Why does /g/ hate Windows 10?

It's literally no different from Windows 7 or 8.1, just more modern.

Windows 7 and 8.1 has telemetry, Microsoft can still easily use your data with the universal backdoor.

All you have to do is disable a few things and it's good to go.

>Disable automatic driver updates
>Turn off syncing
>Turn off all privacy settings

Ez, you now have an OS that's more fast, secure and stable. It's also free.

this is actually one of the deal breakers for me.
i would consider installing windows 10 if they didn't force you this shit

Hi /g/, should we bomb Pakistan with drones, seems a little harsh.

Anyway, I'm a PhD student in one of the top 5 CS programs in the world. I don't own a rMB but another PhD student does and his research area is in graphics so I would have assumed he'd need access to more powerful resources. He seems happy with the rMB though, so I asked him about his use case to try and understand it (we're too well-funded for him to be stuck with anything that he's not genuinely happy using, the way some people retrospectively justify their mistakes because they don't have any alternatives).

The gist, from what I've seen, is that the rMB has an uncanny valley of appeal. If you've been happy with an iPad but occasionally thought "sometimes I write slightly longer emails and I wish the accessory keyboards weren't such shit", then you're set, this is the device for you.

If you're moderately competent, then this is going to bug the shit out of you. You're just not going to be able to get your shit done with this.
>If you're very competent, then it's not quite the uncanny valley where everyone reaches nirvana, but there's some group of people who just dump all of their work onto remote machines (I mean everything, even editing), in which case the retina Macbook turns into an excellent "thin" client of a machine that's not hooked into Google, has the display resolution scaling that OS X is famously good for, etc...

I'm close to that use case myself, but I'm not there yet. I honestly think I could take the shortcomings if either of the following happened:

- Apple refreshes the rMB with more ports (they did this with the MBA, reaffirming the truism that buying first generation hardware from anyone is a fool's game)

- someone makes a fairly discreet USB battery pack that can charge a rMB at a reasonable speed. I've seen some big hulking packs that would work, but I want something like pic related (this one would barely keep the battery afloat; I want actual positive effect charging).

I've read about Tox on https://qtox.github.io/ and other pages, but they don't quite explain how it works.

How does the Tox network actually work without centralized servers? How does your computer finds your friends and get their online status?

my biggest fear is performance.

I'm coding 2D tile maps and everything like nested lists containing objects iterating over other nested lists containing objects.

but I'm afraid looping over every lists (like looping the tilesets with the characters, enemies, bullets, sparks) is the worst possible scenario.

my game is a 2D shit on libgdx, how do I overcome this fear I'm doing shit performance?

If this is a hobby project I wouldn't worry about it until you start to notice slowdown. Sounds like you could use a quad-tree or some variant to do stuff slightly better. But if you don't know what that is it's honestly probably not worth the massive detour to learn it until you need it.
>>
>>56009661

for (Enemy e : enemies)
{
for (Tileset t : tiles)
{
for (Spark s : sparks)
{
// Do the game code
}
}
}

this is my code structure generally.
Imagine being the worst case scenario a 2D rpg maker game with some touhou style of gameplay.

Should I learn Ruby on Rails or PHP? What are the pros and cons of these two languages? I already know HTML/CSS/Javascript.

between the two, probably RoR, but if you're looking for a server side language you should probably look at javascript (and specifically Node.JS as a framework)

Since I first heard about it I've been quite interested since I'm mainly a laptop user for the mobility but when I'm home I like to enjoy a game or two.

Something bothers me though. Why is it so damn expensive? It seems like they try to get a crazy margin over this product by milking retarded buyers. Doesn't seem to be worth it for now but I don't really know how markets work, do you know when we should expect the price to decrease? A year? 2?

I love the idea of building a sleeper PC. Does anyone have experience with this? I am having a hard time finding old beige PC cases that look half decent. I've gone to garage sales and asked friends for any leads. What am I doing wrong? The IBM Aptiva case has me diamonds but its impossible to find

Recommend a good email provider.

1. something that will last for a long time
2. not Google, Yahoo, MS...
3. must be free (or at least very cheap and payable with something like bitcoin/eth)
4. standard IMAP compatibility, no encryption
5. good lightweight web UI
6. no deletion for inactivity after a couple of months
7. decent privacy (aka hiding your sender IP in headers)

So far I found openmailbox.org, which seems to have all of that, except I'm not sure if it will last. They beg for donations a lot.

yeah but the OP doesn't have a borderline autistic sense of propriety over those industries. a tech store at the louvre has to be what he wants or he'll be sad.

Do any of you fine /g/entoomen have experience with surveillance cameras?
My grandfather is in his 80s and I want to install several cameras around the house so we can monitor him.
I have no idea where to start, what are good bang for buck cameras, whether the cheap chink cameras are good enough, what software I should use etc.
Any tutorials and resources are welcome, thanks.

>Are you filming outside for criminals?
Get one that uses actual wired connections. Wireless ones can be knocked out by a simple microwave or ham radio sometimes. Get the kind that route back to a DVR that connects to a TV. Costco sometimes has good deals on these

>Cameras around the house

You can potentially go wireless on these then, but you'll need a good WLAN network to suppor them. IP cameras are your best bet as they can just be accessed locally Via web browser by typing in the IP. If your in the same house, just have it connect via local IP (10.0.0.x or 192.168.1.x) into your browser, and boom, you got a video feed.

If your on another network or a different house, you could either use a VPN service to "be in your gramps house" and use the same method to access them as if you were there. But some IP cams come it the option to be hosted and supported via the web, if you do this though, they can be expensive, and I DO VERY MUCH RECOMMEND YOU ADD A PASSWORD TO THEM IF YOU ARE HOSTING THEM OVER THE WEB so that way /b/ fags cant spy on your pepaw.
>>
>>56009155
I'm in easter europe, the criminals I'm worried about are gypsies trying to scam or rob him, which happens at least once a year.
I doubt they are smart enough to be jamming wifi cameras.

What I was thinking is 3-4 wifi cameras, a decent router, a PC and either record on local storage on the PC, or better over the internet on another computer.
Because if gypsies rob him they are sure to steal the computer.
>>
>>56009213
Then I suggest the IP cam method. Some might come with recording/archiving software
