if it's metal, just weld it

Does anyone have any insight on moving a single-wide trailer either DIYing it with rented or borrowed equipment, or how much it should cost? I get a wide variety of figures thrown at me.

I'm looking at starting to rent-to-own a singlewide and own it in 48 months and hopefully accomplish my dream of being a homeowner, but moving it off the lot seems expensive in the $8k range. Any advice for a fatherless bastard is appreciated.

I live in Europe, and literally 99% of houses built before the 90s have asbestos plates underneath the roof tiles.

How worried should I be about living in a home that has these?

These plates aren't exposed to the elements, so there's that.

>>
>>1134234
as long as you dont plan to remove or work on it and just leave it as is, not at all
>>
>>1134234
in north america asbestos that has been installed generally is safe, its only a hazard if you try to move it/repair it
>>
>>1134234
Asbestos is only notably hazardous when inhaled. As long as the plates remain intact, you won't experience any adverse effects.

I want to make this so I can have the drawer only pull out a little before stopping. I was thinking adding something into the white that goes through the blue area such as a screw, but I also need it to be conceled as much as possible and it needs to be removable. Suggestions?
14 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Why?
>>
>>1134006
I want it to seem as if it is jammed because there is a space underneath the drawer that can be used for hidden storage.
>>
if that was the goal, why not just make a false bottom

Forgive my ignorance.

These are mouse guts. I only want the scroll wheel and maybe the left and right buttons. The optics are unneeded. Is it possible I could rip any of these doodads off the surface of the PCB and have those parts still function? If I could chop off any of this extra PCB that would be nice too but it's not important.

the led and the little resistor can

Want a side /biz that is an entertaining hobby also.

Considering custom epoxy resin furniture.

Have basic woodworking experience.

Have played with small amounts of epoxy.

Have bro working at chemical company so i can ship 55 gallon drums to my door.

Know a guy with a saw mill that sells cheap kiln dried lumber.

Using 10 friends, torches, and the flame method a case of beer or two should be the only cost to get bubbles out.

If need be i have the materials to build a vacumn chamber large enough to park a car in. Just need an expensive pump.

Any money to be made in this?

>also any ideas or pics of epoxy resin wood shit.
