Merger of a military aircraft manufacturer (McDonnell Aircraft) with a largely commercial manufacturer (Douglas Aircraft) got the commercial division fucked over.
In the aircraft biz, it's just too much fun to market to the DoD (hookers, cocaine, kickbacks, etc.) rather than commercial customers. So corporate concentrated on gov't contracts and let the commercial division die.
Same will happen to Boeing after McDonnell-Douglas took them over.
