This is a thread for discussing cheap Chinese crap from the likes of AliExpress and similar sites. Have you bought anything /vr/ related that you found interesting?

I bought this thing on a whim, and it's one of the more bizarre things I've purchased. It's basically a tiny famiclone with a built in 89-in-1 multicart. It's powered by a single AAA battery and honestly it's not terrible for the price. The big issue is the button layout, for some ungodly reason they put the B button directly above the A button, which was awkward to get used to. Also the analog-style joystick is difficult to use in 8 directions, and there's no select button. Nevertheless, the game selection is relatively decent (though there are a number of repeated games) and it's so compact that it's not a bad thing to take on vacation if you have a CRT to connect it to. If you're willing to pay more you could probably find better, though.

Also, it has a bizarre flashlight feature. If you unplug the TV cable and hold left on the joystick, a bright white LED shines on the left side. I have absolutely no idea why they thought it was necessary to include this, but that's China I suppose.

it's all cheap and you have buyer protection, and not all of it is memes. You can get legitimately useful retro and non-retro vidya shit on there, as well as almost anything else.
>>4170256 #
pretty bizarre, I haven't seen that one yet but I haven't been famiclone / multicart hunting as much since I bought my chinese EverDrive N8.

Thanks anon, listening for the first time but this sounds really great.

Sunsoft made really good music to their games.
Batman is great as well.

There is a growing trend of taking the old Coleco LCD tabletop games, gutting them, and customizing them to run the actual arcade roms. They are even going as far as to create custom cabinets and button layouts.

How do you feel about this?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I'd really like to get my hands on that Tempest cabinet. That one is really nice.

On topic, I follow the Facebook page for the guy who makes most of this stuff. I'm definitely in favor of it. Over the years I've found a ton of these units in really tough shape. If someone can recondition them and make something good out of it I'm all for it.
>>
>>4170073
mixed feelings
i was around when these came out, and obviously they are a disappointment when compared to the actual games, or console/home computer versions
but then the controls are real crappy, so i imagine even with emulation they are shitty
>>
>>4170073

Considering I've found one working and complete one out of about 20 different cabs I've come across while thrifting, going to pawn shops etc, probably a good use.

So many of these are little more than a scratched plastic shell and some corroded circuits now.

Like, fuck people who take a really good condition one and hack it up but I imagine that's a rarity.

Alright /vr/. I have a crazy idea. I want to take an old NES console and repair it. Then, I want to take a raspberry pi and run RetroPie on it and house it inside the console. Can I do this?

you won't get far, let alone complete it, because you are an retard
>>
>>4169726
How so? Just house it near the plastic and drill holes for ports or some shit

It's doable in theory, but why?

Not a Sega vs. Nintendo thing. I am genuinely curious what /vr/ thinks is a better take on the same character with his signature set of moves and the games' similar enemies, settings, and level gimmicks.
>>
I'll probably get flamed for this, but SNES Sparkster > RKA > Genesis Sparkster. I just like the gameplay, the levels, and the graphics more in the Super Nintendo game.

Masterpiece coming through.

Why did Nintendo shit the bed with later entries in the series? It's such a seemingly easy formula to not fuck up. Assault wasn't terrible and it had some great Arwing missions, but the game as a whole was sub-par compared to SF64. Command and Zero however are an absolute fucking joke.

Zero is amazing.
Assault was good but those on-foot missions weren't necessary.

Never played Command.
>>
>>4169614
>Zero is amazing.
It could have been amazing were it not the fucking atrocious forced gyro controls. I don't understand why they didn't just let you toggle them. It ruined the entire game for me. Other than that, it was pretty much SF64 copy pasted with HD textures and a few new vehicles.
>>
>>4169615
You're trolling, right?
Zero is bad, but the gyro controls were great.
Way too many open stages, really lacked those fun on-rail stages.
and the branching paths felt like bonus stages, rather than alternate paths. If that even makes sense, I might be explaining that one poorly.

What's funny is that Shinobi World wouldn't even cut it as a phone game today, while we genuinely enjoy it as one of the best Master System games.

>>4169463
Miracle World has bad controls and physics, and its reliance on janken to beat bosses is annoying. Shinobi World is an improvement in these areas.

Any of you anons had any experience emulating this on the PSP? I just started it and the framerate seems a bit sluggish, I dont know how it runs on an original PS1 but It doesnt feel right. I was playing the PSN eboot.

seems I could make an eboot myself but I see postings of people who had the game crash on them on the intro on when swapping discs, I dont know if I should just try emulating it on my PC but I would like to have the game portable without having to resort to my phone.

The psp has always had shit emulation.
>>
>>4169254

not for PS1 games really, so far I played Metal Gear, Spyro 1, Koudelka and Medievil, none of them presented any problems, right now I have Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Suikoden, Deception 2 and Chrono Cross is the only one that has this problem.
>>
>>4169254
>The psp has always had shit emulation.
PSP's CPU is literally a variant of the PS1 CPU, a slightly newer model of it to be precise.
It's not really emulation in the traditional sense.
And it's also extremely accurate because of that.

Can someone give me a quick rundown of the whole 60-pin/72-pin/3-screw/5-screw thing? I'm a FamiGuy not an NESman.
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Famicom uses 60 contact pins.
NES uses 72 contact pins.

Many of the first wave of NES titles have cartridges that uses 5 screws on the back, where as the 3-screw design became the standard quickly thereafter. Because early in the NES' life there was a slight shortage of NES boards, they used famicom boards instead and placed an adaptor right inside the cartridge.

I believe there's 18 titles that potentially used the 5-screw cartridges, and all of them have a chance - albeit a small one - to have an adaptor inside. Gyromite has the best chance of having one inside, but once again its not a guarantee. You can sometimes tell if a game has an adaptor inside by the slightly heavier weight to it.
>>
Famicom carts have 60 pounds, NES ones have 72. I could explain why. When the NES was first introduced, the launch games all had a distinctly similar black label. The earliest released ones are held together with 5 screws while later versions only have 3 like 99% of NES games. Of these 5 screw black label NES games, some examples of some titles are actually literally the Famicom game's pcb with an adapter made by Nintendo. These are generally considered the best Famicom to nes adapters. There are no Nintendo made adapters that do the opposite although there are tons of generic ones as they don't need to have a key chip (only front loading NESs have lock chips).

Maybe I'll post some pictures of both my adapters later if you want. Gotta take my kid to some animal show or something atm.

Say a game like Sonic Mania had actually come out for the Saturn back then and was called Sonic 4.

How differently would things have played out? Would it have stopped Sega's decline?

So what you're trying to ask is, what if Sega had done a traditional, side-scrolling Sonic 4 instead of falling for the 3D meme?

I'm not all that familiar with the Saturn, but isn't it a 2D powerhouse?
>>
>>4168527
it wouldn't make much of a splash
another 2d sonic when sony was rolling out those hot 3d polygons would make people roll their eyes like they did when they got a glorified port of 3d blast

People on /vr/ actually play video games unlike the faggots at /v/, right? Seriously why not attempt to beat one of those old games you never could despite trying this weekend?

Let's fucking do this and use this thread as a place to discuss our attempts and to give each other tips and encouragement.

Anyway I don't know about you guys but I am going to boot up Section Z on NES and give a go at finally beating it.
