Never travelled internationally before and am pretty keen on visiting NY, either alone or with another mate - we're 23, Australian and male.
Hoping to go at the start of 2018; is January a good time for it?
Is it beneficial to dl tinder and set it to NYC so I can make some contacts for when I go over?

Will be grateful for any tips, stories or recommendations too!

Don't come to NYC in January. Come in the Summer. NYC in the summer is a dream. Festivals (music and food ones) outside movie screenings, you can travel into Long Island to the Hamptons etc etc don't come in the gloomy cold. You'll thank me later.

My friends and I will be heading Kiev for 5 days in a few months and we're all wandering what to do.

We've already decided on going on a Chernobyl tour but what things are there to do in the city itself?

What's the nightlife like? What museums are there? Any other general activities?

I've looked on Google but most of the results just come up with "every girl in Kiev is fat" and "everyone has AIDS in Kiev"

what would you do in your town for fun? same shit in kiev

Don't leave booking the Chernobyl tour at the last minute. They need a minimum of 2 weeks in advance for passport and entry reasons.

I went to Chernobyl in June, it's an awesome place. Luckily I went before the reactor got covered over but it will still be a great trip. How long are you going to be there for? I did 2 days which was a pretty comprehensive tour.

A friend and I are planning to travel to Turkey in May or June of this year. Probably for 10 to 14 days and will see several cities. The preliminary itinerary is Istanbul, Gallipoli/Çanakkale, Troy, Izmir, Ephesus, Antalya (maybe), and if time allows either Ankara or Black Sea coast.

Any suggestions on something I'm missing? Are Edirne or Bursa worth seeing? Tips for traveling within Turkey? I know a bit about the dolmus system but any first hand experiences would help.

Istanbul is outstanding. That mosque in the pic is at Ortaköy. Just a couple of hundred metres from where the new-years-eve attack took place. Nice area.

Go to Princes' Islands. You get a boat from somewhere close to Galata bridge or the stadium.

I have also been recommended, if one has the money, to rent a private boat and go around the Marmaris.

Anyway. Turkey is huge and full of sights and nice people. You could spend years there (or at least I could). Just Istanbul alone could take months to get tired from.

For 10 days, your root is ideal. If you have 2 more weeks, i would say you to add Kapadokya and Bursa.

I've noticed recently where I live that tourists usually travel with one local guy who gives them a general insight of where they are and stuff.
I don't think they're tour guides because they're pretty shitty at speaking English. Are they using a social networking app of sorts that hooks them up with people traveling here or something? I'm wondering because I bet I could do a helluva better job than them at it.

Maybe couchsurfing? Try writing to the people who publish that they'll visit your city. I posted about going to X country there and I got over fifty replies from different people.

My friend just got a job with delta and he added me as his +1, so i get 70% off flights. Because of that I'm going to go to as many places as I can this year. What are some places that I need to see, and what places to avoid/ are overrated?
I've been all over the US except NYC and Florida, so I'm mostly looking for places in Europe, or wherever delta goes.

Europe is overrated.

Go to South America, Asia, and Africa. You have to give us more info on what you're into though.
>>
>>1202799
I want to see the buildings in Europe mostly, and maybe meet some of the people. But i also love seeing natural wonders. We were planning on going to Thailand this spring. I'm really into outdoors stuff, so places with a lot of that might be best.
>>
>>1202785
Delta goes more places than any other airline.
The world is your oyster.

Bad news? Everyone flies delta. It's very hard to buddy pass your way as the companion of a bottom of seniority plebe. Sorry kiddo.

I had had buddy passes from grandparents who had 1943 seniority. It was pretty choice. Only current employees traveling for business got above me on the list. But, the list? It's long. Very long. You can standby in ATL along with 38 other standbys, for a total of 8 available seats. If there's first class, great, you'll get that last seat up there, if the 47 guys with business class upgrades and miles haven't asked for upgrade.

What is the joy of buddy passes? Well, it's open-ended. For someone who has a retiree rich person's lifestyle, that change fee is over. Feel like staying 2-3 more days, sure, you can do that. Issue your ticket again, and list yourself on a later flight. Feel like going to JFK and looking up at the monitors and deciding then an only then if you feel like Ireland, but dunno, maybe Czech Republic, and then just picking it then? It's awesome like that. I hope your significant other friend is in management or a pilot. If so marry them, and buy the stock too.

Hey /trv/ im currently in the Washington and planning a trip to France for two weeks. While there also planning a few stops in near by countries. England, Germany and a few others just because. Whats the best way to get around? Should I pay in cash for things or screw the exchange and use a card? Will I be okay taking the tube or train with a small carry on or just keep everything in a backpack? How to not look so obvious while traveling. Im new to traveling abroad by myself.

General tips for visiting France and England. Never really visited this page till recently. You guys seem like a very knowledgeable bunch!

Is no one replying cuz I used a stupid thread pic?
>>

Do you have any idea of an itinerary?
Where are you flying to?
What's your budget?

Bring your debit card, withdraw money from ATMs (make sure to let your bank know you're going overseas or else firewall happens and you can't use debit card). Then keep your card safe.

You'll be fine carrying shit in like a small daypack on the tube/train. If you feel suspicious or if it's crowded, throw it on one shoulder and keep your arm on the opening of your daypack to secure it.

It's fine to look "obvious" while traveling. You'll never blend in with the locals because when you start opening your mouth they will know you're not from there. if what you're asking is how you don't want to look like a target for people- learn to walk with purpose. As soon as you start looking lost and uncertain in yourself, that's when you get scammed, pickpocketed, robbed, etc (These are your worst case scenarios. I have never had this happen to me and the worst I've encountered fellow travelers is pickpockets) Europe is pretty well tame save for petty theft.

You have two weeks. Limit yourself to 2 countries at most, otherwise you will spend more time in transit than actually experiencing someplace.

I'm going to Kaliningrad to visit a friend that lives there, she is Russian. I am by ethnicity Persian but born and raised in Europe. I have dark hair and dark eyes but pretty light skin.
But I have read that Russians really hate dark haired middle eastern people so I'm kinda scared that a gang of Russians will kick the crap out of me, but then again I've never been in a fight and I don't stand out at all. Just wondering about some people that have been to Russia and the racism or dangers there. I am 22 by the way and I have traveled a lot in my free time. Japan, Spain, Finland, USA and many other countries but this is my first time to go to Russia. Can anyone give some of their own experiences and whether any of my worries are legitimate?

Thanks

I'll be in Fez for three and a half days in late February. In that brief time, is it worth a trip to Marrakech, or am I better off just spending all my time in Fez? I love train rides through the countryside but there's the obvious time constraint.

Also recommendations?
9 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I wouldn't do it. Marrakech is too far away for that amount of time. If you were there one week I would do it but not in just three days.

In my opinion Fez is interesting enough for the three days and a half. You'll get lost tons of times.

If you still want to do something different than Fez you could check a day trip to Chefchaouen. I went like in a mid morning bus slept there and went back to fez at like noon next day. I don't remember the exact timing but Chefchaouen is really cool.
>>
>>1202690
Marrakech isn't all that great. If I were you I'd go to Vollubilis, a ruined Roman city in a beautiful setting. It's only 70km from Fez. From there you can either visit the little village of Moulay Idriss, or go a little bit further south to Meknes.

Also please don't oversaturate your pictures like in the OP
>>
>>1202690
Fez can be cold as fuck during that time, and there are not that many hotels in the old town. Just one or two budget places, and the rest are riads with quite a high price-tag.

Fascinating place though.

Hello. I'm Brazilian, and I'm here to warn you.

Don't come to Brazil. I'll explain why.

1 - Everything is overpriced, especially for you.
A normal water bottle is R$2. In tourist points, like Rio de Janeiro, get ready to pay R$5. Most sellers, when they see you are a "gringo", the price will go to R$10.
This happens with everything you are going to buy.
You can avoid this happening with taxis, at least. Just use Uber.
2 - There is no security.
See that video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMdnMsUuaIA
This is Rio de Janeiro. It is very easy to steal, see? Especially for you, too. Gringos are very easy to steal. Very very easy. When someone see that you are gringo, get ready to be stolen.
Also, the police aren't gone to help you. See the movie Elite Squad (Tropa de Elite), what happens with the normal police is true: they aren't going to solve the crime, they just put in the statistics.
3 - Most people don't speak English.
Most people who speak it have a broken English, too. You'll find most English speakers in South and SP. If you are Japanese, you can find some people in SP too (especially Liberdade).
Don't thrust the "South is Germanic" meme, they don't speak German.

Need to go to Brazil? Get a Brazilian friend who will stay with you all time, or get ready to be lost, stole, or anything.
If you get a Brazilian friend, you'll have a good trip.
Also, Rio de Janeiro is not the best place in the country. It has beatiful places, but it have the worst security.

I literally just came back from Rio and never payed more than R$3 for water most places it's 2

I stayed in Rio near Lapa and it was fine you are just fear mongering, I went out at nigth and even spoke to the prostitutes(boa noite etc) nothing bad happened to me.

as long as you are street smart and don't act like a retard you'll be fine

people seemed more scared of me stealing from them as i'm a skinny mulatto guy probably looks like the typical criminal guy

No one speaks english which makes it better if you want to learn Portuguese

People are pretty nice actually

I heard gun shots but it's not that different from where i live in the us i hear gun shots weekly

I didn't even want to go to Rio i just ended up there due to flight prices but i liked it i will probably go back for a couple of days then go to other cities i actually wanted to visit.

Brazil is a cool country and lots of really attractive women especially compared tot he US

I'm in Switzerland but I only know Zurich really. Lived here 4ish years. Don't spend more than 2 days in the city, especially if all you have is 6 days for the whole country.

If you come to Zurich then you've got these various locations to consider (just google to find the actual area):
>niederdorf
the old town where you find cobblestone streets and the buildings are all usually 300+/- years old, lots of good restaurants but all a little more expensive than normal
>langstrasse
whores, bars of various calibre some of which being really cool, strippers, can buy drugs here if that's your thing
>hardbrücke
club area. Be prepared for overpriced everything but its where it's cool to go to
>bahnhofstrasse
shopping, ranging from the biggest grocery stores to the most expensive name brands items. Flea market near the lake end on Saturday afternoons
>Bellevue
cinema, lakeside restaurants, some shopping, just a generally aesthetic place.
>>
>>1202677
Don't stay in Zurich. Stay in Bern- more interesting city for 2 days. And not as expensive as Zurich.

You're prolly staying in Zermatt if you're going to see the Matterhorn. Might be too much snow and shitty weather but ask your receptionist. That town is made for Matterhorn tourists

Hey guys.
I'm living in Hamburg, Germany right now and I want to leave.
I have about 3000€ right now and I was wondering how far I could go with that much money.
I want to go as far as possible because if I stay here any longer I think I'm going to end myself.
I still have a job but I wanted to call tomorrow and tell them that I quit.
But I know that you have to tell them two weeks prior that you quit, that's what it says in the contract.
I was wondering if I leave tonight if they could pursue me legally.

I also only have my ID card but no passport.
How far can I go without one and could I make a passport on the way if I need one.
I don't want to stay in Germany.
For starters I would but I really want to leave Hamburg at the very latest tomorrow.
I want to leave home now, though.

The last few days I was just sleeping through the day.
I can't stand my life, my job even my family.
I acted like a dick to my friends the last few days because I just can't help it and I don't want them to have me around any longer.
I just want to leave.

Can you guys give me some advice?

That might be. But it's not really up to debate right now.
>>
Start smoking weed in the evenings. You sound quite uptight, even for german standards. Travelling isn't a cure all so that's why I suggest some medication of sorts. If you are really on the cusp of suicide and think the only option is escape via travel then your money will go furthest in the East. You could easily live 4-6 months in Serbia with that money. Volunteer at the refugee center provide some purpose.

I'm an Irish guy looking to travel to America for about 2 weeks. Probably alone.

Thing is, I have no fucking idea where to go or what to do. I'm not really interested in overly touristy stuff like fucking Disney World or a hot beach holiday or anything like that. I wouldn't mind just going over and walking around town, getting drunk and making friends with the locals without getting mugged. I just dunno where would be a good place to do that. Also anywhere an average Irish guy can get laid is a plus. Any recommendations?

Doing the whole 'backpacking through Eastern Europe thing", in the process of getting travel funds together and I'm a little over halfway to goal with the plan on getting on the plane in July.

What would you say is the best language to learn for Eastern Europe? I feel like it'd be a better to get as strong a grasp on one language than it would be to try to learn a little bit of several different languages and probably just get confused.

I'm thinking Russian, but wonder if something else such as Ukrainian, Czech, or Polish would be better. From experience do you know if there is any language that is at least partially understood through most of Eastern Europe.

Also, how do I avoid being killed by Russian thugs?

English :-)
All national languages can get you in trouble in another country: for example russian in ukraine, croatian in serbia and so on. Simillar languages, but subtile differences can bring you trouble.
Lots of people under 40 will speek at least some English especially in bigger cities.
It might be a good idea to learn some basic frases of serbian/bosnian/croatian/montenegro - basicly te same language in order to understand the locals but avoid speeking.
Forget Hungarian it is different then language in all countries around.
If you want to choose one language, chose the language in the country you want to spend most of your time.

Russian is the way to go. If you understand Russian, you'll be able to read posters/ads in Poland, you'll be able to converse in Belarus, Ukraine, Baltics, Moldova. You'll be able to get the gist of most things in all Slavic countries.
