I recently found out about Bitcoin and after a bit of research about how it's mined, I just realized - why not build a solar powered PC to mine it? I live in an area where it's sunny most of the year so it's literally free money at this point after the initial investment. Would this work? Even if it doesn't get more than a few hundred bucks a year it's still free.

The amount of power you can harvest versus how much you need to mine is the problem.

Not to mention offsetting the initial cost of building the solar powered PC.

I'm using c++ to decode some base64 data. I'm using a dynamic char array to store the decoded data. How in the fuck do I iterate over the memory located at the char array in 6 bit chunks so I can write to the address exactly 6 bits after the array address?

Bet none of you even understand what I'm on about

You can test individual bits using bitwise operations/masking/shifting.

Can you post some code? I'd like to read it.

Read 4 chars, write 3 bytes.
1st byte equals 1st char left-shifted by two plus 2nd char right-shifted by 4.

Even worse idea than buying used GPUs. Unless it was a laptop pull that had about 1 hour of use before it was swapped out with an SSD, kys.
>>
>>56014079
There 2 things in 25 years I only bought used once and decided that I will never do so again.

A used HDD because my broke and I was too cheap. It died 6 months after that taking my first digital camera pictures with it.

A used 8800 GTS that died in 3 months.
>>
>>56014079

Mother of god dont use used hard drives.

New ones fail often enough to fuck you over.

Is there any reason I will ever need a floppy drive again? I just found this neat USB IBM floppo and want to keep it because I'm a Thinkfag, but realistically when would I ever need this?

>tfw Putnam score 0

I can still be a computer scientist through hard work right?

No.

Near the end of freshman year at Harvard, Breidbart recalls how Stallman conspicuously ducked the Putnam exam, a prestigious test open to math students throughout the U.S. and Canada. In addition to giving students a chance to measure their knowledge in relation to their peers, the Putnam served as a chief recruiting tool for academic math departments. According to campus legend, the top scorer automatically qualified for a graduate fellowship at any school of his choice, including Harvard.

>Like Math 55, the Putnam was a brutal test of merit. A six-hour exam in two parts, it seemed explicitly designed to separate the wheat from the chaff. Breidbart, a veteran of both the Science Honors Program and Math 55, describes it as easily the most difficult test he ever took. "Just to give you an idea of how difficult it was," says Breidbart, "the top score was a 120, and my score the first year was in the 30s. That score was still good enough to place me 101st in the country."

>Surprised that Stallman, the best student in the class, had passed on the test, Breidbart says he and a fellow classmate cornered him in the dining common and demanded an explanation. "He said he was afraid of not doing well," Breidbart recalls.

>Breidbart and the friend quickly wrote down a few problems from memory and gave them to Stallman. "He solved all of them," Breidbart says, "leading me to conclude that by not doing well, he either meant coming in second or getting something wrong."

>Stallman remembers the episode a bit differently. "I remember that they did bring me the questions and it's possible that I solved one of them, but I'm pretty sure I didn't solve them all," he says. Nevertheless, Stallman agrees with Breidbart's recollection that fear was the primary reason for not taking the test. Despite a demonstrated willingness to point out the intellectual weaknesses of his peers and professors in the classroom, Stallman hated the notion of head-to-head competition.
>>
Sure you can.

You'll just be shit.
>>
Putnam problems have little, if anything, to do with programming problems. The format under which you are forced to solve them bears little to no resemblance to the way programming, or real mathematics, is done.

What is the biggest waste/misuse of technology you have ever seen in a business setting? Intel donated a bunch of servers to my local university and they created a lab with them. However, the room obviously couldn't support that much of a load as the machines would lose power as soon as around 8 of them were running. Rather than actually investigate this issue, they got rid of the servers, citing the computers as faulty.

I work for an ayrospace company.
Mostly f35 parts
They have a server that stores all the production shit.
I found the server.
In a wood box above the lazers
Vent had dust like 2in thick
Super high temperatures
Hadn't been touched for years.
>Only server with no backup
>20 years of invaluable data

The DOD forced those jackass to upgrade with a proper server room and off site backups.
