I'm playing the first FF game, the one from NES. But the excessive grinding and slow gameplay make it annoying to play.

Which is the best version of this game? Is there any version that solve these two problems?
41 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
You don't ever have to grind in Final Fantasy 1 even in the NES version.
Learn to use potions to heal yourself between battles.
>>
Probably the GBA/PSP. And if i were you i'd start with II, which has the most polished plot in the series. Unless you actually prefer gameplay, than jump to V.
>>
I beat the NES games for the first time in 98 or so after playing FFIII and VII. I tried FFI again in 2011 and couldn't stand it. A year or so later I played it on PSP and beat it again.

For me the PSP version was good enough to get me playing. Guessing any version that is based on that port would be the same deal.

Quick question /vr/. Who owns the rights to Hard Drivin' now? I know it was Tengen at first, but they are gone, then it went to its parent company Atari, but I believe they are gone now too. So whos left?

Atari is still around and likely own the rights. It's nice to see another Hard Drivin fan it's a shame that MAME doesn't support modern torque feedback wheel controllers. Have you played pic related? I believe it's the best collection you can get for console but it's Japanese only and released after shit like Gran Turismo so it stayed pretty obscure. I didn't even know it existed until I bought it in a lot with Runabout 1 & 2.
>>

They're not. Infogrames bought the rights to their name.

Sonic's first game is fast,

His physics, unsurpassed.

His early games, really great;

But all too soon, out of date.

When "D" subsides to "3."

So fanboys can't concede,

So Sega lost their way,

Nothing fast can stay.

I'll never get why the sonic fandom is so weird. I guess it's because I'm too old and never got into Sonic after the 16-bit titles.

>Somone on /vr/ other than me mentions Budokan

This is a momentous occasion! Budokan is a strange and wonderful game. I wish there was an offshoot of fighters that took it's ideas and kept working with them.
>>
Wasn't this just Karateka? Awesome game on 8 bit computers, strange and wonderful on 7800 and Famicom... Wasn't it kind of dated by Genesis?
>>
>>3596352
No Karateka is almost like a primitive beat em up. Budokan is a very different game and much closer to what we think of as fighters now.

Also still very worth playing. It's got a very unique control style. Get a rom and give it a go.

Can we get a thread about the Mega Man series going? Care to rank the games from best to worst and discuss why they are good or bad?
16 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
2 is bad because the weapon balance is godawful. The Items are executed somewhat interestingly, in that the order you do stages can affect how you tackle platforming problems on stages, such as Crash Man.
>>
>>3595574
The only stage I'd call bullshit on as far as platforming goes is Heat Man, because fuck those timed blocks. Otherwise, 2 on hard felt like about the right amount of difficulty barring the bosses.

My personal favorite is X4, if only because Zero's ability to unlock moves instead of changing weapons felt really fun and was useful throughout a stage, as opposed to X getting another elemental shot of some sort that fucked up a boss.

What is /vr/'s opinion on underwater levels? Do you like any?

>>3594202
No. I don't. I have a fear of deep water from almost drowning when I was a child and it has transferred to video games. Stuff like SMB is fine, but the more realistic it becomes the more cringe inducing it becomes for me. Not retro but the Leviathan DLC for Mass Effect was difficult for me to complete because of the deep diving.
>>
>>3594202

i find the water levels in this game and especially lost levels to be the hardest. hitting a ceiling bounces mario down really far and it can fuck you up. and the movement patterns of those bloopers are rather hard to avoid.
>>
>>3594202
No, they all ruin the momentum/pacing of the game and change the way movement works for at most, a level or two. They serve no purpose other than to annoy and break "rhythm."

>>
>>3593763
The massive, noticeable reduction in difficulty is what probably turned you off, judging by your criteria OP.

It's still a great game in it's own right though. If it really doesn't suit your fancy, I highly recommend Super Mario All-Stars.

I always see threads on /vr/ praising this game. Never thought much of it, until the other day I was craving some retro fps and decided to give the PC version a go.

I'm 3 levels in and fucking loving it. The praise is deserved. It's not a meme. How is this game not more well known? What the fuck happened to the FPS genre post-1998? Did Half-Life really set the whole genre off a shitty tangent for more than a decade?

This game is pure unadulterated FPS goodness. Reminds me somewhat of old goodies like Serious Sam, while at the same time sometimes it feels like I'm playing something like Metroid Prime with the exploration and puzzle solving and beautiful environments.

Can anyone recommend similar games/series I might have overlooked?

Also Turok general I guess.

Its fun to see someone new to the topic describe with passion something that you knew for some time. Its refreshing, seeing it for the first time by proxy of newguys eyes.
>>
>>3593714

I guess it's really refreshing for a game to have big uninterrupted chunks of great gameplay. No dialogue, no AI allies to worry about, no cinematic cutscenes other than the mission briefs or whatever. I feel like each level takes me about a couple of hours to complete. Its great to just get lost in a game and let time fly by. The guns, the health pickups, the powerups etc. It all feels so solid. It feels like a real GAME. I feel like regenerating health and other gimmicks really killed this genre.
