Anybody got any good tips or tutorials for someone who's just starting to play D&D? I'm trying to get into the game but it's a little daunting for someone who's never opened the box

the starter set is one of the best intros to D&D since Moldvay Basic in the early 80s.
Venomfang is a potential party wipeso don't feel bad if you fudge the dice rolls

Read the rulebook. If you're a player, at least be sure you know the rules for stuff that your character has and is capable. If you're a DM, become familiar with the *entire* book, or at the very least the fundamentals of how the system works so you can make appropriate rulings.
Don't sweat the small stuff. Tabletops are supposed to be fun and you will get better over time.
If you're DMing something like the starter set, read it all the way through and take notes. The 5e starter set isn't hard to run but it's also not very long, so read it through and be familiar with it.
If you're DMing in a premade setting, grab the general overview books (from older editions, usually) and give them a read over. Get familiar with the basics but don't sweat the small details.
If you're DMing a homebrew campaign, always start small. Focus on a town, a few NPCs, and a villain or two with particular goals. Spread out the worldbuilding and storytelling from there.
GM with 14 years experience here. (14 of GMing, more of playing).
Don't use D&D. Use Dungeon World system, but use it in your own setting. Just steal the core of the rules.
It's 2d6+appropriate mod, 6- = fail with consequences 7-9 = success but with consequences, 10+ = pure success.
Only players roll.
It is one of THE greatest systems I have ever played. The entire dw book is like a manual on how to be a great gm. The only bad advice I found in there was to split up your players as a 'move' you can make. That's always a terrible idea, unless its VERY temporary, like split them up but in the same room, to solve a trap puzzle.
Other than that, no warnings
The system is built to make amazing narrative with very even pacing and lots of interaction.
Let your players make up as much or as little as you like while still having as much control as GM as you want - but if you're stuck for an idea or etc. you can actually ask a player 'what is here?' or 'why is that?' and have what they say become reality.
I know what I'm saying isn't going to make complete sense without having read the rule book but trust me - its worth your time.
The rule book reads pretty bland and unappealing, that's VERY deceptive. I wasn't impressed by the actual book itself -- until I actually TRIED the system.
Blew me away.

Armada is typical half-written FFG nonsense. X-Wing works because they were writing the third or fourth version of those rules (Wings of War, etc), but Armada was from scratch, and it shows.
Is there some kind of guide for GM-ing? I don't just mean the active gaming portion, but also the preparation aspects?
Most good GM's Guides for modern systems will include that kind of information alongside the rules stuff.
Experience is the best teacher for things like this.
>>54432682
Unfortunately the system I'm using is homebrewed, and doesn't come with a guide.
>>54432785
I don't doubt that experience would make you better, but there's got to be some sort of preliminary guide for starting out.
This is battle magic, I ain't gotta' explain shit edition.

Stat Him
Ridiculous high Constitution and really low wis. He does a whole lotta dumb shit and I don't know how he survives it.
>>54432528
>>54432498
what class would he be?
>>54432831
classless; treat him as a monster that gains exp and levels.
Is Bingo a traditional game?
>>54432466
perhaps
>>54432466
Technically it's gambling since no skill is required and you depend on luck. So while it might be tg it's not really suited for /tg/.
>>54432466
bingo is utter shit because it is used to strawman opinions one finds abhorrent.
So very /tg/ related.
Why would you genetically engineer somebody to have male pattern baldness?
Likely because it's a side effect of all the other things you've done to them. One you can't be bothered fixing.
>>54432259
Maybe the emperor wasn't so smart after all
>>54432318
He was smart enough to know that hair loss isn't worth preventing on a living weapon.
The Mage's Guild holds a biannual festival to celebrate a sort of convention between its members where they meet and discuss wizardly matters at their magical guild hall which relocates every solstice.
The town lucky enough to be graced by its presence enjoys a wonderful festival of fireworks and tacky magical gimmicks and performances, to the delight of children and peasants, but often leaving the rest feeling underwhelmed and disillusioned. The Wizards claim to be showing off the fantastic potential of the arcane, which begs the question: What good are they really for? Is magic something to be taken seriously at all?
The truth is that the Wizards design these shows to be cheesy and underwhelming to dispel any suspicions of their true power, which in truth is so immense and its potential so problematic that all the peoples' admiration would ferment into fear and hate.
So tell me /tg/, what are some of the things that should show up at the festival to show that magic is fun and nonthreatening?
Mage Hand Puppets?
Prestidigitation Pastries?
Instant Portraits?
Light Shows?
Illusion Mirrors?
>>54432241
There's always at least one "Monster escape"
Whole sections of the town have to be cordoned off for the populace's safety as wizards deal with it.
The fearsome beast is usually a 10" tall fire breathing chicken chimera.
Hi /tg/ I'm currently making a saucerer for a campaign I'm going to be playing in soon. Does anyone know any fun spoofs of spells that are food related? Stuff like power word grill or something like that.

Magic Missile is now Magic Mustard

You can check this out if you weren't aware of it already. The pastamancer page might be helpful as well.

Redemptor redeemed?
That's pretty neato
>>54430318
It looks so much better without the belly armor. The protruding belly casing messed up the whole model. What looked like unfitting LEGO shoulders and too wide legs actually look fine without that dumb belly.
>>54430318
I wonder how it'd look with the top armor closed, but the stupid pot belly left off entirely. Because holy fuck, both open already looks aces.
Riddle time /tg/,
How have you incorperated puzzles and other logic traps into your campaign?
I had an encounter with a high level psion who was driven insane by the BBEG (Who was just a major asshole) because he was asked a question he could not answer and would destroy anyone who could not help him
That question?
“Have you really been so far even as decided to yse even go want to do look more like?”
They had to reroll because they took 3 rounds trying to figure out how to respond.
Sounds dumb, which is 100% fine for a nonserious game.
Only riddles I do are hints at the plotline and things to come. There is nothing worse than when a DM tries to make a legend of zelda dungeon full of badly designed, wholly mandatory and logically inconsistent puzzles.
>Level 5 Death was cast on your campaign
>everything who's level is a multiple of 5 is killed, i.e 5 15 20 ect.
>what changes?Obviously nothing happens if the system you're using doesn't use levels.
>every PC is starting at level 5
Time to roll new characters.
How might adventuring parties tackle the underwater-dungeon of the dreaded Aqua-Lich?
Keep in mind that certain areas deep in the dungeon are rumored to be surrounded by anti-magic fields.
Nuclear bombs.
>>54429001
>Aqua-Lich
So the arch-nemesis of a Dry Lich who instead of using Sand, uses water and worshipers umberlee, hiding it's phylactery with sunken treasures and Death sea caves full of high level loot
>>54429001
massive rock over the entrance and trap him inside, sorted.
How do you handle ruins of great temples or castles and what kind of dangerous things take rest inside said places?
Would it be a good place forMIMICS?!
>>54428040
Depends on how delapidated it is. You could have an out of date map to base shit on but need to back track because of collapsed hallways and actively having the PCs break a clear cut path.
Another could be a sole occupant that booby trap direct routes and generally creeps the out by watching from secret locations.
There could be keys hidden around so it turns into metriod, the nerdowells having said keys and having to fight them in their domains
Stat me.
