Almost a year ago I posted here about bloomery furnaces and some anons directed me a little bit, I went ahead and did it during the past summer after reading a few research papers and watching a ton of youtube. However it didn't come out quite as well as I hoped and I wanna get it right when I do it this year. We used a shop vac as a forced air source through 2 feet of 2 inch black plumbers pipe, about 50 lbs of magnetite Fe3O4 from laguna clay company but I had almost no slag so I think I didn't put enough silica/ play sand in as I should have which made the bloom turn out poor. We also used 200lbs of anthracite coal instead of charcoal to keep price down and I'm not sure if that was an okay move. I gotta go now but I'll post pics of the shit that came out of the furnace in about 30 min.

What do? how do I improve?
>pic related its my cheapo furnace made of cement chimney blocks which melted into the bloom also fucking it up.

this is basically what we pounded down from the 50 lbs of magnetite, and the rest was strewn around in the carnage of the cement blocks when I went through it with a magnet to find anything magnetic.

My boss gave me his old air compressor but as you can see the plastic shroud over the motor basically disintegrated in transport. Just crumbled apart. Any ideas on diy replacements? I can't imagine those big ass capacitors are safe being exposed like that.

Hey /diy/!

I'm a coder with little experience in circuitry and I've got a question. I'm building a relatively simple circuit in which I need to use a solid state relay. Pic related is the one I got, except mine is rated 40A.

If I pass a current through the top that's below 24 volts, what happens? Anything adverse? (Poor conduction?)

Second post will be my circuit, if any of you want some context. Thanks in advance!

It's a subpar diagram to put it lightly, but it will work for my purposes.

CCS is a cycle control switch, by the way
>>
>>1138036
It will work with AC only.
>>
>>1138036
Your SSR is for AC which means it's probably SCR based. You need a DC switching SSR which would be FET based.

If you were trying to switch AC below 24 volts the SCR's would never trigger thus the SSR would not conduct.

Are 5 kreg screws on each end of a rail strong enough to hold a bed together?

On a bed you never get into? Sure...

Don't use a Kreg screw system for building a bed...wont be strong enough...use biscuits, Dominos, loose tenons, mortice and tenon...

PS: Queen size bed, 2x6 rails, 20 kreg screws total keeping them attached to the headboard and endboard

Ok guys i have a project, i need to design a spring to operate a safety valve. The reactor vessel contains gas at 250°C and absolute pressure of 10 bar. The safety release valve needs to open between 5mm and 10mm when temperature exceeds 300°C. The diameter of the valve is between 80 and 120 mm.

I also need to know a suitable spring constant and a suitable metal...taking elasticity, corrosion etc into consideration...any help is good help

Working on a project is fine, just don't let this distract you from the fact that in 1998 The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table.

you misunderstood the question. this is OPs mechanical engineering university assignment.

the point is to get OP to learn how to make a spring by understanding the properties of a material under load.

Starting today, all the gas appliances in my house and my neighbor's house are stinking up everything. Even the pilot lights make you want to open up a window. There's no leaks, it is the odor of the fumes from the flames themselves. It is terrible.

Anyone know why this is happening and how to filter it or something?

I plan on customizing an Ikea Linnmon desktop by first routing out a small section of the back (~1/4" thick, the desktop is 3" thick) for an LED lighting strip. My question is if there's a smart DIY trick for cable managing m my components along this same edge, or whether the LED heat will be bad for cables. Also if there's a better way that attaching some bulky wire thing underneath, or drilling hooks into the back

On my desk I put a thick "bar" below the surface, it's 2x square stainless steel stock from left to right with a sheet in between(200mm high). Eats up all lateral loads and I have 10 plugs and all cables hidden behind em.

Would not recommend routing in ikea "wood", the surface stuff is really important for their strength.

Lighting autist here. The heat put out by LEDs are pretty much negligible.

Hey /diy/,
I'm thinking of making a punching bag. I got these boxing gloves (for bag use) and wanted to try them out for some time.

I'm trying to reduce cost, but also want to make it so that it won't ruin my gloves in first few days. Naked tyre probably would (pic related). Any advice or experiences with diy punching bags?

buy an unfilled sack and hanging chain ca. $20 - shredded tires is (apparently) often used as filling, otherwise, mixture of sand (buiders yard/site), cloth, whatever - just sand too heavy/solid. For $20, save yourself a lot of trial and error, and mostly error.

Hello /diy/, I'm new to this board but thought I'd share something you guys might find interesting. I normally work as a mason and have barely done more than cut 2x4s and plywood with a circular saw or reciprocating saw yet I found great interest in building my own armchair after seeing how outrageously expensive they are in furniture stores.

Pic related was built with nothing but 5/8" plywood and 2x4s cut in half lengthwise all drilled together by drywall/decking screws.

It doesn't feel as comfortable as most chairs so I'm guessing I fucked up some dimensions but overall I'm kinda proud of what I made desu. It does the job though I know it could be improved which is why I came to this glorious board for help.

Anyway comments, tips, suggestions, and general feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I would think it's uncomfortable because you made it out of fucking plywood.

Like you can't even pass that off as trendy hipster etsy pallet and pipe furniture, that just looks unpleasant.

I mean good on you m8 for building something you're proud of but maybe don't post about it here.
>>
>>1136944
why u try to reinvent the wheel?
>>
>>1136944
I'd maybe understand making a table, but you do realize a chair is supposed to support a human being?

Point being, a chair is generally expected to be more frail, have less material than a table, and support up to 240 pounds of flesh without shattering and causing grievous injury - unlike a table which will at most times not hold that much weight.

There is a reason why chairs are made in a particular way, and from particular materials, buddy.

I inherited a bunch of tools from my grandfather and while sorting them I found a few that I don't know what they're used for. Anyone here have an idea?
The copper one on the left in the middle screws open and has like a tiny scalpel inside.
The blue one has a spring inside so you can push in the little tube to reveal a small axle inside. Sort of like a stamp.

I can provide more pics if needed.

Hi /diy/

When do I fire a contractor? Sorry in advance for this long long post.

I've built some desks in the past and some other simpler stuff, but I am not at the same level as most of you guys I'm sure.

I have had a contractor who was supposed to build me:

Stairs to a loft
Shelves under the stairs that integrated with stairs
A bedframe in the loft area
Some vertical wires for safety

In a little over a month, he has successfully built me stairs (and taken out the heater in the area where the stairs were). The stairs are not polished or anything, but they are walkable.

I gave him a diagram for the shelves (pic related). He first staged it with some plywood with a completely different layout, which would have made section A three steps wide instead, making B not wide enough for what I plan to store under it, with some justification that I'd need to fit coat hangers in A. I told him that I could just align the coat hangers the other way, and to build it how I diagrammed it.

Yesterday he calls me while I'm at work. He tells me he built the shelve separators, but hasn't worked out how he'll do the doors yet, and has followed my diagram. But many of the horizontal separators are at the wrong levels, some of them aren't even aligned with stairs. The vertical separator is also halfway between stair two and three instead of just being aligned with stair 2 like I asked.

Looking at this, I could definitely build something equivalent for shelves, and I'd put them in the right place. Not sure if I could build the lofted area I want but I could probably hire a carpenter directly. He's coming over in a few hours and I'm working from home to talk to him already because he says he can build the entire loft today.

I don't want my living area and loft where I plan to sleep to be unlivable for another month. Originally he told me the whole project would take two weeks. I assumed I should double that, but I didn't think I'd have to double it just for the stairs alone.

Should I just fire him?

That looks like a few days work at best, anon.

Has he spent full days working on it? Or just like an hour at a time here and there?

The stairs look nice though, for sure. If I were you, I'd just have him do the stairs. You're correct that you could do the shelves yourself, especially if you have experience with desks like you said.

At any rate, did you hash out a schedule with the contractor before work began? And if you did, has he met his end of the deal?
>>
if you are not happy and doubt his ability to do what you ask and maintain a decent reasonable time frame then shit can the faggot, there are more contractors and carpenters that could handle that then you could count, and you could even get a motivated pro to knock those shelves out in an afternoon easy, just tell this guy some family stufff came up and you have unexpected costs incoming and thanks and bye, pay for materials and the work done and show him the door.

life is too fucking short for incompetent contractors, if you are paying someone to do a job they should do 100% what you ask or clear every minor change to those plans before they lift a fucking finger if its going to incur you labor time or material costs.

Recently I "upcylced" a Lee Enfield/.303 Rifle container dated from 1945 and mounted it to my wall, and I plan on using it as shelves. Has anyone got good ideas for shelves that will look good in here? Or even any other modifications ect I can do to it?
