Hey /vr/, I've got an issue with my Samsung HDTV T27B300 when I am playing NTSC PS1 games.

Pic-related sums up the problem quite nicely, I have tried every resolution this TV offered me, unfortunately all of my games are cropped.

I live in Poormany, so my TV was obviously designed for the PAL video format.
I am using a 'real' SCART cable that allows me to play my NTSC games in color, but the same exact thing happens with the standard PS1 cables (just black and white).

Are there any components that will help me change my TV's resolution? I really don't mind the black bars, I just don't want the rest of my screen to be cut from the monitor.

My PSX model is SCPH-5552, if that's important.
>>
I figure there is nothing I can do about it, are there any good PAL TVs that can play NTSC PS1 games flawlessly?
>>
IIRC PlayStations aren't locked for video format, so once the region locking is bypassed it will always output a true PAL or NTSC signal depending on the game. The fact that you get B&W through non-scart suggests the TV doesn't support the NTSC carrier properly. RGB via scart is different again, but it's still causing problems. Even if it's not completely obvious at first, I'd bet that it's decimating that RGB input and dropping frames like mad.

Some TVs are just fucking terrible. They decide for some reason that since it's being sold in a primarily PAL country the firmware needs to be locked to support nothing else. In my experience Samsung is one of the worst brands for shit like this. Whenever someone has an issue like this it's usually fucking them.

I'd maybe try an upscaler or something before a new TV, but I wouldn't be too hopeful. I've had good luck with Hitachi, but honestly it's just luck. The wizards of this board would suggest a CRT.

Eh, I had an allowance - admittedly not that much, but after a few 2 or 3 months of saving up that could usually net me a new game.

Can someone pill me on the mana series? I fondly remember Secret of Mana and Evermore as a kid, and have not played a single game since. for some reason, the music popped into my head recently and i can't stop thinking about it. what the heck happened to this series?
45 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Also known in Japen as Seiken Densetsu, the first game was on the Game Boy and released in the states as Final Fantasy Adventure. Secret of Mana is SD2, and SD3 was not officially released, but there's plenty of fan translated ROMs out there.

Secret of Evermore, while is uses much of the same engine as SoM, is in fact it's own separate entity and has the prestige of being the first and last game developed by Square of America.

Legend of Mana for PS1 I don't believe is technically not a main, enumerated sequel of the Mana series, but rather a sort of side-project that has a different combat system and a generally non-linear story, but it's also a damn fine game in its own right.

After LoM, the thunder never struck again, and all Mana games after that are best avoided.
>>
Only played Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 and to be blunt, they're mediocre at best. Though if you liked Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3 is much better so there's that. There's also a PSX game, a GBA remake of the first game in the series (FF Adventure), and I think some phone games or some such.

A long time ago but I'm willing to bet it's still good based on all the other adventure games I've replayed from that period. Late '90s adventures like Discworld Noir, The Longest Journey, The Last Express and Tex Murphy Overseer. Good stuff.

So, I was on the fence of buying a PS4 and a new racing game but everything seems to be shit. Forza 7 is on a crap console, in Gran Turismo Sport the cars stand out like a sore thumb in the terrible looking environment, Project Cars has broken gamepad controls and everything Need For Speed is boring af.

No I am back playing Sega Rally Championship, Wipeout 2097 and Gran Turismo 2. Is it just me or have racing games peaked in the late 90s and are on a downward spiral ever since? Why do all racing games nowadays try to be overly complicated? Where have the arcade style racers gone?

>Forza 7 is on a crap console
It's on PC as well, lad. Same as Forza Horizon 3, which is an arcade racer.

People have invested more and more in making things look as realistic as possible. Which is good.
That leaves little room to stylize things. Which is bad.

Are these PS1/Saturn racing games any good and still worth playing?

Is MechWarrior 2: Mercs better played with a joystick?

You can simply use a gamepad as a joystick.
Dedicated joysticks are a 90's thing that died.
>>
>>4167656
I actually have a joystick (for Flight sims/Descent)
I just got it setup but the torso aiming doesn't feel right and I can't seem to find a way to change this.

whats the exact problem you're having?
i didn't have any issues using my joystick with the game.

Been playing PSX Doom. It's interesting. The 'music' is a little too ambient for my tastes but it still fits Doom pretty well. It's not as different as I thought it would be, though some of the changes are bizarre. It's still Doom, feels good man.

I want to take in the story line and skip as much game play as possible while still enjoying the game.

Does /vr/ have a good guide for this play style?

Also what ending should I choose?
I know the game has multiple endings but I've never finished the game.

>>
>>4167548
Just fight the battles as they come. CT is insanely well paced
>>
>>4167548
Multiple endings don't matter in the slightest until new game+, just play the game
>>
>>4167557
>>4167558
This really is all there is to it. The only game that has better pacing is Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, and that's because everything that happens drives the story along in some way, shape, or form.

That, and the sound track, are MQ's only real upsides, though.

But really, just play the game straight, and don't worry about the extra endings until you've gotten New Game+ going.

It was a "normal" absurdist Japanese game that took so long to make that the publishers got impatient and released a prototype.

Knowingly releasing an unfinished, buggy game as a finished product with obviously no potential for a patch is the height of absurdism, honestly.

What the fuck was he thinking? He was using that speech as a platform to tell game makers to get all in on Dreamcast because Sega was, too. But what purpose existed in publicly executing the Saturn in 1997, TWO YEARS before the Dreamcast was launched worldwide, a full year before the Japanese launch?
I suppose it would've been okay if Bernie hadn't pulled any and all marketing for Saturn but he did. Anything that came out after 1997 had zero ad presence. I get that on a system selling for huge losses, it was better to produce fewer of them, but still, why fully remove Sega from the games business for two years?

I don't know man, it pissed me off when new Saturn games stopped being produced. It forced me to buy a Playstation, just so I can play Resident Evil 2.
>>
Because people didn't like the Saturn (or at least I'm presuming, I was a young Nintendo fantard at the time so I wasn't aware of what people actually thought about it other than my "lol sega sux" attitude), and it looked "outdated" compared to the other consoles. So like with the Wii U the sharks were hungry for blood, SEGA probably thought they'd make a good first impression by being upfront about it. "Look, we know you don't like Saturn, but our NEW system is going to address all your complaints and be the most powerful console on the market!!!"

Come to think of it, SEGA were the first to fall for the "more powerful console = better sales" meme, weren't they? Or probably Nintendo with the N64.
