Can we talk about Kunio?

This seems like a somewhat big series with a lot of weirdness surrounding the localization of the games, not to mention it's art style shifts and it's loose connections to double dragon, but nobody ever talks about it.

What exactly are you curious about?
>This seems like a somewhat big series with a lot of weirdness surrounding the localization of the games
It's simple. They initially didn't expect Kunio game to be such a long-running franchise than when they localized the first few games in the series (Renegade, Super Dodge Ball and River City Ransom), they basically treated each one as its own IP due to how aesthetically and mechanically different they were from each other.
Renegade = Serious beat-'em-up
Super Dodge Ball = Comical sports game
River City Ransom = Comical beat-'em-up
By the time they decided to localize Kunio under a consistent brand in the U.S., the NES was pretty much on its deathbed.

>not to mention it's art style shifts
After Nekketsu Monogatari, pretty much stuck with the chibi art style for most the series and only went back for the serious look when they made those two Kunio beat-'em-up on the SFC. Even the newer Kunio games on the DS and 3DS stuck to the chibi style.

>and it's loose connections to double dragon,
DD1AC was essentially intended to be Renegade 2 and the Hattori brothers in Nekketsu Monogatari are expies of the Lee brothers.

>but nobody ever talks about it.
/vr/ is mostly filled with EOPs who only know of RCR for the BARF meme.

Every game is exactly the same.

Not that that's a bad thing they're all good. But if you play one you've played pretty much them all.

Yes. You've played Nintendo World Cup, you know exactly what to do in River City Ransom.

I need your help /vr/

I've been stuck for five years trying to remember two PC games I played as a kid in the 90's.

The first one was some kind of educational game that had animal characters that went around on adventures through a jungle, mine, and a pirate ship, but for some reason also had nursery rhymes and paint function.
I'm pretty sure this is one of the rhymes from the game, but I can't be 100% certain. My memory is extremely fuzzy.
I think there was someone called Rusty.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwLtbIfFb2w

The second one is tough, it was also educational.
It was an Egyptian themed math game where you played an Indianian Jones like explorer who could choose between different locations.

One of the locations was "Climb up the pyramid by landing on the proper solution to the equation, but you also had to avoid the scorpions."
Another was "Step on the correct tiles with the correct equations or die"
Then the second part of it was exploring through a maze where you could collect Egyptian treasure and it would describe what each one was.

Also there was something about Set.

Please help me /vr/.
I've had this brain itch for going on for so long, and I've tried every "retro" PC site and I still can't find my answer.

Oh my god.

I'm an idiot.

I literally found it in two seconds on Ebay.

Five years of Brain Fart, solved in two seconds.

Fuck.

It is: "Read with Me 1&2, bundled with Memphis Math".

Jesus that was anticlimatic.

Thanks /vr/.

I guess posting here somehow pieced together the circuits in my mind.

Okay /vr/

Need your help again, so luckily for me someone made a clone of the disc back in 2015.

I tried running it through a Windows 98 VirtualBox and installed the "Read with Me 1&2" well enough, plays well (outside of minor graphical hiccups)

The main problem is that Memphis Math fails to install due to some arcane installation method that utilizes Vshare or something and won't actually install the full game.

I've tried my hand over with D-fend and DOSBOX however, due to the .iso being installation .exe's and not actual Game .exe's, I'm stuck at a point where DOSBOX says.

"Illegal command, setup win."

From what I've read that means that its a windows setup and DOSBOX does not compute.

I'm so close to this juicy nut that I've been reaching for, but I can't seem to crack it.

Any tips?

OP again.

Fixed my issue by unpacking the initial ISO and creating a seperate iso for Memphis Math, and installed it.

It actually works.

My five year journey has come to an end.

Odd, I really needed help, however I did everything I needed within 6 hours without actual help.

What a strange night.

It's been established that CRT HDTVs tend to have latency and break lightgun support. However, I've been looking into larger CRTs with VGA in as well as old 4:3 monitors for the sake of image quality and PC support.

Are these as good as plain CRT TVs in regards to timing? I recall a Dreamcast VGA box working with House of the Dead 2, but I was curious about /vr/s experiences before making this investment.

Some models I've seen for larger 1024x768 CRT displays include the NEC XM 29 and the Sampo SME-27FDL5.

I had a friend who owned one of these, it was actually a fun little thing (also quite cheap comparatively). I don't honestly think it was supposed to be a "console" as much as a novelty release with a few extras available for purchase.

Obvious answer to short lived console would be the Gizmondo, which was out for 11 months before it was discontinued.

Better question would be hardware that is obscure and lasted much longer than you'd expect, like the FM towns, which was in production for a whopping 8 years

dreamcast really wasnt able to take off, although its meager library is hella good.

I feel like its the same for the Turbografx and saturn, but those have a decent amount of japanese games.

Anyone familiar with fixing the "jail bar" issue with the sega genesis? I'm not using RGB/SCART only composite but it's still an issue for me. I have read to lift pin 50 of the VDP chip but one of the comments mentions this results in only black and white composite video. Anyone experienced in this?

>>
>>3804868

If you think this only happens on HDTV's you're in no position to call anyone dumb or a faggot. Unless you've got some tiny PVM you're going to see them now and again on the odd combination of game and system.

Just started playing FFVII with the Beacause translation and so far I'm liking it.

There are a couple of minor things that I would have liked to keep (like phoenix down are now called phoenix tail) but the improvements in dialogue make up for it.

There are also a few other changes like character names being in yellow and item names being coloured depending on their type. These are extremely minor but do liven up the interface slightly.

What does /vr/ think of retranslations of games like this?
46 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
I'm always in favor of playing original translations for games I played as a kid. Even if they are technically Inferior translations to modern equivalents. FFVI in particular. The Woolsey translation is just so much more charming than the newer ones.

I agree to an extent but have no justification for it other than muh nostalgia. Not that there needs to be justification for it as such but it is hard to argue one is better than the other.

The classic retro game with tank controls is Atari's Battlezone. It was even adapted into a simulator for the US armed forces.

They're controls used for tanks. Many autists use the word incorrectly to describe controls that weren't actually ever used in a tank. Much like "retro"
