Why did Sega of Japan and Sega of America hate each other so much?
Conflicting ideas.
If is wasn't for sega of America we would have gotten dreamcast 2

Better than Zelda.

Sure why not.

This is a good Zeldavania.
Why do you actively go out of your way to make retro games look worse? Retro games were made with consumer sets in mind. If you want the games to look like pixelated garbage, why not just use an emulator?
>>4161634
Do you know what PVMs and similar "professional video monitors" were originally built for? They were just the higher fidelity production-grade counterpart to consumer tv sets. TV and film studios used them to proof images for broadcast and distribution. Many video game developers of those days may have been too poor and unorganized to afford them, but if they could have they would've used them just like any other professional studio.
Cheap consumer products often suck. This whole line of reasoning is like saying "why do you listen to music on high-quality headphones when it was designed to be listened to over crappy AM radio?" Brian Wilson definitely wasn't listening to studio mixes over the same shitty radio receivers many consumers used in those days, for fuck's sake.
But unlike audio equipment, CRT monitors have come to be considered obsolete (professional TV production isn't interested in proofing images for standard definition CRT sets anymore!) in their primary application, so it is now affordable enough for hobbyists to buy them for personal use. If they had cost $200 in 1990 instead of $20000, lots of casual consumers and enthusiasts would've bought them and used them to play video games.
In any case, why do you think so many consoles have RGB signals right on their a/v ports? Shitty televisions that look like your last screenshot certainly don't handle those. If games were made only to be played on those displays, why did they output those signals?
>>4161634
Unfiltered sharp pixels looks far better than the other three to me. Nintendo agrees.
None of that matters though because all that's important for you is your personal preference.
>Shitty televisions that look like your last screenshot certainly don't handle [RGB]
not in burgerland, no, but in PAListan every at least mediocre TV supported RGB over scart
What have you found in the trash/thrift store /vr/? I was driving down the street and saw that someone dumped an old arcade cab into the trash. I immediately stopped and checked it out. The cab had been modified to hell and back to make room for a mame box but there were some salvageable parts.
I removed the coin door as seen here. It's a Williams door but I'm not sure what Williams game it was originally, the cab was fucked. Anyone have any idea?
The back
I also was able to pull this out of the cab as well. It's wired badly but I'm sure I can fix it.
>>4161431
Would loved to have found that just sitting in the trash wtf
>paying people $100 to solder in a few caps
I hope none of you do this
>>4159809
I suck at soldering, so at some point I'm gonna go get some cheap shit electronics at goodwill to try fucking and unfucking them.
I would probably prefer paying someone to fix my VB though, that soldering is just too precise, and not THAT expensive from my understanding.
>>4159847
soldering is a useful skill to have when your into retro electronic stuff. Just practice at some broken old junk
>>4159809
>I hope none of you do this
You know better than that. Neo /v/ is chock full of fools who pay a lot more than $100 to have some faggot replace every single cap on their console with cheap chink electrolytic shit. Many won't even buy something unless its been recapped. Not sure if that's worse than the fools who try it themselves using some shitty instructables guide and at best accomplish the same thing.
Rock2 was best map

There's something special about the Neo Geo Pocket Color. I don't even like fighting games and this is my favorite handhed ever.
>>4147239
I always really liked the clicky stick.
I had Card Fighters and I loved it and played the shit out of it.
I really for the life of me can't imagine why they chose to go with two buttons but they adapted their games to that just fine the same way they adapted all the other elements of them down to a smaller scale and the hardware design itself is solid as fuck.
Did this translation improve the game for you?
I don't know.
I FUCKING LOVE IT HERE
Alundra has been my favorite game since it came out. At age 5, I watched an older cousin play it. At 7 I got my own copy and began playing it, nowdays I speedrun both Eng and Jap versions. Being able to read the Japanese, I think Working Designs did an incredible job, and I wish more companies today handled translations like they did. They kept the important story elements, they did a good job with giving each character their own personality, even in little mannerisms. For example, Bonaire. The surfer talk fits his personality, and was one of the better options they could have done for him. Jess is a doting father figure, who takes pride in Alundra, but knows he has a job to do, and he deals with his own conflicts in Jess' own way.
Also, ronan is a cunt, and they did a good job of,portraying that in the translation, too.
Most of the time, threads for obscure arcade games on this board tend to center around the late 80s and 90s. This thread is for earlier games, before 1985.
Have you ever played Senjyo from Tehkan? It's an awesome single-screen shooting game where you control a tank and defend against approaching enemies. Rotating the turret around shows off an impressive parallax effect. You can shoot down flying saucers to increase a score multiplier, and have to dodge sideways to avoid enemy shots and kamikaze fighters that charge at you. Excellent pure shooting action.
>>4100824
That looks amazing. I'll have to try that out later.
bumping for potential
I've only played arcade games through MAME. Quantum was pretty enjoyable, I guess.
As some of us know, during the development off the Sega Saturn, Silicpne had demonstrated gaming tech to Sega in 1993. While the American branch liked the hardware, the japenese executives rejected it for nitpicking reasons (audio not good enough, chip too big etc.) the Saturn Project continued. The hardware was later adopted by Nintendo for their then next gen console, the Nintendo 64.
How would've things changed if the American branch had convinced their executives to use SGI tech.
>>4168489
It would've been an enormous benefit since there was nothing wrong with SGI's chipset in the end (although it did reputedly take until 1995/1996 to finish).
The issues with N64's hardware have more to do with the stuff surrounding SGI's chipset, like the bottlenecked single channel unified memory and the decision to go with cartridges. Had Sega not gone down this path, the SGI Saturn would've been a 3D powerhouse on the level of a Pentium equipped 3dfx Voodoo.
The only real question is whether Sega would have risked releasing it one year (or more) after the Playstation.
>>4168497
The Saturn honestly would have done much better if it had waited until 95-96. The PSX would have got a big foothold to begin with, sure, but maybe Sega would have had time to make a real Sonic game at launch if the launch was much later.
It would have still failed.
PlayStation.
Recently, I've been playing Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast for the first time.
The game gets so much praise on the internet, so I was really looking forward to it.
I am so completely disappointed. How can people love this game so much?
Two-thirds of the game is running around pathetically small, boring over-worlds,
talking to people and doing errands! That is the last thing I want in a Sonic game!
I realize it has "Adventure" in the name for a reason, but this is just ridiculous. On top of that, the animations are totally sub par, the music forgettable, and the mini-games are really lame, too.
I've run into several bugs already, one forcing me to restart.
I kept lying to myself that I just wasn't "getting the hang of it", but I can't lie anymore.
How did this game get a 9.2/10 on GameSpot??
For the fans of this game - what do you like about it so much?
>>4168149 (OP)
i bought sonic adventure december 1999. It was the fastest, most awesome 3D game. Simple as that. The boring over-world levels were a huge let down though. Even back then i thought it would have been such a better game if they would have kept it action levels only.
Same with SONIC 1 for mega drive, It was just incredible awesome to behold in 1991. They could have easily released Sonic 1 in the arcades and it still would have turned heads.
>>4168149
It hasn't aged well. It was one of the first playable 3D sonic games and it was pretty good considering that. But over the years it did not fare well so compared to other modern 3D games it sucks.
>>4168149
A lot of people were impressed by the visuals and the music but the gameplay has never been good.
It's still a visually attractive game but that's it
N64 really should have added an optional SNES+NES player. It would have extended the life of SNES games a bit, and encouraged people to buy an N64.
>>4167193
PS4 should be backwards compatible with PS2 and PSX out the box but Sony are complete fucking kikes that want to 'remaster' all their games and recharge for them on playstation store again.
I can understand why PS3 emulation is too complicated (cell chip bullshit) but for PSX and PS2 they have no excuse.
>>4167193
>encouraged people to buy an N64.
the N64 completely abandoning 2d games was a huge fuck you to people who loved the nes & snes.
