Discuss transportation in and around Chicago, Illinois.

The Amtrak Hiawatha has saved me at least 15 days of my life that would have otherwise been spent in traffic
>>1045032
The flight paths at O'Hare were changed quite a while back so now I don't hear planes fly overhead every half hour, which is nice. I still have to worry about the fact that at almost every second I have a chance of being stuck waiting for a train for an unknown amount of time, or being run over by feral soccer moms.
>>1045032
I can't tell if that's a model or not.

What is the best way to say "no" if someone asks you to swap seats with them on an airplane?
"no"

"50 bucks"
/OSG/ - Owen Sound General
Enough big city spam, it's time to embrace small city charm. Owen Sound has a massive transit system encompassing the entire city with regular service.
>buses
>ferry service
>good taxi system
>installing bike paths throughout the city
>quick to get from one part of town to another
>central station is actually central
When will /n/ embrace the small city master race?
>>1047955
Only poorfags, the elderly, and mentally disabled people use public transit, everyone else has a CAR. Sperging out on public transit, unless you're a City Counsel member, is a sure sign of some sort of mental disorder. Better check yourself.
Post questions about buying bikes here.
I'll start.
Got a Boardman Road Sport with Claris as a Winter/Commuting/Take Away To Work Away With In Back Of Truck bike recently. Been in denial but its a size too big for me. Its in good condition I reckon I can get £200 for it second hand. Was looking for a replacement of a similar cheap Claris/Sora second hand bike around the same cost. A guy I know is selling his Spesh Diverge A1 with Claris, good condition in my size, for £275. I've not really ever thought about the whole adventure bike/gravelbro thing before but it looks versatile and it isnt any heavier than the Boardman which is managable. Also, I often work away in places with bad roads. Should I do it, if I can sell my bike?
>>1043316
You should definitely switch bikes if it's the wrong size but I would give serious though to upgrading a bit too. Something like this ↓ is a hell of a lot more bike for not a whole lot more money.

I have a Giant TCR with campag centaur that I use most of the time in good weather/weekend rides but Im just looking to replace my cheaper bike. I work away a lot and I dont wanna take my main bike away with me in a work van all the time. The bike I'm selling is more for that kind of thing and commuting etc. A beater bike if you will.

Do you mean los angeles proper or la county?
The simple solution is to have 12 lane freeways everywhere with extra wide lanes.
>>1034213
That video reminds of how much I hate everything
>>1034253
No, that's the simplistic non solution as it would create more congestion on the roads leading to the freeways.
The real solution is to give everyone an alternative to cars that's better at getting them where they want to go. There are many options, mostly rail based.
Anyone know what kind of train or what train is on the right?

Looks to be a Japanese National Railways 481 series EMU.

The paint scheme and the nose also kinda look like Vindobona
Thank you
photo source: Cycling promotion fund, the photo provide a visual comparison of the amount of road space used by different transportartion means to carry 70 peoples
These bieks still are individual traffic though.
Given more people, a light rail might still be more efficient than a bus.

Bikes don't wear out the riding surface... I bet there is a bike specific road material that wouldn't need maintenance for decades
obviously less pollution
Healthier population could be neutral since end of life care is actually cheaper for fast dying fat smokers

Is it cheaper to take care of a physically and mentally capable 70 year old woman (my grandmother who lived a healthy life in the Caribbean) or a 1 legged, diabeetus, Alzheimer's, oxygen tank carrying 67year old (her cousin who lived an unhealthy life in America)
Monorail...monorail...monorail...monorail...
I hate that monorails have become a meme from a shitty Simpsons episode that aired over 20 fucking years ago.
They're actually a pretty efficient method of mass transit in the right circumstances.
>>1007337
That pic looks more like a nom-a-rail... maybe someone with some skill can caption it?
>>1007347
Is there any practical reason for putting it under the rail instead of putting the rail lower and putting the train above the rail? I'm curious.
Eurasia fuck yeah.
Who else would like to operator on one of these lines?

It should be possible to construct a standard gauge connection between China and Iran.

Hi /n/ its me, trainguy.
I'm currently on holiday in Tasmania.
This place sucks.
There are no trains or trams. At all. Just buses. Outside of Hobart there are only extremely infrequent coaches. And in Hobart its Saturday so half the buses aren't running and the rest are hourly. That's if you can figure out the route maps.
And getting here was a nightmare. First the plane was delayed an hour and 40 minutes, we left when we were supposed to arrive! Then waiting another half hour for luggage. Not to mention getting to and from the airports.
How the fuck can Americans say this sort thing for a mere regional flight is better than catching a high speed train?!
Yes, Hobart is terrible. I wouldn't want anybody else to come, for their own sake of course.
>>1042911
it would be great if you could get every bus timetable (i collect them) you see in hobart and mail them to me in the united states
but that's never gonna happen
>>1042911
So you're bitching because you had a bad flight. Or did you really expect there to be a train going 240 km across the Bass Strait?
Where did everything go so right?

What's a good first car for someone in the US who just got their license?
Currently thinking a used 2011 or more recent Camry or Corolla might be a good idea, I've got a budget of about $14k.

Welcome to burgerland, the land of Fatman and lazy gunholding phycos.
How would you like to be killed?
>>1044023
Oh shit, is that the whomping willow?
>>1044023
I'd rather be fat, armed, lazy, and free, than forced into a horrible hell hole where simply defending yourself is a crime. No point in being forced to be healthy if you can't protect that. Coincidentally I am one of the slimmest and healthiest Americans, 125lbs and I bike every day. I don't even own a gun yet. Most hardcore conservatives and rednecks would probably consider me and my ideals, liberal garbage. But I'm glad that I can arm myself if I wish to, and that people can think dumb shit if they want. I'd rather see a dumb and happy person than a perfectly functional member of society who is a slave. I don't personally get along with most other Americans, but the freedom to do whatever we want no matter how stupid or genius is an overwhelming aspect in favor of this country over others that has yet to be topped by anyone else. So you can have your safe, unarmed citizens, and communistic society where no one gets hurt and everyone has to suffer for it, I'll keep my dumb, fat, lazy, free country.
Driving on the left or right side of the road. Discuss which we should.
Drive in the direction of the flow of traffic.
