Right so my gram is in the middle of nowhere and wants to have some form of TV but the thing is shes retired and cant afford cable.I'd like to do something nice for her and get her set up with some free-ish TV. Right now the best option off the top of my head is a Roku but I will need an antenna because of just how far away she is(Can't get alot of stations without it). What sort of antenna should I get and is there a better alternative for free TV thats legal? Internets too complicated for her so thats out of the picture but if I could setup something that she can use without maintenance I'm all ears, I don't live close by so it would be hard to troubleshoot any problems she comes across. All help is appreciated.

Don't be such a cheap asshole and get her a pirate Direct TV with all the porn channels unblocked.

I can hook you up if you want to.
>>
>>1127266
Get a TV antenna. You will want to see what channels she is capable of getting. Check out antennaweb.org . You will also want to make sure you get a roof top or pole mounted antenna. Unless shes really close to some transmitters set-top ones are usually sucky.

The map on antenna web will show you were the stations are. If they are all in one direction, a directional antenna will get you farther range. If they are all over an omni-directional antenna will get you more stations.

Why would they just turn on from having the power plugged in? Does your monitor just turn on when you plug the power in? No, you have to press a power button that sends some kind of logic signal to the PSU board.
>>
it's functional. I know I need to turn it on, any idea how? Do I ground the green wire like a computer PSU? Im relatively new to electronic circuitry.
And yes, im bring very careful not to touch anything.

I actually really want to.
This is my dream. Well, a part of it.

hey /diy/

i need some suggestions for a hardhat compatible headlamp. One with decent runtime that will shine in my working area, not way out in front like a car headlight..

When i hired in a few weeks ago they gave me a setup similar to pic related. A basic lid and a cheap ass coast headlamp. The bill of the hardhat keeps the light from being useful to me. Also the light needs batteries about every three hours. After seeing a few guys onsite with their hard hats on backwards i tried it too. The headlight was instantly more useful, but when the sun is up i miss having the bill of the hat. I see other guys with full brim hardhats, but they don't have headlamps. I asked around at work and lots of guys have different setups, some just make do with the cheap stuff, some have flashlights on a rubber strap, some have mining lights. I've googled a bunch, and tried finding better headlamps but i'm reluctant to spend $75+ on a headlamp if its not going to work out. I guess the problem for me is that the headlamps are all intended for walking around, not for shining light down where my hands are when I'm working.

Can anybody with experience point me in the right direction here?

I got this two pack thing from costco a while back when I needed something for work but the job wasn't on going. However they seemed find for the task considering the small cost but otherwise no.

Beyond spending on a petzl type thing or something like a miners set up which is big bucks you're stuck with the same shit if you're not willing to spend.

Is auxillary portable lighting not an option? I bought a LED work light that matches my preferred power tool brand batteries and I much prefer it to the old moron lamp. Infact if you look at Milfuckyee they have some pretty impressive work lighting.
>>
>>1130506
Try Nightstick by Bayco, they have assorted hard hat headlamps with beam and tilt adjust. I use mine both helmeted and bareheaded, and the tilt makes a shitton of difference. Prices are reasonable, too. Can't help you on battery life, though, at best 4 hours continuous.

Also, maybe some sort of chest lamp might help? A couple of flat lamps just under the collarbones might give you the light you need.

Hey /diy/,

I'm a few years later than most but I'm heading for university to study Computer-Aided Engineering.
I've been out of education for a while, any suggestions on topics to brush up on / skills to learn / books to read?

Starting in September but I want to be prepared so I don't fall behind all the kids who're fresh out of college. (UK Education system)
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I'd say brush up on A level maths and physics or whatever they have over there. The rest should be very straight forward because it'll be new to all the other kids too.
>>
In the first year they shoved calculus and linear algebra down my throat so it won't be a bad idea to refresh those topics
>>
what the hell is computer aided engineering? isn't all engineering done on a computer now?

Anyway, know calculus and review physics. Wouldn't be bad to learn some elementary Matlab skills and other programming languages, C is the most applicable to lots of stuff in my opinion.

I was thinking of turning pic related into an office chair.

>remove the seat from my current office chair
>remove the legs from the spoke chair
>screw the seat of the spoke chair to the bottom part of the office chair

And also I'm going to give it a nice oil finish and a pillow but that's a different story.

I'm just asking would it be durable? Would it be nice to sit in?
Am I retarded?

Should work. Office chairs usually have the plate with 4 screws below.

Information for this type of work, for interiors,I would like to know how cool it is in summer and how cold in winter.

Especially in areas that are tropical of two seasons, extremely humid.

Suggestions for bait for use in snap traps as to aid in sending these bastards back to hell?
24 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Peanut butter.
Wrap a rubber band or something around it to make 'em work at it a bit or they'll just lick it off without triggering the trap.
>>
The only thing that's ever worked reliably for me is to glue a Cheerio or something like that to the trigger. That way they have to tug at it. Then no more mouse.
>>
>>1128427
>>1128433
Use a piece of cotton string tied through and around the hole on the trap's lever. That will work a lot better.

>>1128427
1: Set traps everywhere as already described (sticky traps too).
2: After 2 weeks of catching mice and 1 week of not catching mice, set out lots of rat poison.
3: Buy lots of Great Stuff expanding foam insulation & stainless steel pot scrubbers and go around to all pipe/electrical entrances and seal them off. Stuff the pot scrubbers into the holes so they are wedged then foam over it.
4: Inspect all the window screens and door threshold's sill and sweep to ensure proper sealing.

You can also use bucket mouse traps. Remember there must be water in the bottom or the mouse can get out. The soda can style that rotates, like in this image are the best to use because they do not need resetting or special mechanical knowledge.

You can usually buy a saw fence separately, tricky bit will be finding one to fit. Otherwise an angle bar and G-clamps

Hi /diy/,
a friendly question that I'd like to post here.
I do use for my home welds SMAW process a classic DC Inverter quality welder.

I'm in need to make a simple document for me and also some pals about some basics to recognise the various kind of electrodes (or welding rods don't know how you commonly call them).

Since the code for non stainless electrodes printed on the "bottom" of the rods is the AWS A5.1 coding (ISO code is much too long i guess), I'd like to ask you:

1. a simple chart about the various digit meanings. I know the first 2 or 3 digits are about strenght of the weld, the third the position, and the last about the current and material/application, but a good reliable chart would be very handy.

2. the position coding. I know that "1" means all positions, "2" only flat and angle welds, but there are other, and if so, what numbers are, positions?

Thanks in advance.

In my country, everyone uses boiler system for heating their house. BUt it is too expensive. My family paid more than 300 dollars just for heating entire house. Luckily we got big american style fireplace in my living room. Is anyone using fireplace(installed in the wall) for heating entire house? Fireplace can be substitute radiators? If it can, I am thinking about using fireplace instead

unless the fireplace is in the middle of the house or connected to ducts it won't do a lot.

Hey /DIY/, Please have mercy on me as I am more mechanically inept than you could imagine - but I am urgently trying to fix something on my motorcycle so I'll try and make this short:

I need to adjust a sensor that controls a valve. When the valve is closed, it should be 0.5 and when it's open, it should be 4.5

It's currently out of calibration a little bit (reading 0.58) so I need to bring it down.

I am currently using the upside down U setting on my Fluke multimeter to get these voltage readings.

This service manual is telling me "unplug the sensor and adjust the closed position to 1.5k ohms"

What the fuck does that mean? All I know how to do is get these voltage readings. How do I measure the ohms?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
"upside down U" = Ω = Ohms.
>>
>>1129958
Do you know why the reading rapidly changes from 0.5 to 500 if I turn the sensor too far?
>>
>>1129963
no solid idea, guess would be that it's turning all the way around to the highest setting.

Found in Sears, last I checked. Personally, I find the Irwin brand (with the straight jaws, not ZZ shaped like pictured) to be better. Also check out Sears Robo-Grip, which are pretty awesome if you learn how to use them correctly.

As for a pair with wirecutters, there is no such thing that I know of. Only thing with wirecutters are Linemans/Klein's/Dykes, and long/needlenose pliers, or dedicated wiresnips.
If you want wirecutters, you cannot go wrong with oldschool Klein's, (before everything went to Taiwan/China and is made of recycled car parts/mystery steel) which can be had on ebay for like $5-10.

First time poster here, didn't know if I should post on /ic/ or /adv/ but here goes

This girl I'm seeing has me head over heels and I want to make her something for Valentine's Day since she hates hallmarky corporate cards. Her favorite movie is The Silence of the Lambs so I figured I would blow my paycheck tomorrow at Michael's and get some craft materials.

I can't decide whether or not to make a clay garden gnome strapped to a board with the mask on or to make a stuffed animal death's head hawk moth. Do any of you have any knowledge of making stuffed animals that don't come from build a bear? I really think I'm in love with this girl and want to make her something nice and movie related.

Sorry for blog post
