In my personal opinion, mind you, personal, art should be defined by quality. And while there is some good anime art, the majority of it is unoriginal garbage that's repeated over and over because uneducated weeaboos prefer quantity over quality. The rare exception to the anime rule would be in original anime-styled artwork, for example, in the anime Katanagatari. This anime was still heavily influenced by other works, but it's about the most original anime artwork I can think of off the top of my head.
Anime 'art' is easy to make, reproduce, and distribute. So while it's still, in a technical sense 'art', it's shit. And any seasoned artist wouldn't recognize this utter shit on the same level as some greater works.

First off, anime is, despite being refered as one, NOT an art style. It's a term used for animation produced in Japan, regardless of the style or animation used. It originates as an abreviation of the word 'animation'. Saying animation isn't a form of visual art is just as retarded as saying movies or video games don't have artistic qualities. As those media are a result of a creativr decision making process they qualify, in a broadet a broader sense, as art.

If we speak about certain styles that were influenced by japanese animation and comics, it's safe to say that they, for the most part, are pop cultural works, meaning they are self referencing and appeal to a current audience. While most pop cultural works are low in artistic quality, since their main goal lies in entertainment, they still have cultural influence.
You don't have to like overused, non-reflective styles, as they are in fact of little artistic value. Yet, I would argue, they still fit into the qualifications of being considered 'art'.

Personally I would advise against drawing 'anime', since copying styles blindly based on theit visual appeal will hinder your personal growth as an artist, since the crative decisions that lead to the style were not made by you. If you want to study a certain mangaka or animator however, go ahead and learn. Figure out how they came to their style by analysing it and always look at their sources of reference and inspiration. If you do that, you will actually gain a lot more than those, who dismiss 'anime' conpletely because they're parroting some art teachers opinion. Think for yourself.

Are you blind or just retarded?

Ask an absolute beginner to do what I have done, design an entire image like that, composition and everything and then actually make it in Photoshop.


I'm not saying I'm the best at anything, but I at least know more about how drawing works than I did before.

Okay I get what he's saying. He went from being able to barely draw a stick figure to making some progress (even if it isn't amazing)... If this is true maybe he's learned a bit. He still has alot to learn as do all of us. Don't waste time discouraging other guys just trying to make it. We're all trying, everyone is just on different levels
