This deserves a bump. Great game, even if Splinter tells you to "prepare for buttle!" I was so proud when I beat it all the way through for the first time, instead of just guessing the password to take me to the final save point with maximum stats.

Radical Rescue is a great gameboy game but I'm sure you're just b8ing since its very rudimentary compared to Symphony of the Night.

The final boss is also near-impossible.

I beat Scott Adams's Pirate Adventure when I was 10 or so. I remember the first Scott Adams game (Adventureland) being too hard, and never finished that one, but Pirate Adventure was easier.
(Adventureland says "Difficulty: Moderate" and Pirate Adventure says "Difficulty: Beginner")

You might try closing explorer.exe. I was trying to play Red Alert (or was it Tiberian Sun?) on Win 7 and it was having minor graphical glitches. Closing explorer.exe fixed that.

I think I hate this game. I used to really love it, but playing it again recently has made me feel really unsatisfied and disappointed.

The pistol is totally useless. The chaingun is unsatisfying and barely ever has ammo. The rocket launcher has horrible hit detection. You're never going to use the shrinker outside of blasting annoying fat commanders and battlelords. The devastator is worthless outside of fighting octobrains. and rarely has ammo. The freezethrower feels annoying and redundant. The only weapon that's really worth anything is the basic shotgun. So basically, one weapon from Doom 1 - except it doesn't even rise to being as good as Doom either. Every enemy outside of the most basic grunt takes multiple shots to kill, meaning most of the gameplay requires awkward strafing at groups of enemies which will inevitably shoot back at you with precise accuracy. While we're on the subject of enemies, this game is a total bore in the enemy department. I already mentioned that almost all of the enemies are annoying bulletsponges, but what's worse is how ugly, boring, and unvaried they are. Any map you play will inevitably boil down to: pig/chaingunner shooting at you. Play any level, official or fanmade and this will always be true. A total joke compared to Quake, Blood, and Shadow Warrior- which are all far superior games in terms of variety, levels, weapons, etc. Those games were released after DN3D? Sure. But again, original Doom is still way better. I cannot stand to fight more groups of bulletsponge pigs and chaingunners, with a shotgun, with no ammo, in an ugly gray environment. I'm going to be sick. I think the reason why everybody likes Duke Carribean so much is because that expansion actually has personality, despite the flaws.

Thanks for reading my stupid rant about a 20 year old game. I hope you understood my complaints. Feel free to nitpick this apart, or tell me I'm bad at the game, but I don't think you can convince me otherwise.

Sure thing bub.

It's a favorites thread. Grenade Launchers in particular. I love the Q2 launcher even if it is one of the more useless weapons in the game. It was visceral, it was blunt force, it had a neat reload animation. But the sound of the grenades clattering wasn't as good as Q1.

So what is your favorite GL?

The Grenade Launcher is Duke Nukem 64 singlehandledy make the game worth playing.

It completely wrecks the balance of the game though, especially if you're playing the PC mod port.

Use ScummVM. It will let you play any version of the game.

Trying to find a game:

It was a game contained in the disc pictured here, called: The Ultimate House of Games for Windows 95/98. Not The House of Games for Windows 95, though.

The game itself was a sort of space 4x game with very early graphics. You started out on earth after learning that what was once a pretty flourishing human empire is now reduced to you, basically, and a cloning center for reasons I can't remember. You build up on earth, eventually getting spaceships and colonizing other plantes in the Solar System and even the asteroid belt. You also start exploring the galaxy and discover two races, as far as I knew, the Rigelians and the Abaddon. You can attack either one if you wish, but if you sweet talk the Rigelians (who were lead by a pretty hot nordic looking chick) you could team up against the Abaddon, who are basically Hitler. Combat was only ever ground combat, turn based and consisted of a top-down view of a field in which your mechs were deployed. they had action points and could fire lasers or rockets. Sometimes an Abaddon ship would come to the Solar System (Venus, usually) and literally destroy everything in the planet. I never really beat the game since I was too young and the last battle against the Abaddon was too hard and you got no help from the Rigelians.

That's all I can remember really. I've tried looking for a place to buy the CD but found none and no game I've ever tried to look up around that time seems to be similar. The CD contained a bunch of obscure and unknown games, after all. I would really appreciate any help in this, since I definitely want to finish the goddamn game.

Have you tried checking a list of Windows 95 games? Maybe you can remember its name that way.
>>
>>3600259
I actually have gone down several lists of PC games from 93-98 that have space as a theme but I've never found anything that might be the game in question or remembered the name.
>>
Internet archive has "The house of games" and "Ultimate house of games 2000" but doesn't seem to have yours.

The only clue I that that disc ever existed was a since deleted/sold listing on ioffer.

Are you 100% sure the people were named Abaddon and Rigelians? That seems like your best bet, but I could only find a post-apocalyptic RPG, not anything in space.

>tfw you are a retro-faux

I have a load of fun with retro games. It is not that i see old games 'superior' to new games, but they are done in a different way that i prefer and that it is no longer there.

But, as much as i enjoy these games, i cannot shake the feeling and fact that these games belongs to a different period of time, and that it shows:
- You cannot feel the excitement of expecting the game and finally get it.
- You cannot fully appreciate what a game actually can offer because you have experienced thousands of games that were built upon that foundation. Limitations mean nothing to you.
- You can access every single game, including modern games, just for free. As soon as you feel bored, you have no incentive to keep playing, which contrast bastly with how would feel a person that actually had to pay for a game at the time.
- You cannot discuss the game with your peers for the first time.
- You cannot even discuss the nostalgia today because you weren't playing the game at the time.

Muh feels, does anyone understand them?

So, I see a lot of discussion about the uncanniness of early 3D games, like Super Mario 64. But have you ever gotten that sort of feeling from a 2D game?

I've always felt there was something really off about Pokemon Red/Blue. Maybe because I started with Pokemon Silver and mechanically it felt like going back to the stone age (even though I probably only played it a year after playing Silver). Maybe it was the bizarre off-model sprites that looked weirdly shoddy and unprofessional. Or maybe it was the fact that I was that kid with the GameShark and I spent a ton of time fucking around with the game and looking up glitches online. (Which ended up causing a lot of nightmares, I might add.)

In any case, when I play Red/Blue nowadays I have this nagging feeling that the game is going to fall apart at the seams at any moment. It's really unnerving and I hate playing the game because of it.

Has anyone else felt similar about a 2D game?

Yeah it's a little off. With all the glitches too and whatnot. Though all of this was accidental of course.

It would be funny if it fell apart! And you died... haha...

All of those games are very different, anon, meaning there are a lot of factors to consider. Do you friends to play with? If not, rule out the fighters.

IMO, play FF7/Castlevania SotN and THPS2/Oddworld alternating. I personally like to have one heavy game and one light that I alternate at any given time (Secret of Mana and Wario Land right now).
>>
>>3607014
I've played THPS pretty extensively and a little castlevania before, I'm not that good at sotn even though i'm a pretty big fan of the castlevania series. I've wanted to play oddworld for a bit. I also have lots of weed and am unemployed right now.

I feel like I have more games somewhere around here, I know silent hill is missing from that list.
