Greetings /diy/ masters
I'm putting together a soldering station and was hoping to do a little more custom work than a normal "helping hands" model.
The design I'm going for involves more arms, the only problem I'm facing is, where do I get more of the ball joints from? I can't seem to find them anywhere, and I really don't want to purchase a single kit every time just to get a couple joints
If there really is no place to buy them then I suppose I can machine them but that will take much longer
Anyone know where one can obtain these joints?
Those joints are shitty anyway, you can probably come up with a better design.

I made one of these. You can get the parts on Amazon. It's super simple and works great.

Just got an Xperia Z3 for dirt cheap And I'd love the waterproofing. Only problem is the flap cover for the charging port is snapped off, and the cable part is still in there without a way to grab it. How would I remove this
take the phone apart
>>1128721
It's one of those that you need to heat up to remove the back from. I've done a lot of disassembly, but nothing like that. Is it insanely difficult, and/or would doing so lessen the waterproofing
>>1128720
Own one of these guys and had to replace the screen, it is a cunt of a job and you will need replacement stickers. Honestly get the dock and glue the hole closed.
If you do to it, take your time, and try not to remove the screen only the back
These cunty little seeds are starting to iritate me. I've tried soaking the cotton, but the seeds don't float or sink out. I've tried shaking them out and I tried picking them out manually, but to no avail.
I made a really crappy cotton gin, but the seeds stay in the cottonous material and don't get processed out.
What do I do? I'm not taking them out by hand.
>>1128564
get niggers to do it for you
>>1128564
Make a less crappy cotton gin
>>1128566
How bad is it?
Howdy, /diy/. I lost the drain plug for my Rtic 65. They are currently sold out of replacement plugs.
The drain plug looks like it would accept the male version of a garden hose. I cannot find any specs on the size of the drain. Does anyone know the size, or any way I can plug the hole with a large screw?
Thanks in advance.

Color = cooler
>>1128305
use a rubber stopper, you imbecile.
>>1128305
How strong is it?
Use test plug, cork, or such secured
or use washers and gaskets like toilet tank bolts
Try screwing a garden hose into it. If it works go get female to female garden hose coupler then a cap, use that from the inside?
I need to do some fence repair in my yard.
The tree is consuming the fence. It has grown a lot in the past five years.
Its a very mature tree. 40+ years.
Roots and limbs are huge obstacles in the way of the current fence line.
Maintaining the health of the tree is top priority.
What would you guys do?
>>1128294
Branches hang into the upper line of the fence. Posts have been cut but are now being eaten.
>>1128296
Huge roots grow well above the lower line.
>>1128297
Fence is constructed with galvanized posts, Simpson strong ties and 2x4s.
Hi /diy/
I got my old piano back and have lost the key
Is there a way to open this without breaking the piano?
Lock is very old. Late to 1800s early 1900s
Are piano locks unique or can any key of that same piano work? If they're universal, then see if there are any on Ebay.
Otherwise just look up a lock picking tutorial
I'd call a key smith and ask what it would cost to have one made, since you're probably gonna want to lock it up when not playing it.
>>1128684
Give it back Ludwig.
>>1128695
It looks like an old warded lock, but I'm not really knowledgeable on the older locks. Warded locks are pretty difficult to pick with conventional tools.
What does /diy/ think of this old house? Favorite cast member? Did they teach you a lot?
>>1128300
They're fine chaps, pretty boring if you have no interest of carpentry.
>>1128300
all the decor and style garbage is ruining the show
>yeah, lets waste 10 minutes talking about how these two shades of paint are slightly different
and adding a chick when roger has the garden stuff covered is just pointless
I enjoy watching them. No favorites but I wish they would show off more down to earth/affordable Tech sometimes. I remember them installing an air bladder controlled hvac damper system. I'd still love to afford one of them.
So if any of you are still following Wranglerstar, you'd know hes making a workbench for his new shop, and i was wondering if any of you know a similar build with actual dimensions because he never mentions any, he makes it over like 5 videos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaaCH3Zeo7U&t=1080s
He made 20 videos for a tiny axe build, I bet a workbench will be over 9000 videos
You can find all the workbench plans you want just googling it, you don't have to follow that cuck. I used to follow Wranglerstar but he's gone to shit
>>1128405
>I used to follow Wranglerstar but he's gone to shit.
Explain
t. haven't watched him for long
>>1128437
Nothing to explain, and irrelevant to your request.
google it fgt.
engineering noob here
What does -.012 mean
.278-.012
does that mean:
max.278
min .266
>>1128156
i have no idea, but here's a shot: machining tolerances?
>>1128156
Those are poorly done tolerances. On the rim, for example, what it means is +.000 -.012 inches.
It's saying it can't be oversized at all, but can be twelve thousands under sized.
t. mechanical engineer
>>1128156
dont play with guns if you cant engineer them, your going to hurt yourself
>instructions say to wear gloves
>internet people say to wear gloves
>I didn't wear gloves
this stuff dries like superglue if you get it on your hands...wearing gloves is a good idea
>>1128320
and just hope to god you aren't sensitized to isocyanate, otherwise next time you use it you will be heading to the hospital.
Jesus fucking Christ I know what you mean. I was working with the stuff for a design project and fucked with it the whole time (cause of how fun it was to touch/I'm not the most accurate man) when it dried- holy. Fucking. Shit. Lost a couple years worth of calluses.
Tldr: Wear gloves or lose that thick skin perk.
>>1128341
You could just leave the schmoo on for a couple days
Also: You are like little babies. This stuff is great. Sticks to everything. Never comes out of clothes. Ever. Or leather gloves. Or anything. Will explode on a hot day if you forgot about it and left it in the sun.
Will explode if you have a mustache.
Not sure if this is a /g/ question or not, but I figured you guys would have experience with this.
I need a good pair of headphones for working in the warehouse, as I'm usually by myself while others are out in the field.
I do a lot of hydraulic related stuff, cutting, drill press, crimping, etc. so I'd prefer if they didn't dangle. Bluetooth is okay but I don't wanna drop too much money on these. Looking at $40-$50USD max.
I love sound so the best sound quality possible is preferable (obviously). These $7 gas station headphones just aren't cutting it.
Having a little control box, (or whatever they're called--where you can pause/play and change the volume) would be a plus.
A style like pic related is okay because they can double as ear plugs when using loud tools.
>>1127594
Just get a decent pair of SkullCandy earbuds, and use cable ties to bundle the cable to a custom lngth to prevent dangle. And run the cable under your shirt
>>1127594
After thrashing every pair of headphones I have ever had I go with skill candy.
They are cheap enough that you won't be crushed when you break them.
Anyone have any document or video or anything about how to train your eyes to read more with just one look (not that stupid technique about moving eyes faster), and the technique about changing the inner voice for images and concepts? I really need this, please.
>>1128227
there is no trick or technique, if you are familiar with a topic, you can glance a document in 2 seconds and get the gist of it just from looking
>>1128245
I already read 2 or 3 books per week but I need to be faster. I know already the softwares but you have to pay for it. Please if your answer is like THIS one, avoid answering.
>>1128255
no software will make you read faster, it is how fast your brain is understanding the text, not how fast you can make your eye see the text

One really big gear
One really small gear
Another small gear coaxial with the big gear
An electric motor or hand crank on the small gear
One of those weird electronic gizmos that measure rotation on the small gear
Essentially a drill press with almost arbitrarily high tolerances for depth (just get a bigger gear)
What does /diy/ think?
>>1128160
a thread
some words

no explanation
essentially one of those
fuck you op
>>1128163
If i wasn't clear enough:
There are gears A, B, C, and D.
Gear D is actually linear, so it will move up and down
Gear A is attached to a hand crank, as well as an electronic thing that record the amount that gear A rotated (idk what they're called)
Gear B is very large, is tangentially connected to gear A, and coaxially connected to gear C
Gear D is tangentially connected to gear C, and also harbors a drill bit.
By cranking the hand crank on gear A, you will gradually move the drill up and down. The degree of rotation of gear A will be recorded by the electronic piece, and can be used to calculate the lateral movement of the drill bit.
Hence, a CNC drill press that shouldn't cost thousands of dollars.

It's not cyclical, sorry
Does anyone know how to create detailed miniatures? I'm looking to build and entire city for a film and I don't know what methods or materials to use. Google is yielding some various results but nothing is very clear. This photo is the way the city would look.
>>1128159
I used to paint little pewter D&D figures.
A stationary magnification glass with a light will help with detail. You can shave down paint brushes with a razor blade
Do you have to build the entire city? You could use CGI for the wide shots then a few miniatures for the close ups with more CGI buildings in the backgrounds if you planned your angles well in advance.
>>1128159 several models would be best for film.
Imagine it as a whole world but also devided into places contained within.
Some things will not need nearly as much detail as others
Start with a rough model of your world this will serve for zoom in shots.
Add only a little detail at first focus on key areas.
Highly detailed aspects of your town will need to be built individually for example. The church in the town square could be built in a larger scale therefore making the detail work more possible
Hope this made and since.
How can i make my own lenses?
I plan to work with window's glass as my calculations are based upon glass' index of refraction, Should i make a mold first?
In case this is too complex or something, who can i pay to make this for me?
>>1128016
Is there any reason you can't cut acrylic lenses on a lathe instead?
>>1128016
Glass lenses are ground. They are made by people who make $10/hr around here.
