>2017 KTM 500EXC

Tell me why this is a horrible idea to buy as my only bike as well as DD'ing it about 50% of the time to work (34 mile round trip of back roads).
>>
>valve check
>oil change

Repeat every 1000/500 miles.
>>
Any bike that isn't a supersport is pointless.
>>
>>15954853
this

those fuckers are too high strung for dd
>>
>>15954892
What the fuck kind of logic is this?
>>
>>15954795
Because it's a high maintenance bike. But generally getting a enduro for racing back roads to work seems like a great idea to me.
>>
>>15954795

I'm also very interesting in buying one (350 or 450) as in Belgium the taxes are low. The distance is ok, however maintenance is important with these bikes. (Go nuts and by a Six Days version)
>>
>>15957269

Squid logic.

I legitimately find higher power dual sports more fun than supersports; the latter is absurdly touchy and actively tries to kill you

Owner of a 2009 ktm 530
The oil change thing is true. I do mine about every 300 miles.
The valve thing for me has never been an issue. Im at 52,000 miles on it. Ive changed rings about every 10,000 and when im in there i check all the valves.
>>
>>15957723
I dont think the US is getting the Six days in the 500, 450 only.

Because you want a BETA 480rr.
if you are going to be DDing a high strung dirt bike you want the least high strung one of them all.
>1.8 litre oil capacity
>separate clutch and engine oil
>twin oil pumps/oil filters

Friendly reminder that KTM's have frames so strong that they snap triple clamps where a Japanese bike would have snapped the frame below the fuel tank.
>>
>>15958138
>>15958138
Only problem with Beta is the closest dealer is 6 hours away.
>>
>>15958340
Sounds like you just planned yourself a road trip, enjoy changing your oil every 5000km instead of 1000km.

No not at all.
300's are top of the line race bikes, you do not want one as a daily driver.
>>
>>15960367
That's not a dirt bike. It's a Yamaha RD350 with TKC80s on it.

What is a good Dual-Sport to DD about 50% of the time, but still take out and have some mild fun with in the hills?
>>
>>15961630
DR650, KLR650 if you want something that's better on the road and XR650 if you want something that's better off-road.
>>
>>15961630
no buy crf250l just no

Those are all pig fat and produce under 40hp.

drz400sm?

MAYBE 41 or so, they are great in terms of road bikes and reliability, but they suck in terms of power, weight, and fun factor.

Junk.
Wr450 is way better and cheaper

KTM LC4 640 E / Adv R.
KTM 690 E / Adv R.
Adv's will be more road comfortable due to windshield. Just get the R variant for better suspension (high MX style front fender). E's will be easier to work on and less plastics to break. Other than that the tires will determine if it's better on road or off.

>dding a non-Japanese DIRT BIKE of all things
>>
>>15963541
>Any Japanese bike
So much generalization. It is the fundamental law of nature - if you want to just ride, get Honda, if you get something different to race, showoff, or whatever, prepare to spend more time wrenching and hunting down various technical gremlins, than riding.
>>
>>15963602
To be fair Honda doesn't make any "modern" dual sports besides the anemic 250l

Literally the best performance dirtbikes on the market.
>>
>>15963668
What characteristics of an engine determine how often valves need to be adjusted? On my Kawasaki Ninja 250, the valves do actually need to be adjusted every 7,000 miles. I have seen THREE Suzuki GSX-Rs now that are over 30,000 miles with valves still in spec.
>>
>>15963785
I know shims usually require more maintenance.
>>
>>15963785
You should check them regularly. If they need adjusted, then adjust them.
Hondas for some reason ALWAYS need adjusted. Something about the design. Its rediculous.
Ive seen more than on honda just stop running while at a stoplight because the valves got so tight it wouldnt run.
>>
>>15963791
*usually don't require more
>>
>>15963800
This had always confused me. Honda makes the most reliable low maintenance cars but their dirtbikes require the most maintenance
>>
>>15963785
IMHO there is no indication a consumer could use. Probably depends on the materials used, shape, positioning etc that results in more or less wear.
>>
>>15964412
You check them like you are supposed to.
>>
Why not the 690r
>>
>>15957749
is that tight ass fuck maintenance schedule necesary even if you dont drive it like you was racing?

i mean some kawasaki street bikes havel valve check at every 50k km or so
>>
>>15965691
No, a lot of people only check valves ever 10k miles or so.
