Does this still have an active player base? Thinking about buying it on Steam, but don't want to waste my money, if it's dead. I just want to play a real multiplayer fps again.

Hey, /vr/, how do I into Alpha Centauri?

I've played Civ 4, Age of Wonders, and master of orion, but I seriously want to learn SMAC too.

Firaxis tutorials are useful as always, which is not very.

welp start with a decent faction, some are easier to play then others. Zhakarov with the university gives a substantial early lead in tech, Deidres gaians have an easier time terraforming and capturing mindworm boils. Morgan gets early economy boost that helps buy units.

set your formers and early explorers to auto for quicker turns. you want two to 3 cities dedicated to pop growth for research and energy and at least one city next to a good mineral source to be a production factory.

is there anything specific you are having a problem with? mid and late game can be interesting depending on where people start off at on the map.

also get xfire if you don't have it already.
>>
>>3603292
i have xfire and the 3.5b mod

well the interface is kind of obtuse and i don't follow what my goals by midgame are

this game doesn't really punish you for infinite city sprawl right?
>>
>>3603318

It tries too by spawning more mind worms and locusts but by then it's hard to lose a city to them unless playing on higher difficulties. Also drones riot and you gotta nerve staple them if your policies allow. Policies generally determine your playstyle after that, police state or democracy type of choice.

midgame you can get an early UN victory when you have everyones comm and are strong enough. I usually start pushing for planetbusters and covert ops by that time, also getting viral/chemical weapons units on standby. generally it's a good idea to secure your own continent by then and develop sea bases and an air force.

also since you have xfire the alien races have different race specific victory conditions that are pretty cool

What was your reaction when you had to use a mouse rather than just the keyboard to play a game?

I didn't. I just continued using the keyboaRd for a while, then adopted a basted hybrid of mouse and arrow keys. I didn't go full wasd until 2014.

What are some notoriously hard games you've beaten? What are you planning on beating next? Heres mine;

Beaten:
>The Lion King (Genesis/Mega Drive/SNES)
>Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Genesis/Mega Drive)
>F-Zero (SNES)

Plan to beat:
>Mother (Famicom)
>Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels (SNES)
>Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (SNES)

And remember, no save states!

It's not as tight or enjoyable as the first or second game. I'd recommend playing through Secret of Mana first before you go back to it.

SoM is shit on by SD3.

If your party makeup was shit then it's going to be shit.

Take Hawk or Kevin (or both) and then Lise and you'll have a way better experience.

Better pacing than SoM. Story isn't a fucking mess like SoM. Better gameplay since it's more about brawling rather than spamming Magic the entire game.

So I never really played this game, I played maybe 20 minutes back in the day and never understood what the big deal is.

Friend urged me to play it and I just got to the "twist"

Holy shit. This must have been so fucking cool at the time.

That's pretty much the point, I think.

What do you guys think of this game?
Who was your favorite character?
Personally this has become one of my most loved games.

It's on of my fav RPG's of all time OP.
My fav character was Sundown even though his arc was so disappointingly short.
I've been dreaming of a sequel for this game, but old Square is long gone...
>>
>>3609871
love the game
favourite is cube for some reason
>>
>>3609871
It is a decent game, but I think it's pretty evident why it bombed, too gimmicky for its own good and overall poorly planned.
I like how every story plays a bit differently, and I think all those little narrative gimmicks like Pogo's chapter using unorthodox language and Cube being a silent protagonist is cool, but the game desperately needed much more polish on everything.
I guess my favorite character was Akira, actually I'd say my favorite character was Matsu, but eh, not a MC.

Which model should I be looking for if I want to get the "full package" of the Genesis and its addons (32x, CD, etc)? Also preferably with flashcart compatibility. I'm asking cause I know some models have no addon compatibility or even s-video output/downgraded audio.
7 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
VA2(US launch model) due to over amplification can have garbled audio with some games.

VA3 through VA5 Model 1s would offer the best over all video and audio quality, as well as compatibility with all games/add-ons etc. These are non-launch model "High Definition Graphics" label models.

VA6, 6.5, and 6.8 offer equal quality in terms of audio and video, but add the TMSS screen at start up, which amount to a software check to block unlicensed games. This affects next to no games, and has no effect if you're using a flashcart.

VA7 has quite bad audio quality.

Early Model 2s are very similar to the VA7 Model 1 and should be avoided. Later Model 2s have better audio quality, but have their own quirks in terms of balance between FM and PSG.

All Model 3 consoles have absolutely wonderful video quality, even under composite, and some of the cleanest audio you can get from a Genesis, but is held back by only having mono audio, and not supporting any of the add-ons, and several games due to hardware changes and fixes applied to it. Stereo as well as some of those hardware changes can be restored with modding.

Essentially ANY Model 1 or 2 can be made perfect with modding, but a VA3-5 would be the absolute best without modding, with VA6-6.8 following up right after.

None of the standalone Genesis models support S-Video without modding; An S-Video mod is simpler on some Model 2s and all Model 3s, but can be done on earlier ones with a bit more work.
>>
>>3609589
I'd add a 32x helps video output and can be modded for s-video.
>>
>>3609589
Should add to this that if you want to mod, early Model 2s are probably the best. Ironically come with a higher quality audio DAC than other models due to the CMOS Yamaha.

I don't know what emulator is best but I think there's actually an android port of FFT.

I generally find phones worthless for video games due to awful touch controls but TRPGs like FFT might be playable.

Downloaded GOG Tomb Raider 1 2 3. I'm trying to play windowed mode at a different resolution but this keeps on fucking up.

Whenever I start Tomb Raider 1, the DOSBox window opens up normally to the resolution I set, game goes to the splash screen, and opening videos. When the intro video is done playing, the 3dfx splash comes up and the window always resizes itself down to the small default resolution. This happens whether you let the video play out to the main menu or pressing esc to get to the main menu. Anyone help for this? I just wanna play TR1 in a not shit window size.
