How /n/ are electric bikes?

Just ordered my first one today.

>inb4 "just get a car", "it defeats the purpose of getting a bike"

I don't have a license and I live in a very bike-friendly town and regularly have to bike 30-40 km a day and still have energy to do hard physical labour for 8-10 hours.

OFF THE RAILS tells the remarkable true story of Darius McCollum, a man with Asperger’s syndrome whose overwhelming love of transit has landed him in jail 32 times for impersonating New York City bus drivers and subway conductors and driving their routes.

As a boy in Queens, NY, Darius found sanctuary from school bullies in the subway. There he befriended transit workers who taught him to drive trains. By age 8, he memorized the entire subway system. At 15, he drove a packed train 8 stops by himself, making all the stops and announcements.

Why is he being criminalized? He's doing the MTA's job for free.

What's the movie at 27:57? I remember seeing it a long time ago.
>>
>>1049654
all of this could have been avoided if they told him to fucking sign up on the wait-list for the MTA when he was 18.

How would one go about learning to sail? How dangerous would it be to go out on a boat say Florida to the Bahamas with a crew of 3 and little to know knowledge. Is this something that can be learned in books or do you need time on the sea.
63 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
I don't know about the Bahamas but here in the lesser Antilles you need some time on the sea before you can competently sail.

You can get by with a couple days but only if you are lucky, have a natural aptitude and understanding AND experience near pristine waters.

When it goes wrong it goes wrong really quickly.

This does not account for every skill either. Some folks are better at lines while others are better at motor mooring, docking, rough weather sailing, etc. Etc. While they are terrible at everything else.
>>
>>1035383

If you want to get somewhere with noe experience then a powerboat will be your best bet.
>>
>>1035367
Start by renting a small sailboat on a lake. Take classes on marine safety. Take classes on boat handling. Rent a larger sailboat on a larger lake or ocean harbor. Do this for a two seasons and spend at least 40 hours on the water. Enjoy your ocean sailing adventure. Agree who is captain before y'all get on the boat.

How exactly would you describe Sydney's rail network? When I look at the map I see a network designed to serve the inner-city but when I look at Sydney in google maps with the transit overlay it looks like it's meant to serve the suburbs instead. Would you compare it to a German s-bahn system? I hear locals on the internet always refer to it as "the subway" but judging from the videos and pictures I've seen of it, it clearly does not resemble any kind of heavy-rail inner city transit system in the world and the majority of it is clearly overground outside the CBD.

>>
Sydney's system is a mixed bag. The true city part is actually quite small (and correspondingly, the City Circle) compared to cities with proper subway systems

It is city centric, but much less so than Melbourne and Brisbane's systems. Sydney is a more bus-mixed system than the star topology seen in Melboune and Brisbane. The big trunk is the Main Suburban between Central and Parramatta. Nowadays, traffic is still slanted towards the city but much more is in the Parramatta direction due to growth

In essence, it points to the city as a feeder and it is quinessentially a suburban system. It extends 50-60 km in each direction from the city. What was chopped off when they broke up CityRail is also the Intercity network. It's a long distance commuter system people use just like the subruban, pointing towards the city
This is also where a lot of complaints come in about building a metro system to run the suburban distances. It's fucking stupid shit thought up by planners from desks who are foreign to the system and have never used it as suburban commuters

The best analogue to make would probably be a butchered Japanese city like Nagoya or Fukuoka. Just scale down the city, tear out the subway and drop in more comfortable trains (normalising Liner services)
>>
I see a network with many missed opportunities, and sometimes think about what it would've been like today if Bradfield's plan was actually completed.
>>
>>1050991
Yeah I'd say it's comparable to an S-Bahn. But it's larger and runs at a higher frequency than most German systems.

Hey there I've posted this question on various posts but no one can seem to help me, I'm working on a Santa Cruz blur xc Carbon, are these good mtb tires? The threading is kinda worrying. But I won't be using it much on the trails maybe 15% of the time the rest of the time will be urban

What about them worries you. They seem cheap, black, almost round and will hold air for some time....

Unless you pedal in mud or sand the tread doesn't really matter.

He's selling it for $200.

Should I get it? My last bike broke down.

It was from Walmart.

Basically I just want a good beginners road bike. What do you think top speed on this thing would be?
20 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Haters gonna hate on the cheap drivetrain, but I wouldn't worry. Tires and brakes might be pretty bad, but easy to upgrade if they suck too much.

Top speed will be the same as any other road bike that has the same riding position. Unless you are olympic sprinter and run out of gears, which seems unlikely...

What do you want use it for? I wouldn't race on it, but for just riding around it will be fine.

Now move into /bbg/

So with my shit walmart mountain bike(https://www.walmart.com/ip/26-Schwinn-Sidewinder-Men-s-Mountain-Bike-Matte-Black-Green/26999374),
I put road tires on it, and I basically just rode the shit out of it for an hour everyday. I like to try to see how fast and hard I can push myself. It's great fun. Endurance training is a lot of fun. It also helps keep my T1 Diabeetus in check.

But, the fucking gears began to break down, the fucking rear axle broke, twice, consecutively after repairing it(I dumped $80 into fixing this fucker), and then the brake cables gave way.

I owned it for only 6 months. Never wrecked.

It was very heavy, and I could only reach 14 miles per hour at a leisurely pace, not pushing myself, and pushing myself I could maybe top it up to 22 mph, 26 down hill.

One time though I reached 30 MPH going down hill so :/

Basically I want a bike that is better in every way than this shit. Will the one in the OP suffice? Will it be faster and perform better than that fucking garbage I owned?
>>
>>1050861
it is going to be much of the same, in different packaging.

you could pick up an old ten speed road bike, which would be nicer all around, for $200 on craigslist.

i found an old folding bike that looks kind of like pic related

it's rusty but it drives fine and the coaster brake works-- hav't tried folding it up yet

i put a vague found ad up on craigslist but if no one can describe it to me i'm keeping it

it looks like fun especially now that my other vintage bmx is fucked up from somebody trying to steal it.. but is there anything i should know about folding bikes?

am i going to crush the frame riding it around? or are they ok?

>>
You'll be fine
Make sure the folding mechanism actually works
>>
>>1050683
ah yes
i was planning on working it over completely in a week or two when i'm more sure no one's looking for it
>>
also
..
is there a protocol for finding bikes? this isn't the first bike i've found but i usually just have the police pick them up because they are obviously stolen and i don't really want to track down the owner myself or i just don't have any use for the bike

this one just looks cool to me and i like simple bikes and it looks more old and run down than your run of the mill stolen alley bike.. like maybe someone just put it outside their garage to get rid of it or something?

Hey ive been working on this bike for like 4 months this is my current progress. I was planning to make it a single gear. (No derailleur) however i do not want to change the rear hub. will this be an issue? i have a chain tensioner coming in to help. you guys have any advice on what else i should do?

Step 1: Put a chain on it
Step 2: Enjoy your singlespeed.
>>
if you want to keep the freehub mechanism (i.e. not fixed gear) then yeah you can keep that hub

however, it won't really be feasible to respace the rear triangle on that bike, so there's really no point in making further changes

just do what >>1049621 said and slap a chain on and ride

I often hear that railways in Switzerland and Germany are very high quality.
Which countries are Japan, Switzerland, Germany and other countries that are considered to have the highest quality of this?

You mean like subways and shit?
>>
It is all railway.
>>
>>1040879

The only three countries I have ridden rail on is the US, England and Switzerland.

NY metro was the easiest to figure out and the cheapest.

England normal rail was incredibly expensive and shitty.

London underground was much cheaper but shitty and LOUD wheels squealing so loud even Londoners were covering their ears. London DLR was a "killer man" line than threw your ass all over the place but luckily it was packed so people cushioned each other.

Switzerland regular line was really expensive but it was smooth as fuck and quiet.

I would prefer cheap and shitty to be honest. At least it would be affordable, which in my opinion is the main point of public transport
