Archived threads in /tg/ - Traditional Games - 535. page

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Some of you might remember this from a couple of weeks ago. I made this workbook to help planning campaigns, worldbuilding, that sort of thing. It's still sort of a WIP but I added a lot and worked on my form-fillable skills (though the tab order is still... weird..)

Anyway, here it is.

Basically the idea is you fill out each page as many times as needed. Not everything is necessary for every world/character/game but I tried to make it versatile.

If you see anything that needs to be fixed, let me know. I'll sort out the forms a little better on the next pass but they're good enough for now. And if you can think of anything to add just post it.

OH and one of the last pages is like... questions to ask a player- if you have any suggestions for that I'd appreciate it. It's sort of a placeholder for now with whatever I came up with in the moment. I'd also be down with adding some pages that just give general campaign starting advice, and maybe a few things you could run through with your players.

Are there any useful resources for random character generation?
Stuff like background information, small perks and drawbacks, etc.

Do you use anything?

Stars Without Number has a nice system for generating quick NPCs.

The party wants to get friendly with a local starship mechanic? You pick up a standard set of polyhedral dice and roll them. They're talking to a tall young man with terrible taste in clothing who owes loan sharks and does his job because it's the family tradition.

I'm looking to run a serious highfantasy campaign building on PC stories, probably with worldbuilding while we play. I come from a super rules heavy system, want to run something a bit lighter, but not all the way to dungeon world.

I want something with visceral power progression, but not DnD.

13th Age is apparently pretty good for feeling powerful about levelling up, and it has pseudo world-building built into character creation. Each character has a relationship of some sort with one of 13 Icons of the world, and these are things like high druids, the last of the dragons, the Emperor, arch-mage or the guy prophesied to summon Satan into the world. But beyond them, there's not really ane stablished world beyond vague concepts and Icon relationships.

There's a screencap I've been trying to find for a while now and I was wondering if you guys might be able to help me out.

It was about a reoccurring villain who was just a bored Lich that did really petty, stupid shit for entertainment.

In the screencap, it goes onto how he basically filled an entire village with thousands of exploding tree frogs and the players spent an hour rolling to walk to the inn.

Bonus points if anyone can point me to the thread it was from, because I'd really like to see if there was more too it than shown.

In return, I present you with my favourite SS13 screencap. If you lean back and squint, it's a shiny.

Also I know exactly what cap you're talking about but I dunno if I have it, I'll look later.

Mix them with sirens or make them tragic figures.

Let's say your a nercomaner but the standard random villagers that stray into your path aren't cutting it as skeletons.

Would it be possible to make more durable forms out of iron and steel? In which case what would that be called?

Those would be called golems.

If you're a necromancer, thematic strength probably comes from older/more famous/more hateful corpses instead of random village mother #4.

If you are just making dudes out of raw materials, and not reanimating corpses, than your making constructs, which in D&D terms in conjuration, or maybe artifice.

What is your opinion on Legacy board games?

On one hand having a game that changes on a fundamental level between sessions based on the last session is a really neat concept.

On the other the way most go about it with boards and such that cannot be reset to their original form is blatant money gouging.

Would you like them better if they included removable stickers and dry erase style player boards or something along those lines so you could reset the same box over and over again?

Or is the whole Legacy aspect a gimmick to make a kind of shit game seem more interesting (like Pandemic and Risk, which are objectively shit games)?

You know, it's never worked out in play for me. I've bought several of the new board and card games, played them once, and sealed them back up again. I think it's wannabe designers without the resources to make a mmo trying to live out their dream on cardboard. Last decent card games I played were Munchkin and Chez Geek, and I'm even kind of burnt out on those.
>>
The main problem with it is that the Legacy aspect eventually ends. You'll run out of blank cards, you'll run out of room on the board, whatever. At that point there's not a whole lot of reason to play it in favor of a normal board game.

Gloomhaven is some of the most fun I've had playing board games. We've been playing periodically over months, still have tons of content untouched, and it has a removable stickers option.

I like when tournament winners get unique prizes.

Warhammer does a good job of this with their distinct demon statue. Other companies should take note.

A new Attempt Edition

Welcome to the thread that will hopefully give more life to Stormbringer, HeroQuest, Mythras, RuneQuest, CoC, and all those other systems that seem to die on their own.

A while back some fuck named Wayne said he was going to create a trove for this thread, but he turned out to be a lazy shitposter, so here's my attempt:
https://pastebin.com/AwhJmxLb

>Thread Question
What does everyone think of Chaosium's Quickstart rules for the new Runequest? Personally, I feel that the game won't be as good as Mythras in terms of being a Generic Fantasy RPG, however it could and should be a better Glorantha system.

Feel free to suggest expansions and tools for the trove that I can add to them. Hopefully with a Pastebin trove we can actually make this thread work as a regular event for once.

>Personally, I feel that the game won't be as good as Mythras in terms of being a Generic Fantasy RPG, however it could and should be a better Glorantha system.
It should be. But Mythras is arguably a more robust take on the mechanics, and can be tailored to Glorantha as easily as an inferior set of mechanics.

Oh, most definitely. The M-Space supplement makes it especially diverse, since it gives us Psionics, Technology, Space Travel, and balanced Energy Weapons. I mean, without too much trouble I can easily throw together a Spelljammer ruleset that feels Cohesive and manageable.

Source of the manga ?
Also,
Magical nails that you plant in your body and gives you a bonus/antidote at the right time.

Like anti-solidification against medusa.

The needle in itself is a multiuse but don't give it to other people (otherwise you'll transmit bad disease, Cancer of sida for exemple.)

So having recently tortured myself with this terrible anime, I realised that the saddest part for me was that it had such a cool concept. My answer for this was to put together a functional system to run a SAO campaign. Of course by "put together" I mean steal from other systems. I figure that the CoC skill system would work very well as it allows for creation of a skill and a fair way to improve them organically, but what's got me stuck is the combat. SAO has rather fast paced combat, and the CoC combat system is pretty slow and methodical.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what kind of combat system would fit in well here? Any other ideas for the core concept would be nice too.

>>
>>54425120
Use Strike for the combat system.

It's gamist as shit, which should fit an MMO-inspired game. If you want to keep using the d100 (from CoC), you can calculate the probabilities and convert I guess.

MTG Question

So I have a genuine question about this card. I read the rulings but I must have misunderstood. Would someone who plays Spell Queller be able to exile a spell they played in there graveyard?

i.e. a sorcery or instant that the player has already used. To recast and reuse? Or would Spell Queller only effect permanents on the battlefeild under players control?

I'm curious because if so, I think I found a nifty use of recasting.

>>
It target's a spell that's being cast (ie. on the stack).

I can target something with flashback or aftermath (assuming it meets the CMC criteria) if it's being cast from the yard, but it can't just target cards in the yard that have already resolved.
>>
>>54425054
You target spells on the stack with Spell Queller.

So to answer your question, yes. When you cast a spell from the graveyard it goes on the stack and resolves (and then usually exiles itself). If you target a spell cast from the graveyard you're basically adding a bunch of mana to mana costs in order to increase a spell's uses from 2 to 3 times.
>>
>>54425054
You cannot target an instant or sorcery card in any player's graveyard, no.

A card is only a spell as it's being cast. In any other zone, it's not a legal target.
