What is /vr/'s thoughts on this game?
This game was better than Super Mario World.
Well, it has nice cover art.
I remember a beach level, and controlling the camera to pan over a large maze with an octopus in the center.
is GOG a /vr/-approved site?
In as much as they cater to retro games, sure.
Do they make business decisions that drive me nuts? Yeah, but we're not exactly swimming in a lot of good options.
The problem with GOG is a lot of the games still feel like they're asking for too high of a price.
>>3599486
I've never paid full price for a game on GOG. They constantly have some kind of sale going, and if you wait long enough, everything goes 75% off eventually.
This may help you;

Starting this up for the first time, what am I in for? Any tips?
>>3599382
You're in for monotony.
>>3599385
This.
Only die-hard persona fans defend it nowadays really and they're really blinded.
>>3599382
The battle system is a bit clunky but there's quite a bit of depth. However the depth is meaningless because the game is absurdly easy. You don't even need to recruit demons, the handouts you're given are enough to carry you through the game (especially considering that they randomly become stronger if you spam fusion attacks).
I guess the only advice I'd give is to get a demon with the escape spell (trafuri?) because there will be a ton of random battles.
That being said, it's still better than 99.5% of other JRPGs.
tfw you dipped your uncle's letter in water. For real.
Feelies were the bomb. I seriously think GOG should mail you some cool shit when you buy games at full price.
That was pretty cool. Gaming manuals and maps and shit were so great back then. They often fleshed-out the gameworld in ways the devs couldn't do in the actual game.
A lost art

Games these days don't even come with manuals half the time anymore.

So, what's the best way to rip assets like graphics and such from old PC games?
I would like to rip these images used in the Quarantine intro. I'm guessing they are just images that the game shows? But how should i do it?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tJ7pXa-NK0
Also in a similar way, i would like to rip sound effect from an old amiga game. Recommendation on how to do that?
>>3607878
Screenshot them. If you're using an emulator, you can pause emulation at the right moment/frame. (And since Quarantine was relased on DOS, you could use DosBox to do that). Similarly, DosBox has a dedicated screenshot key.
This is literally it. People ripping sprites additionally proceed to put their screenshots into photo editors, and then remove background pixel by pixel. Which is why you see all these 'please credit me if used!' on old spritesheets - because it takes some work.
As for ripping sound, I have no idea - I imagine it'd be possible to e.g. disable music and put audio output to a recording device, or something like that - or perhaps scour raw game data for actual audio files. I'd imagine specific techniques would vary depending on what's easier for each platform.
>>3607929
If that's the case then how do people find and rip unused sprite animations?
>>3607929
I'm guessing this raw data scouring is the exact thing that i'm looking for. I mean, if those graphics are as images, guess there should be a way to pick them up from the data?
Why didn't Nintendo make another TLOZ for the SNES back in the day? ALTTP was very popular, as far as I know, and it was launched at a very early stage of the console.
Zelda thread, I guess
>>3607769
They did.

</thread>
They didn't need to. They had 3rd party developer support back then. Not like now where if it weren't for 1st party nintendo games there would be no nintendo games.
>>3607769
well there was the satellaview for the snes which had some sort of 'online' Zelda game on it, maybe they were trying to push that
Post instances where this lied to you.
no lies here

God, I can't even imagine how you nintendrones will be buttblasted when Sonic Mania comes out and become an extreme sucess.

Anyone else play Megamix?
the 4.0b release is pretty pro,
i've been messing with the "newer" super unstable 5-ish? build? with the re-hauled zones and it's fun... but borderline unplayable

Other people find video games interesting too anon, even girls!
I just got a vita. Can you guys recommend me good Ps1 JRPGs I can play?
The only one I ever played back then was Legend of Dragoon and it became my favorite game ever. I know to check out the Final Fantasies, but what less known ones should I check out ?
>>3606936
>less known ones
That's tough.
I do recommend Breath of Fire 3 and IV. 3 still remains my favorite adventure in an RPG and IV has my favorite presentation on top of looking great.
>>3606936
I'm not sure I would qualify any of these as lesser-known, but they're worth playing in any case:
Valkyrie Profile
Star Ocean 2
Vagrant Story
Parasite Eve
The King's Field games and Shadow Tower are pretty good as well, but I'm not sure how playable they would be on the Vita due to the control scheme.
>>3606936
>Legend of Dragoon
That game is shit. You'll probably love Suikoden 2.
What are some bad trends in more modern games that we either liked or didn't care about when they were in /vr/ games? I'll start:

Why aren't there any Saturn or Dreamcast game re-releases but the Genesis and in some cases Master System/Game Gear games get re-released a million times?
Sources are lost so no porting and emulation of those consoles isn't strong enough for commercial release - especially on other consoles.
>>3606178
What about in Japan?
It's much easier to port a simpler game.
Also, early 3D titles (3DO, PSX, Saturn) were built with specific system-hacks in mind.
Hell, a better example: most of the SNES games that are ported or re-released in collections don't have Mode 7 (which is a "SNES-specific" effect). For example, Megaman 7 used Mode 7 (in the credits scene), but the re-release didn't emulate this effect.
What are some ARCADE shmups that are easy to 1cc (or at least 1 LOOP clear) for a non-SHMUP player.
I'm not really a SHMUP player, but I can probably 1 loop games like Out Zone, Fixeight, R-Type 1, etc. (Outzone and Fixeight are probably closer to overhead run and guns though, which is probably why i like them in particular)
Out Zone has that ridiculously awesome yoyo weapon. Fixeight has like 4 overpowered characters (Mike Tyson, Ninja, Lizard, and Blue dude -- don't knock the blue dude, he's freaking amazing as long as you stay away from his S weapon). R-Type 1 first loop is kinda easy. Haven't dedicated myself to other shmups though to be honest.
>>3606059
Your not a shmup player and you can do R-Type in a single run. What version of R-type?
>>3606059

>>3606059
Try Image Fight, also made by IREM (R-Type).
You will be in for a challenge but because you can clear R-Type it wont be a problem for you.
Besides warcrafts of course.
