So I want to get a bit into high art because so far I've experienced art through games, books, animation etc.

So I'd like to mention some titles that I like in terms of art design or general atmosphere in hopes to find painters that produce something that might resonate with me.

Titles: Torment, Angel's Egg, Feherlofia, Dark Souls, End of Evangelion, Book of the New Sun (I know it's a book), Blame!, Casshern Sins, Metabarons, Shadow of the Colossus, Morrowind (know the graphics weren't that great, but liked the concept art)

I of course know the graphic artists that work on those titles, but I'm looking for painters. No need to mention pic related either.

You could look at art of books.

Dark souls has design work books.

To be fair, I would personally look at the ideas and look at real life instead of copying other peoples work.

Dark Souls for example is based on a lot of books, for example if you read Conan the Conqueror one of the levels of Dark Souls is from that game, the one with Seath.

So I would personally ignore Dark Souls and read books by Robert E Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, Mythology.

Well, I have read books by those two authors and used to have quite an interest in greek and mesoamerican mythologies In mythologies in general pretty much. Book of the Sun is one of my favorite works of fiction and it mixes science-fiction with mythological aspects.

In fact books used to be the medium I would engage with the most, it's only in the last five or so years I realized how much great works there are when it comes to visual media.

Is sight-size worth spending serious time studying? Is the whole "training you eye to see" real or just a meme to justify not grinding construction and just go noodle polished shit? This was mostly cause I haven't found a steady plot that deals with how to learn values and I keep hearing sight-size, especially Bargue - in limited doses - works it out, wanted to know how you guy's experience was with sight-size.

it can't really hurt, can it? give it a go and see if it makes seeing errors in your drawing or whatever easier, and if it does, do it for a couple of weeks and see if your 'eye' feels trained.

you should definitely do the brague plates though, sight-size or no, they're very useful. i can't count the amount of times i've seen that exact brague foot in some painting or illustration.

Well I like it. What you've done is changed the theme of the composition by adding more empty space. It is no longer about this object to ponder, but about the relationship between this object and this space to ponder. Frankly, I like that. The fact that you didn't bulls eye the object like the photo makes it work even better aesthetically. Be it from accident or subconscious design sense, enjoy that it happened. Learn from it and move on to the next painting.

To become a professional what? There's no universal list you need to study. It depends what industry you work in, what your position is, whether you are a specialist or a generalist etc. Just study what interest you.

Does anyone else have this constant need to hide away from your known aliases, to make a profile from scratch every time you want to do something new?
That is consuming me lately, and there's the obvious downside of not having an audience beforehand. But the idea of centralizing all my art under a single alias feels wrong, and I don't know what to do anymore.

No, having an alternate alias for your degenerate porn doesn't count. I'm talking about hiding for no obvious reason.

I more or less understand the basic difference, what I've been wondering is, the skills used between both are basically the same right? It's simply a job title is it not? It can be interchangeable with no regards to skills, techniques, or even level correct?

I'm asking because I've been looking around for 'non-accredited' art schools like CDA and Brainstom and they all seem to make a big emphasis on being concept design schools (same for FZD). I'm a little weary because I've never worked as a concept artist so I'm not really 100% sure that's what I want to do in the long run. Which brings me back to the initial statement, does it really matter? Whether I end up becoming more of an illustrator than a concept artist, doesn't studying concept art or the same stuff in general end up being beneficial to my skills regardless?

There's some overlap and some artists do both, but they are quite different jobs with different end goals and different skillsets. "Illustration" is a very broad term too and encompasses things like editorial or other really stylized artwork.

The main difference is concept art is not an end in itself, but rather it is used to plan out a larger project such as a game or film. Illustration is the final product itself though. Because the two are used so differently and have different goals the aesthetics and approach of them needs to therefore be different.

No. There's a different set of skills needed to be an illustrator--storytelling/narrative, composition, posing, knowing what to leave out, style, full scenes etc. Many concept artists don't really have these skills fully developed. To illustrate you need to also be able to bring a higher level of polish and know more on painting design like edges and colour. All that said, the reverse is true too and many illustrators are lacking the sense of design and visual library that most concept artists have.
