Which is better, Project 64 or Mupen64Plus?
17 posts and 2 images submitted.

>>3601185
a real 64
I havent had any problems with Project 64 tho but people say it comes with malware so idk if its safe. my internet runs kinda slow sometimes thinking of reinstalling windows
>>
>>3601193
A real 64 has terrible video output even with mods, it's basically impossible to get a good 64 experience on a modern set up.
>>
mupen64plus command line version
it depends on the game which emulator is best to use:
http://bhemuhelp.co.nf/n64mgcl/N64ConfigList.htm

but it works for most games.

the only downside is its hard to get started with and the controller is a bitch to configure

these are the settings I use that work for 90% of the games including Shadows of the Empire and Rogue Squadron:
>mupen64plus.exe --windowed --resolution 1024x768 --gfx mupen64plus-video-glide64mk2.dll --audio mupen64plus-audio-sdl --input mupen64plus-input-sdl --rsp mupen64plus-rsp-hle.dll --emumode 2 ROMNAMEHERE.z64

I've stopped using Project64 ever since they bundled malware with it.

why must this neato system have such a cool gimmick, a surprisingly good library, but also have a super flimsy design? I could be playing Mario Clash right now but my unit's eyes don't work and the oven does nothing.

>suprisingly good library

So which of the two dozen games released for Virtual Boy were actually good?
>>
>>3600874
Of what I've played, Mario Clash, Wario Land, and Red Alarm are choice. I haven't played the other well spoken-of games, like Teleroboxer or Vertical Force, and there's some very rare/expensive games (Innsmouth no Yakata, Jack Bros.) worth checking out (probably via a flash cart though). There's also prototypes, unreleased games, and homebrew that I haven't tried either, but which look pretty good.

But honestly, I could keep one around just for Mario Clash. I love that game. Emulation just doesn't do the visuals or the controller justice. I have a 3DS and a 3D TV, and neither one really captures what a VB display looks like.

>first mission
>navpoint is in an asteroid field
>fly into the field, crash into one of the asteroids, die instantly
>okay maybe I was going too fast, this time I go in slow and really take my time dodging them, almost reach the nav point, an asteroid comes in at the speed of light and instantly kills me again
So is there any method to dodging the asteroids or is this game just a bunch of garbage?

Keep your speed under 250 and you'll survive.
>>
>>3600732
My speed was 40 tho.
>>
>>3600782
Just a guess; this game doesn't limit its framerate, thus you should use dosbox and lower the emulation cycles

Nes mini reviews are out. But hows the controller? Anyone got a decent review for that?
25 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Aren't these not available for purchase until the 11th?
>>
>>3599939
It's a common industry practice for well-known reviewers to get things before the street date, usually from the developer or publisher.
>>
>>3599948
Well I don't trust industry reviewers because so many of them get paid off. I'll wait to hear from actual people come the 11th.

Is it still the best retro-style indie game?

Since there's a Dreamcast version, we can discuss it here on /vr/, by the way.
41 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
The Dreamcast port has really glitchy sound, the Genesis version isn't finished yet but once it is I'd sooner recommend that one.
>>
>>3599804
Game sucks tho. Serious, I would recommend 100 indie or non indie "retro-style" games before this one.
>>
>>3599998
Yeah? You want to give me a few? I'll snag them up. If they are better than CS, I'll definitely enjoy them.

>>3599804
It is definitely amazing for a freeware game. I probably prefer Shovel Knight gameplay wise though.

Original Darius for the First-Time as a Disc-Based Package

The first time the original Darius is released on disc for a home game console, realized thanks to the help of Hamster, who manage the Arcade Archives game download service. This is the Arcade Archives version of Darius with the cabinet instructions panel display added to create a more arcade-like atmosphere.

Interview Booklet and Super Play Blu-ray Disc

The interview booklet contains 32 pages of interviews with the Darius series staff. The Blu-ray disc includes super play videos of the PlayStation 4 version of Darius, as well as the arcade versions of Darius Gaiden and G Darius.

>yfw you realize that Barba's name was always the same as Volvagia's in Japan
I just realized that Volvagia is literally the Barba battle in 3D instead of a 2D side scrolling perspective. They both emerge from holes in the ground and spit fire if you're not quick enough to hit them.

Zelda 2's underrated. It may not have necessarily been a step in the best direction, but it sure as hell wasn't a step in the wrong one.

I can't possibly imagine what it'd be like if metroid was girl.

ITT we discuss the best retro jrpgs, obscure or not.

Here's a few notable games:
Der Langrisser
Front Mission 2
Fire Emblem 5
Tactics Ogre
Phantasy Star IV
Romancing SaGa 3
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Grandia
Seiken Densetsu 3
Valkyrie Profile
Live a Live
Metal Max Returns
Terranigma

>Der Langrisser
>Front Mission 2
>Fire Emblem 5
>Tactics Ogre
Strategy games are not JRPGs
>Seiken Densetsu 3
>Terranigma
neither are action games.

Just having some sort of EXP system is not enough to count as a JRPG.
>>
>>3598619
I think it would be beneficial to clearly define what JRPG means for the purposes of the thread since there are many different definitions floating around.

Can you guys think of any interesting things video games did to work WITH limitations of technlology rather than against it? For example, I love the way Poo's trial in Earthbound and the final battle of Mother 3 use the text-based battle system to convey feelings you couldn't directly translate to a modern visual presentation

I think that random encounters is an early example of using procedural content to work around the limitation both of memory and manpower. You don't have to define every single encounter, but just regions and party lists.

Another one would be how maps are handled in rpgs. For classic rpgs like FF and DQ, instead of defining every single location, you can only visit the most important ones, and the rest of the time is spent on travelling, which makes the player feel like he is in the middle on an epic journey without feeling boredom because of walking through endless landscapes.

But on the other hand, Zelda and pokemon went the other way. The map is well defined but smaller. Every single place is interesting
>>
>>3598545
I still love the old DQ style of world map. Though of course you need to have a lot of optional and hidden locations too if you want to keep the feeling of adventure

Anyone played this shit? I can't keep playing because the game just freezes during a cutscene. A staircase is supposed to come out as a shortcut, but it just gets stuck halfway and the cutscene never ends.
Wonder if it's juts the emulator? I'm using PCSXR-pgxp.
And this isn't the only game I'm playing where a red haired protagonist gets endlessly stuck in a cutscene. Ys Celceta PC is the same.
