It aged like milk.
>>
They ruined it by revamping some basic mechanics back in 2007, so many updates were added after that that didn't really add anything substantial and only made the game worse
>>
We're all taking refugee in Medivia.

Same great old game, good updates, same retarded playerbase.

Why did Earthbound become such a cultural phenomena? Why did it get so popular when back when Earthbound was released it wasn't that popular outside Japan?
20 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>4164775

Because it's a certain type of Japanese game that almost never gets released in the West. If more games like Gokinjou Boukentai, Famicom Bunko, G.O.D., etc were released stateside, the particular lure of Earthbound wouldn't be so huge
>>

>Why did Earthbound become such a cultural phenomena?

Earthbound was not a cultural phenomenon. The vast majority of people have never heard of it.
>>
>Why did Earthbound become such a cultural phenomena?

It isn't though. It's still pretty obscure

Good that you were born at the right time for machine translations then
>>
I'm upset that none of the classic Tengai Makyou games have gotten translations either even though the series is made to sound so notable. You can't even blame it on the game being "too foreign" for western audiences what with the big influx of feudal japanese DQ clones being translated in recent years.
>>
>>4164442
From what I remember, the problem with translating Tengai Makyou was because it used Kanji instead of Kana

Has anyone here ever had a really bad experience at a retro game store? Overpriced, terrible selection, fake / broken games, bad owners, etc. If so tell us your story here.

>ever had a really bad experience at a retro game store?

A new retro game shop opened in my home town so I went to check it out. They had an okay selection but not one game had a price tag. Asked how much a snes game was and the guy told me to hang on while the guy goes on eBay to check prices directly in front of me where I can see everything. Needless to say they didn't even make it 3 months.
>>
>>4163740
I've had that happen before at pawn shops. You can pull up eBay on your phone and know the price they're going to tell you before they even come back to tell you. One time a shop had a copy of Jackie Chan on NES I asked how much, and the dude came back and said $190. I looked up the game on ebay and sorted only by highest price first, sure enough $185 + $4.75 shipping. lol
>>
>bring game up to counter
>cashier grins and cheerfully says "Hey, that's a great game!"
>tell him "I know, asshole. That's why I'm buying it."
Why do these scumbags find it necessary to do this shit?

What is the best USB controller for retro games basically anything before the N64.

I was thinking of buying a USB SNES controller but maybe a USB Saturn controller is best?

Or are there any good game pads out there?

>>
>>4163648
I've got a decent USB SNES pad that feels like a pretty close replica of the real thing, but I never liked the SNES d-pad in the first place and prefer a six-button layout. Saturn USB pads outside of the super-rare SLS controller all seem to have shitty d-pads and shoulder buttons. I think Hyperkin makes a USB version of the Genesis six-button pad, which probably feels good but is lacking shoulder buttons.

Hi /vr/.
Just finished Sonic 1 and 2 and just wondered which version of 3 I should play/play first?
On a forum somebody suggested a custom patched version but it didn't make a whole lot of sense unfortunately.

The best generation ever
Although, I never played any Saturn games, I'm sure it had its merits.
I prefer the N64 overall since I like 3D platformers, FPS, and action-adventure games. 4 player multiplayer was always a blast too.
The PS1 had some good stuff as well. It had more of the genres I'm not interested in (JRPGs, fighters, racing, etc.) but that's fine - People have genres they like. What little of the PS1's library I got to play I ended up enjoying (Spyro, Crash, Croc, classic GTA, etc.
I should pick up some PS1 games one of these days to play on my PS3.

Anyways, 5th gen was best gen because it was that "WOW" factor of coming from 2D and jumping to 3D that made it a monumental era of gaming. It was like a digital frontier, in a sense - So many games were treading new ground resulting in new experiences all around.

HOW did the saturn of ALL things manage to outsell the dreamcast? The dreamcast had E V E R Y T H I N G going for it

??????

what the fuck happened

Keep in mind that Saturn was Sega's most successful console ever in Japan, outselling even the PlayStation for most of its life. Japanese gamers and developers weren't too happy when Sega ended Saturn support to focus on Dreamcast.

Over here in Burgerland, Sega CD, 32X and Saturn were gigantic clusterfucks that destroyed consumer confidence in Sega. Dreamcast did have an incredible launch, but after that most people waited to see how the PS2 would do. It also didn't help that major third parties like EA refused to support Dreamcast after the disastrous Saturn era in the west.
>>
>>4162832

Sega of Japan and Sega of America disagreed on just about everything; the ensuing infighting more or less doomed the Dreamcast before the PS2 even launched.
>>
>>4162832
Because Segata Sanshiro was the key to Saturn's success in Japan. The closest thing we have to an American version of Segata Sanshiro is Chuck Norris, but I'm not sure how well the Saturn would have sold in America if Chuck Norris did a Segata Sanshiro-esque commercial.

Is the original FF still worth playing despite the bugs?
105 posts and 10 images submitted.
>>
Even ignoring bugs, it's still annoying to have the battle mechanic that if an enemy dies that you targeted, you'll whiff at the air it just occupied instead of just moving onto a different monster. For that reason alone I prefer to play FF Origins which fixes that.

4 is the oldest playable FF.

Games that are enjoyable just because of the music?

Sonic adventure is broken as fuck. It barely functions and yet it's fun to play. Any level with good music just becomes a cozy fuck around like a kid playing in the park. The random deaths, shitty homing attack or just running into a wall and losing all your speed don't matter. You're jamming, you're having fun and all it's flaws just fall away.

What other games have this same aspect to them? Poor gameplay but great music.
