Find a job at Walmart or Wendys or something and save up, hang out in a bookstore or library when you're not working or sleeping, make sure you park in major parking lots so you don't get yelled at for hanging around or have someone try to tow you. If you don't have a car, ask some buddies to bum for a couple nights, more than one, and ask if you can rotate couches for a few months. It takes an almost autistic level of dedication and time to get mild results. It's taken me this long to be able to comfortably read a newspaper.

Even then, I can barely hold a conversation with anyone. It takes me roughly 10 minutes to construct a broken paragraph.

Mate, Japanese is a language spoken only on an island inhabited by depressed xenophobes. It's not the greatest language to learn. I've known it for years and it never gave me any opportunities in the real life (although I never regretted learning it). If you want to increase your chances of getting a job or something jap is one of the last languages you want to learn. Still, it's better than nothing.
