What are 10 games that if you were to give someone to play who has never played the N64 before, and you could only choose 10, and they had to show you the very best, and groundbreaking games of the system so they could get the idea of what the system was about.
My list.
>goldeneye 007
Defined console FPS mulitplayer, and introduced tons of FPS mechanics while being a 10/10 game to boot
>super mario 64
Do i need to explain? probably the best game of all time, certainly the most revolutionary
>turok
first FPS on system, and departed from the old FPS formula with its natural environments and enemies but still having the overtop violence and weaponry. groundbreaking graphics and animation
>wave race 64
incredibly graphics and control. still the best arcade racer of all time imo
>mario kart 64
best multiplayer fun on the system, still the best mario kart
>Zelda Oot
did for zelda what mario 64 did for mario. best game of all time? the puzzles were a huge step from the previous 2D titles
>pilot wings 64
open world simulation that gave you the sense of exploration in 3D for the first time that not even mario 64 could do
>blast corps
the best action/puzzle game of all time. still no game like it to this day
>star fox 64
incredible game. everything everyone hoped it would be. not as groundbreaking as zelda or mario, but took the original star fox and amped it to 11
>bad fur day
took a story based action/platformer that was full of fun and raunchy humor that was still a good game without the edge. lots of games like this now but back then it was pretty new

Speed Power Gunbike is one of the coolest games I've ever played.
The concept is pretty simple. You play as a dude/gal on a motorcycle that transforms into a fighting mech (or mobile suit I guess). Except, since the game is all about speed, if you're going fast enough when you transform, you turn into a giant fireball and wreck everything in your path. Transforming back and forth while still moving at 200 KM/H has to be one of the most satisfying attacks I've ever felt in a game.
Then on top of that, there's awesome, chunky robot bosses that feel like something out of megaman legends, street fighter combo-style inputs for special attacks, amazing music by Ippo Yamada, tons of tiny details like different music and dialogue depending on which character you pick, and nice touches like your character turning on the mech's headlights when you enter a dark area.
It also has one of the best endings I have ever seen in a PS1 game in a life, but I can't spoil what makes it so cool.
Who here has played this masterpiece? If you haven't, please go do so. If you have a Japanese PSN account, you can buy it right off the store. Plays beautifully on the vita.
Look at this blocky giant spider mech.
Don't you just want to blow it up?
Oh, and the second boss is a train that you chase behind with a motorcycle, and you blow up its cars one by one while it launches rockets and lasers and stuff at you.
I am also looking for just a little bit of information on this game. The (excellent) hardcore gaming 101 article on it here
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/gunbike/gunbike.htm
mentions that beating the game will unlock a secret character, but I cannot seem to make this happen no matter what I do. I've beaten the game with every character, and finally accomplished doing so without using any continues today, but couldn't get a new character to appear. Anyone know anything about this?

That sounds awesome.
Gonna download and play it later.

Name a flaw that isn't framerate-related, and assume that everyone was smart enough to switch to 1.2 Solitaire controls.
Requires the expansion pak to do pretty much anything.

Obviously senpai
It says right on the box
They took out the face capture mode over a bullshit reason
So we all agree that Rose Town was the best town in Super Mario RPG, right?
>>3589226
Why you gotta bring /v/ memes in here?
>now that the dust has settled
>so we all can agree
>what did he mean by this?
>really makes you think
>popular game is shit
>least popular game is actually best
But to answer your question...no... Moleville is best
>>3589346
I hated Dyna and Mite, and the minecart ride was stupid.
Merrymore is clearly the best. Because that tune is forever burned into my brain due to it being the town I got over 6 billion points in beetle blaster in.
Monster town >
Booster's wedding or fighting the Axem rangers were the best parts if SMRPG though.
Post /vr/ gore.
ok

a few Hundred Games.
Emulation didn't harm it.
Flash carts didn't harm it.
Repros didn't harm it.
Is there anything that will damage the retro gaming reseller market? Prices just keep going up and people just keep buying.
I guarantee you that emulation, flash carts and repros have affected the retro gaming reseller market. If none of the aforementioned methods of playing games existed, then prices would be astronomical.
Emulation in particular hurts the value of retro games since it's free and easily available with far more options and features than original hardware.
>>3604632
This, if emulation didn't exist old games would be even more retardedly expensive than they already are. Look at the Sega Saturn for an example of an expensive as fuck console to collect for due to the lack of decent emulation.
The same will probably happen with OG Xbox years from now, although probably to a lesser extent due to the lack of exclusives and easy piracy.
That said, there will always be a market for people who want the original thing, and the reseller market will thrive because of it.
But it comes in waves. For example, when eBay first went up in the '90s, Atari 2600 systems went for hundreds of dollars. Now you can get them for almost nothing. The same will probably happen to NES, but we have a ways to go before that.
If Nintendo were to release actual, genuine, brand new & working copies of old games then that would take a massive bite out of the reseller market. Case in point, Nintendo has finally upped Amiibo production, and re-released what used to be limited editions, and now Amiibos which were going for $60 are now back down to $13.
I already have an original nes is this thing good

So Brom copied his own artwork after all?
Or is this just a coincidence?
The two hands on sword pose is older than The Byzantine Empire
>>3604493
That's a pretty common pose for fantasy theme stuff.
>>3604513
But the same Artist and just 3 years betwen and also the diabolic skeleton theme...
Has anyone built one of these? I'm thinking of dropping ~$300 on building one and have a shit ton of arcade/console games on an rpi. Was it worth it? It looks like it could be fun.
Bar tops are a good starting point. The rpi wasn't a thing yet when I build mine so it was a game of cramming hardware into a tiny volume. Have fun with it. I do suggest having a set of games in mind and designing the controls around that beforehand. e.g. I should have just used a simple 3-button layout as I never ended up playing all the 6-button fighting games.
>>3604232
Why didn't you just use a VIA? They were more common back then.

what the FUCK /vr/ I thought we had a retro console repair general going but there is none
WE HAVE AN EMERGENCY
My poor, poor Gameboy Pocket was in one of my archive bins, along with cds and CD cases. I put it away awhile ago because it used to have intermittent problems booting up games, sometimes it will, sometimes after a lot of blowing and wishing, sometimes it just hangs at ©Nintendo. Best of luck with Super Mario Land.
BUT THAT DOESN'T MATTER THAT WAS AN OLD PROBLEM.
Now, I come to find that some IDIOT I don't know if it was me or someone in the past put something heavy on it, and I, first, found this with this darkened spot in the screen in the center, and second, found most of the case BENT, even if just very slightly, but BENT all the same. It is not so bad that I can't insert a cartridge, I can and it fits smoothly going in and out.
But this fucker is scaring me, and I haven't dared tried to turn it on, I don't want to short circuit anything if it truly is too bent.
oh GOD it's like looking at a mauled limb don't tell me it's beyond saving I'm so sorry Pocket I never got a Color you were with me all through Pokemon I traded with you
HELP ME /vr/
Game Boy Colors cost like 20 bucks. Just buy a replacement.
I forgot to mention, the screen area looks peculiar, you would think it would be popping out, but no, the screen looks RECESSED and the plastic underneath it/above the buttons is popping out just a bit l, same with the plastic above the screen, the screen itself, no matter how I feel it or look at it, looks completely flat
>Yeah man, you gotta check out Granstream Saga. They're calling it an "FF7 killer".
>>3603069
>indie stores
>in the 90s
yeah, my area didn't get a retro store until 2008
>>3603069
How can you kill a standalone game? I thought that term only applies to MMOs?
>>3603072
The only stores we had near me growing up were indie stores. There was an Electronic's Boutique in most of the malls though.
Mall stores were soulless though, and they had high employee turnover. The standalone stores were where it's at.
My friends and I always went to this one indie store down the road and started hanging out with the guy who worked there. I was a pizza delivery guy at the time, and whenever I had a comp pizza at the end of a lunch shift, I'd bring it to the guy at the store. I gave him pizza, he gave me vidya.
RIP in peace Gamer's Paradise ;_;7
