Yes, they are faster on the street and better for lap times. This helps companies sell more, and because you don't need to know how to drive standard, your customer base grows tenfold. Therein lies the problem.
Like you shouldn't sell guns to someone who isn't trustworthy and doesn't know how to use one, I don't think it's fair to sell high performance cars to someone who possibly can't handle it. Not that EVERY customer is going to be like that, don't get me wrong; many enthusiasts are going to want to get their hands on cars with a fancy dual clutch automatic. But now you've opened up a can of worms, and Stacy and her mom can go out and buy whatever sports car they want and plow it into someone.

Each brand seems to have it's own characteristic. Roush makes loud exhausts. Borla makes the exhaust deeper, etc.

Not at all, the new Hyundais are pretty amazing.
Driven quite a few from the iX and i lines, also a Santa-Fe. They're realllllyyy, like really comfortable to drive, have all the creature comforts you need, and the leather is so soft.
The only downside is that Hyundais have no steering feel at all.
